The first deal on the set to go under even the BN pricing mistake on eBay. A steal.

Not quite, but still damn good. I think this one got a 2K scan, but don't remember off the top of my head. At the end of the day it looks fantastic.

US resident here, you are my new best friend. Thank you so much I've been waiting for this set (the last of the criterion chambara films they have on bluray that I don't own)when I had a spare $100 on a criterion sale to blow, but no more!!!!!!

Any difference in packaging, numbering or features from the Region A release??

I believe only difference is the region and the sticker that comes with the boxset has the UK rating on it.

It can be considered 2kish at the best, because it is from a 2k transfer or less.

The Criterions from a 4K Transfer are all I really want to purchase, but sometimes you have to make sacrifices.

These on this list look 4kish

Can the 820 Top Menu trick work for Region B Criterion? I have firmware but would rather just do top menu. If anyone knows or can test LMK, thank you!

A lot of the newer 2K scans are on par with 4K scans on blu-ray, especially for many Arrow and Criterion transfers. Also typical for Criterion are often films which are scanned at 4K, but finished at 2K. The argument makes more sense in UHDs, where 2K upscales stick out like a sore thumb even for films shot on 35mm finished at 2K (La La Land is a good example). But on blu-ray, a new 2K scan shouldn't look any worse than a new 4K scan.

Also a lot depends on the source. On blu-ray 2K Criterion transfers like Pickpocket, Night of the Hunter, Jules et Jim, Wild Strawberries and several others blow 4K Criterion transfers like Don't Look Back and Following out of the water. This is because the former are 35mm while the latter are 16mm. If these were all UHDs, I'm sure the 4K transfers would edge out slightly because they'd have lower artefacts and tighter visible grain in UHD in comparison to what would be 2K upscales. But in terms of detail and definition such 2K upscales would still overall beat out native 4K transfers of films shot on 16mm, digital or faster stock. Also Darkest Hour (which had a 4K DI) looks like over processed video in comparison to say I am Legend (had a 2K DI) in UHD just because the latter was 35mm while the former was Alexa.

The key thing is, when buying UHDs, I find it completely normal if one would buy only those from a 4K transfer (and a film or high end digital source). But on blu-ray, though a 4K transfer is always preferable, a new 2K scan isn't all that worse off...

Did you mean Don’t Look Back? Pretty sure Don’t Look Now was shot on 35mm

Even I, who wonder how many films in the Zatoichi set I'll actually enjoy without feeling an ennui of repetitiveness, have ordered it because at less than 22 quid, even 3-4 decent ones will be bang for the buck (or in this case should it be hack for the buck? )

My copy of Lone Wolf and Cub, from the Barnes and Noble sale, finally shipped! The Samurai Jack fanboy in me is giddy with anticipation.

The Last Metro

Is it just me , or the CC edition looks a lot warmer than the Studio Canal edition? Which one is more accurate?

This happens with a fair number of Euro releases (compare Criterion/SC versions for the Melville films and Bunuel's Belle de Jour). I wonder if it may have to do with how the prints released in Europe and the US may have differed.

What I am trying to distinguish is whether color temperature is too cold on the Euro edition or too warm on the US one

If you are Region Free (or B) and have Amazon Prime (UK,) here is a great deal for the Zatoichi set:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Zatoichi-The-Blind-Swordsman-Blu-ray/dp/B07GNRVVSL?SubscriptionId=AKIAIY4YSQJMFDJATNBA&tag =bluraycom-21&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creative ASIN=B07GNRVVSL&m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE

I was able to purchase this for a grand total of $28.26.

Sign up for Prime on a trial basis and then cancel in a month.

This deal is roughly $1.13 per film!

To misquote a famous person -- what's prime got to do with it? It's not a Prime Only deal
