I'm still looking at the clues to see if anymore Warner stuff comes to mind.

Thanks for those 4 tentative titles though guys, and if you come up with any other hidden Warner titles, please post them.

Does Criterion still have the rights to La Strada?

It's been speculated since I got into Criterion in like 2010.
Every clue with a clock in it causes someone to think it’s After Hours.

Which is stupid because they're all clues for The Big Clock.

Duh.

I’m watching His Girl Friday a second time in an attempt to narrow down my next Flash sale order. Such a brilliant film, in both its conception and execution. It’s the quintessence of the screwball comedy. I’m laughing so hard at times I have to rewind, and the poor subtitles are struggling to keep up with the dialogue. That’s nearly as amusing as the movie itself. The lines flash so fast there’s no chance to read them.

Rosalind Russell and Cary Grant absolutely kill it, and my admiration of Howard Hawks continues to grow. This is the first movie I’m putting in my bin.

I've never seen this before, but your description has me interested. I jumped on Amazon to drop it in my cart when I discovered that I can watch this through Prime for free. Obviously, the quality won't be as good as a Criterion BD, but it will give me a chance to check it out.

Love Hawks and His Girl Friday, but while the 1st half is unabated comedic brilliance, the tonal shift with the wrongly incarcerated/suicidal angle stuff leaves such an acrid taste that it brings the whole thing down IMO.

I'd say that Hawks did indeed craft the quintessential screwball comedy, but he did it with Bringing Up Baby IMO.

Make sure it has good audio. This film is basically unwatchable without it. My old public domain DVD had horribly muffled sound, making it difficult to hear the dialogue much of the time.

Audio is the least of my concerns. I'm deaf, so my biggest concern is always the quality of the subtitles.

I can't imagine watching this movie without sound. There's so much fast dialogue, and back and forth quips. I hope you can still find it enjoyable

I just watched Panique, really an excellent film. My first Julien Duvivier film. I hope Criterion releases more of his films.

Have you watched The Front Page? The incarcerated/suicide subplot becomes the, er, jumping off point for a lot of wise-cracking gallows humor. Hawks’s version is almost sentimental in comparison.

I won’t argue with you about Bringing Up Baby.

It's okay guys, I wasn't offended.

Although I am deaf, and rely heavily on subtitles, I have an Auditory Brainstem Implant (similar to a Cochlear Implant) which provides me with some hearing sensation. So it's not like I'm watching a silent film. But with the fast dialogue, and relying on the subtitles, I'll probably need to rewind some scenes to catch everything.

Heard it through the grapevine, Criterion also licensed some Studio Canal films. We know some of the ex-critierion titles are now with Kino, I wonder which ones ended up with Criterion.

Finally added 12 Angry Men and On the Waterfront to my Criterion collection. Both quite amazing on all fronts. Especially liked the aspect ratio selection for Waterfront.

Oh man I just finished The Thin Red Line; I had recorded it from HBO and finally had the chance to watch it. What a film! I honestly can’t think of another war film that has given me such a reaction, besides a handful of others, two of which are in the Criterion Collection: Wooden Crosses and Paths of Glory. And what a cast too. Each actor, even though it doesn’t revolve solely on one individual, delivers an amazing performance. The interactions between Nick Nolte, Elias Koteas, and John Cusack were some of my favorite scenes—two looking out for the well-being of their squad, the other seeking glory in old age. Truly a phenomenal film.

What aspect ratio did you watch it in? I've only watched it in the ratio that's on the first disc I think, maybe 1:66.1? Just curious if there's a compelling argument for the other ARs (maybe I should watch the extras in this set )

In other news, my posters got delivered from Criterion today! Three days after ordering, now that's service. And they came in thick tubes, inside a box, the posters handled with care and wrapped in paper (Shout Factory could take some lessons here). Can't wait to hang them.
