Straight Story's time at Disney is coming up, I believe. From what I have read, like Lost Highway, it is only a matter of time before the rights revert back to MK2.

Quite frankly, I'll accept any Lynch they give us (except maybe Inland Empire & Dune).

That would be incredible if we got a box set of the remaining 4. Or even a box set of all of his films. I’d certainly buy it instantly even though I already own the ones currently on blu-ray.

I've been under the impression Disney wholly owns the rights to Straight Story though? It's a different case than FWWM and Lost Highway, which were both CIBY properties whose rights shifted to MK2, with home video distribution falling out in the US with both NewLine and Universal respectively.

IIRC Straight Story was never owned by MK2 so there would be nothing to "revert back to" in the first place. It's a weird nut to crack because CIBY did have something to do with the production along with Canal+ but they didn't "own" it like Disney does. If that's the case it's up to Disney to put it out themselves or license it out and we know about them and their iron grip of everything related to them in the North American market.

Now that Peter Jackson has announced to restore his earlier films on blu-ray, who's up for Criterion to team up with Wingnut films?

A box set has been rumoured for ages featuring all the Showa era movies plus Rodan and War of the Gargantuas. Someone posted here recently (sorry can't find the post now) that they had spoken with Criterion and they said work had yet to begin. With Warner releasing the new Godzilla movie next year I was hoping for a release around that time.

No idea how much restoration work is needed on the classic Godzilla movies (haven't watched any of the Japanese Blu's because of lack of sub titles) so I can't tell if they have enough time to prepare a box set to cash in on the new American movies release.

I'd love a fully restored Dune (with the rubbish tv version thrown in) and a bunch of new extras. I have the 2 disc German Blu but would love some contemporary features looking back on it.

[Show spoiler]
Criterion seems to have a close relationship with Lynch, who has distanced himself from Dune and stated he regretted directing it. So, not sure it would be a prime candidate for a release.

Probably is unlikely, but I'd also like to think Criterion may consider it as one of those literary-adaptation type movies. Same reasons as to why Lord of the Flies made it in the collection, warts and all.

Frankly, I think the collection needs more sci-fi anyway. What do we have--Godzilla, World on a Wire, Robinson Crusoe on Mars, Things to Come, Island of Lost Souls, Seconds, aaaaand...?

I know Lynch isn't especially proud of it; it just has such history to it with it's source material; troubled production, various edits and such that it seems to be crying out for an extras laden disc that can give it some context. I personally really enjoy it and always have since first seeing it as a teenager so will admit to some bias!

Watched The Magnificent Ambersons last night. I haven’t seen this in probably 20 years and pretty much remembered nothing about it so it was like seeing it for the first time. I love Welles’ work. I think he is one of the best ever. Having said that, Ambersons was boring as hell. It felt twice as long as it’s runtime. Great camerawork and lighting and a wonderful score, but I couldn’t give a crap about any of the characters or their story.

I watched it for the first time a few weeks back and, yes, I felt the same way. I won't be watching it again. Glad I didn't buy it.

This is exactly why I don't blind buy Criterion releases anymore. I don't blind buy any releases for that matter. I have far too many titles in my collection that I'll probably never watch again. I can understand blind buying something if you don't have easy access. But my public library carries almost every Criterion release. And there is never a waiting list. So I can try these titles out without buying them.

With that said, I'm not being critical of anyone who likes this film. It's art. Tastes differ. Watch what you like and like what you watch.

Big fan of the genre, so the more the merrier.

And let’s not forget...Solaris.

Edit: beaten to it.

I hear you. I’ve seen it a couple of times and quite enjoyed it. Maybe he could be persuaded if he was given final edit rights, which he didn’t have for the theatrical release.

Excellent calls. How could I forget--we also have Brazil, Fantastic Planet, La Jetee, Repo Man, and The Blob. Arguably, Dr. Strangelove and Eraserhead as well.

Just remembered Equinox has a nice DVD release. And....ahem...Armageddon...

Still waiting for Wim Wenders' Until the End of the World to drop. Any day now.
