The variety in movies is incredible. We are actually getting Vinegar Syndrome's Tammy And The T-Rex on 4K disc!

When oddities like this appear, and when an indie label like Vinegar Syndrome starts to offer 4K titles on disc, that is a very promising sign for the 4K disc format. Combined with Sony's recent decision to include a 4K disc drive on the upcoming Playstation 5, these announcements encourage my optimism even more.

4K disc will likely never be mainstream, either, but it doesn't have to be anymore than laserdisc was all those years before it. It just needs enough people who value the best in quality, along with actual ownership, to support it.

In other personal good news, Amazon gave me a 10% discount in the form of a gift card on the price of my new TV because the price of it dropped within a month of my buying it.

I had to talk to 4 people, including 2 managers, to get it done, but my persistence paid off. Amazon initially wanted me to return my 85" TV, at their expense, and then buy it again at the lower price. I had to talk to all of these people to convince them of how expensive that would be for them, inconvenient for me, and all around a nonsensical thing to do. Returning a perfectly good jumbo TV was an absurd idea and it would have cost them far more had I done it the way that they first suggested and I would have been without this TV for another 2 weeks while waiting for them to send another one.

All said and done, Amazon would have paid to ship this TV three times had I accepted their initial offer. They so rigidly want to adhere to their usual policy, that they do not think things through some times. I am happy with the outcome, so the effort spent explaining the matter was worth it in the end.

Two years after Steedeel predicted that major companies would adopt variable speed playback, here we are. It’s a test at moment but I have zero doubts it will be popular. They did similar with YouTube and it proved extremely popular and became a major feature.

The bastardisation of our beloved art form continues.

Don’t worry though, attention spans are just fine!

The only reason I've used variable playback speed on Youtube was to get silly effects. Pointless feature otherwise.

For you and I? Yes. Not for attention challenged millennials and gen Z folk. It’s all about commenting on social media and being first to see a show or talk about the latest stuff. I saw this coming but was crucified a few years back for my opinions. Looks like it’s about to go big.

It's been an option on Youtube for years. I don't use it and I'm technically a millennial being born in 92. Although I barely use social media either.
I doubt age makes much difference. You'll always have some people who feel they don't have the time to properly enjoy watching a film/tv show or whatever else because their trying to do too much in a short space of time.

Yep, and this development only makes things worse. It’s been a common feature on podcasts for years also and apparently, more people listen at 1.5 than they do on normal. I found that surprising and disturbing. I suspect the same will happen here.

Playback at 1.5 makes people sound like their talking whilst on helium. How anyone can watch content like that I'll never know.

When I was gaming more I used to post on a Playstation forum and the things you heard there were just ridiculous sometimes.
People would play a game and be done with the story but still need a higher level for a certain trophy.
What they would do was do the same thing over and over until they got to that level...while watching Netflix. They even gave it a name "grinding with Netflix".
Afterwards they would say they didn't really like the show. Yeah well duh, they probably didn't even see half of it.
But opinions like that don't matter to me. They have no value. The internet and social media has given everyone a voice and we're confronted with the biggest crap nowadays. We're just gonna have to live with it.

Living with it isn’t a problem. Being forced into it is where the problem lies.

1.5X speed has been around a lot longer than Netflix, podcasts, and YouTube. People have had easy access to it for twenty years now through...wait for it...disc players!

I use it all the time...for redundant, repetitious, not nearly as important as people think they are special features. It has saved me plenty of time - no need to spend 30 minutes listening to Ingmar Bergman being asked the same questions about the projector he got for Christmas in 1927 for the hundredth time when I can get it done in 19 minutes.

Yeah, but it’s not pitch corrected on disc. Also, in many cases, the dialogue isn’t included in 1.5 playback at all.

I would also ask, why watch in the first place if it doesn’t entertain you?

Because there are good extras and there could be something interesting buried anywhere. They are just few and far between. You can get through it as quickly or slowly as you choose.

I don’t watch every extra, by the way. I almost never listen to commentaries. Any information they contain could be communicated more efficiently and effectively through other means (and frequently are...the rest is trivia most people will forget about just one month later.)

You think everything new or different is going to be so popular that it destroys everything else. And it never happens; no one is ever "forced" to do anything that they do not want to do. All of our options remain.

The only thing here I ever worry about is you. Attention spans are fine; I only wish that you were. I will leave it at that as this thread has just been reopened, for barely two days, and here we have yet another of your movie killer predictions. The list of your imaginary threats grows while movies remain entirely unaffected.

The point is, this could well be the future of media. I said it three years back and here we have Netflix possibly introducing it. I remain unconvinced by your (and others) claims that there isn’t a problem with attention spans. I say there is.

Yes, it was and for about one day (late on the 23rd and most of the 24th). I exchanged PMs about it with another member who first alerted me to it.

The future can be many things, but the futures you describe are all bleak; every last one of them. Peddle your fears to someone else, I'm not buying into any of them.

You can believe and say anything that you choose...and you certainly do. Thankfully, facts and the reality in which we live are independent of your opinions.

I will take science and market data over your ceaseless worries and contrived conjecture every. single. time.

The thing is, I said Netflix would adopt this. Where Netflix goes, others follow. Are you now saying you dismiss my posts even if they prove to be true? There is a word for that.
