Well Wrath of Khan looks quite good. There are plenty of soft shots etc, but it's all due to the source and not the transfer. Quite a few of the visual effects shots look very good. Some show their age more than others but all in all they benefit from the extra resolution. I've just watched Voyage Home. Search for Spock and Voyage Home both were worth the upgrade in sound, but I think anything above a 42" display or so and you will see the DNR at work. Still, I bought the 1-10 box set from Amazon which comes in a really nice box with all ten movies and the 2 bonus discs from the separate collections for $122. At $10 a disc it was worth the upgrade.

My understanding was that 1 has a good transfer with some contrast (ie too high) issues, 2 is great, 3, 4 and 6 suffer from DNR and 5 has more readily apparent contrast issues.

So far up to four the general consensus seems pretty accurate. 1 has had its contrast boosted. I don't think it affects the film as a whole, but it has occurred. 2 is the best of the bunch. 3 and four are similar in that they've just been hit with the DNR preset - presentable but not really acceptable in the scheme of things. 6 is apparently just as bad or worse and I'll give you my opinion on that when I watch it (most likely tomorrow). If you had to buy one I'd say by Khan.

As for top notch sci-fi of late, I'd recommend checking out Sunshine and Moon. They are not in the Star Trek sci-fi style, but they are both great films.

Aww, I was hoping you wouldn't say that. I don't mind that one, but I much prefer #4 and #6 as movies. I'll give it some thought, but I just don't think it warrants the expense. You're going to keep going though, right? I'd be interested to hear your opinion of #9 and #10.

I've seen both Sunshine and Moon, but neither really did anything for me.

Yep, I'll be going through the rest. Just got done with 4. It was an upgrade, but more in audio. The picture did benefit from the additional bitrate meaning transfer anomalies were minimised but as I mentioned before the DNR was fairly heavy. Truthfully I would stay with the DVD unless you are super keen. Then again, you can get the BD of Voyage Home from Amazon UK for under $20.

I'll let you know about Insurrection and Nemesis. Again, I've heard that Insurrection is average due to DNR but Nemesis is quite good although a little soft (again due to filming though).

This week is going to hurt! Threw down some more dollars for Forrest Gump, Event Horizon, The Incredible Hulk, Snatch and Pandorum from Amazon UK. Total $75 for the lot so a reasonable deal. I have wanted to check Pandorum out for a long time and seeing as I missed it in theatres. Being that a release here is not on the cards the price drop was a good time to buy. Missed Hulk in theatres also so this one's a blind buy too. I always enjoy Edward Norton and I've been a fan of the Hulk for a long time, just never saw this one. Plus, Liv Tyler in HD Event Horizon is a slightly guilty pleasure, but it's a favourite of mine. Forrest Gump will be a good upgrade and Snatch is a must have - big Guy Ritchie fan and at 7GBP before VAT it's a steal (or a snatch ).

Watched: Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Probably my equal least favourite Trek film even though it has it's moments. For the most part the transfer actually looked quite reasonable. Contrast had been pumped up, but having said that most scenes on the DVD were overly bright and washed out. They may have gone a litte too far the other way, but I prefer this look over the DVD. Having said that, with the contrast pumped up the scenes in the finale on the planet with the being in the light really are ultra white now and make the detail in the being's features a lot harder to make out.

So far I would rank the transfers the following way:

1. Wrath of Khan
=2. The Motion Picture/The Final Frontier (TMP marked down due to blemishes, TFF due to contrast and some DNR)
=3. The Search for Spock and The Voyage Home (similar transfers with quite a bit of DNR).

Again sound was the winner. There were definitely nuances I had never heard fully before like the song Uhura sings actually being in the background in the bar scene at the start of the film.

Enjoy, The Incredible Hulk is one of my top 5 Blu-Rays, without a doubt. IMO, more than makes up for the travesty that was the first Hulk.

Edit: Just got home from seeing Iron Man 2 on the big screen for the second time. Can't wait to watch this one on my setup at home, will be a day one purchase without a doubt.

If only The Warehouse shipped O/S though. Still, $14AU on average per title for that order is pretty good especially considering all of those titles (with the exception of Pandorum which hasn't been released) are in the $20 to $40 price range here in Australia.

Bought I Sell the Dead for $13 delivered from 101cd.com. Been wanting to check this one out for a while. Ron Perlman is the man. Graveyard comedy, even when it's bad it's going to be good. Now if only they could release Outpost - that's another low budgeter that would be awesome on Blu-ray.

Bought: X-Men The Last Stand 2 Disc

Yet to pick up the first two. I might be in the minority but I rather enjoy this one, but then again I also prefer Ang Lee's Hulk to the 2008 version.

Bought: Elizabeth, don't know what the fuss about the transfer is, it is identical to the hddvd which got solid ratings for PQ.

Yep, she maid that film watchable. Especially when she was in her tight read costume (the snake guy was quite cool as well). Alas the movie failed on the whole for me, but sieng Garner is always nice.

Watched Star Trek The Undiscovered Country and Generations. TUC is as reported the most heavily affected by DNR. Generations had some DNR, but it was slight and on the whole looked reasonably good.

I should pipe in and say I ordered knowing steelbook from them and after two weeks of them saying that they had sent it, then that it was still at the warehouse to the next excuse I cancelled my order. The time before that I order a trillogy set and only got the third film contacted them about it and they sent out the third film again afterwhich they more or less called me a liar and that I had recieved what I was owed. I shall never use them again.
