116 minutes

director: david fincher
starring: jesse eisenberg, andrew garfield, justin timberlake

finally being able to sit down and watch The Social Network after months of hearing how great it was, was something i was very excited to be doing today. and on a snowy tuesday in wisconsin, what else is there to do?

and honestly, The Social Network is flawless in every single category: acting, script, score, directing, cinematography, story, and atmosphere The Social Network definitely deserves a Best Picture nomination and i feel very strongly that it should win Best Picture this year. yes, i haven't see all of what we believe will be the nominated, but The Social Network was flawless, and unless i just happen to like another film more, this should be the winner in my opinion.

for people who constantly say, "i don't like / have / know what / care about / whatever... facebook" and are going to skip out on The Social Network because of its connection to facebook then that is your loss and choice of stupidity. if you don't want to watch it because it doesn't look interesting? okay, that's fine. i get that. but saying, "i hate facebook so i'm not gonna watch this" is nothing but stupid.

this is about a BUSINESS, not FACEBOOK as an entity. do you want to see how a business tears friends apart, know some of the dirty secrets behind a massive billion dollar company, and how it all began? i did, and that's why i originally wanted to see The Social Network. it's not a film with a bunch of people sitting around on facebook, that would be lame. The Social Network is definitely not.

jesse eisenberg does a phenomenal job in his biggest role to date (by far) as Mark Zuckerberg. as does Timberlake and Garfield in their respective roles. the scene stealer(s) though was Armie Hammer who plays the Winklevoss twins (i didn't know it was one actor! ) every scene he was in was fantastic and he had so many funny lines of dialogue and facial expression were classic.

if i had to choose the best aspect, i would be left with the following:

- directing
- score
- script

all three are easily 5/5's. the directing is probably Fincher's best to date. the score by Trent Reznor was / is so, so, so awesome and addicting (bought it as soon as it ended and listening to it ever since ) and the script. so fast paced, so witty, so smart and so cunning and @ss-holish. it's wonderful! and i was amazed at the amount of times i seriously during The Social Network. if you don't mind some people who come across as slimy, egotistical and a genuine smart @ss then you will definitely enjoy the dialogue of The Social Network.

as far as Fincher's work goes, i will have to think about it, but i believe as far as overall "best" films of his, this is either #1 or #2. if it is #2, it's behind Zodiac. the way he directs The Social Network is magical. and for a film that is very heavily dialogue driven, the 116 minutes fly by and i was hooked to the screen the entire damn time. i never got bored, the film never got slow and i never wished it would end. it could have been four hours and i would have sat, curious, wide eyed and in complete amazement and joy at this masterful creation.

cannot wait to dive into the commentaries and special features soon

PQ: 5/5 - very dark scenes with low lighting. i loved it. looks amazing
AQ: 5/5 - dialogue heavy, but some scenes with music are

Final Verdict: 5/5 - loved it!
I agree 100% this movie as a shocking GREAT!

Holy crap. I just saw it. I'm still kinda "shakey." I haven't been this affected by a movie in a while. The last 20 minutes is just orgasmic. Now THAT was a climax. CRapola. I can't even begin to "break it down." I just wanna keep feeling it. Whoa.......

I am very eager to see this because of the "foul play" element. Sounds fantastic. I love backstabbing in movies.

I cant find words to match Riffs, so I'll just describe it as Requiem for a Nightmare. Yes, it was that intense, and an even more disturbing journey. To my surprise, I was fightened more frequently and more deeply than during the best horror films. I had my knees to my chest and covered myself with my coat like a child protects himself in bed when he is afraid. I felt like I was in danger. Aronofsky yo-yos between scenes of intensity and scenes where a viewer can recover and breath. As the story advances, the (needed) restful gaps between the intense scenes become briefer and less frequent. All culminating to a point where I almost couldnt handle the constant barage, the uninterupted onslaught of insanity being shoveled onto my emotional well being. I felt fragile and damaged by the end. I cried, yet I felt a sense of freedom and release. If only to have made my escape.

Technically, I noticed dozens of small and subtle things effectively employed simply to keep me disturbed.

The score was unreal. Imagine wading ankle deep in a river swollen to capacity by rains and melting snow. It's raging and violent. It's a living thing, a beast. Now wade in to your knees. Take a few more steps...and it takes you. It owns you. It engulfs you and makes you a part of it. You can paddle and kick all you want, but its futile. You are at the mercy of its rage, and it WILL abuse you. It will drag you and heave like a ragdoll. It will bring you to near death, and then allow you another moment of hope. Yes, that is what the score did to me. It is Ballet afterall.

Portman? During the final 15 minutes something happened. Something foriegn occupied Portmans body. Not the character, but Portman herself. When the character "Let go", Portman simultaneously became something beyond an actress in a role. She went beyond an actress portraying and actress. She became something so haunting that I cant even put my finger on it. She wasnt Natalie any longer.

I missed my off-ramp on the drive home. At the next off-ramp I turned the wrong way. I felt disoriented. I still do.

I shed a few more tears when I got home too. It makes me so happy that there are still people like Aronofsky who CARE so much about their final product. You just cant make a film like this without being monumentally passionate, and it shows.

5/5
What an awesome elegantly-written review.
