The Time Machine
[Show spoiler]
  • 2002 | PG-13 | 96 Minutes

  • Director: Simon Wells

  • Starring: Guy Pearce

  • Sci-Fi | Adventure | Action

  • First Time Viewing

Pearce plays a scientist from at the end of the 19th century who experiences the loss of someone he loves early in the film and then devotes himself for several years to creating a time machine to be able to go back and undo what was done. On his trips through time he is inadvertently transported 800,000 years into the future where humans are now evolved into two distinct races: the ones like us and the ones who are "monsters" that live underground and hunt the "regular" people for food.

The movie is mildly entertaining but by no means much more than "okay".

There's some definite problems with the time travel stuff (there's no way
[Show spoiler]those carvings would be that well preserved...or preserved at all...
after 800,000 years) but how many time travel movies don't?

The movie is quite short and the story is pretty bland once he gets to the future
[Show spoiler]"hey people...oh no they took the girl...I'm going to get her back...hey is that Scar?!...I'm staying."
It would have been nice if the storyline of the film was more inspired and successfully made me care about Pearce's character or the few other ones and what happens to them. But it didn't.

Pearce is good in his role with what he has to work with and Jeremy Irons is always a good "go to" guy for a character who needs an awesomely evil voice.

I also liked Orlando Jones because he was quite funny a few times.

If its on TV and your interested, check it out, it may keep you entertained for a little over an hour and a half like it did for me. But don't expect much more beyond that.

Rating - 3/5
Accurate (I owe the Squidpuppet/Maetherion Conglomerate $0.50 now)

Have you seen the original 50s version? If I remember right, that one was closer to the original HG Welles book (and I think it's the better movie too).

Batman and Robin.”

Yes, I watched it.

This is easily the worst Batman film of the 90s franchise, and most folks would probably deem it one of the worst films ever. The campiness and wackiness that dominated “Batman Forever” works in overdrive in this film, and can be very cringe-worthy for most viewers.

For me…it’s never been that bad. If anything, I feel the action and special effects are the biggest and most ambitious in this film. Maybe not outstanding considering the cheap production value and the unbelievably over-the-top stuntwork. There is still a huge helping of silly dialogue (especially with all the one-liners from Ahnold). But for whatever reason (probably the fast pacing), I do find it entertaining.

As far as the story goes…well, now there’s like three villains, three good guys, some crazy plot involving satellites and plants, and something about Alfred having cancer. Bane is in the mix too, but the “Knightfall” storyline never comes up (which has always been a severe disappointment to me). It kinda does go all over the place, hopping from one action scene to the next with some drama thrown in for good measure. Yeah, nothing to really scream about.

As a film, it is indeed poor. Well, not necessarily with the cameramanship; I feel it is just as solid as it was in “Batman Forever” (some shots are the exact same too!). Acting is so hammy all around that it’s rather embarrassing; George Clooney as Batman is about as effective as Roger Moore playing James Bond. Arnold Schwartzenegger brings some decent macho muscle to the franchise, but his constant quips totally deplete his presence. I generally like Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy, but she is very over-the-top. Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl is average at best. That just leaves the guy playing Alfred as the sole remaining bright star in this cast, a true testament to just how bad everybody else’s performance is (bested by a butler, come on Batman! ). Writing is about as silly as it was in the last movie. Production value is even more embarrassing though; the lighting schemes remain unique and most sets, props, and costumes are nicely detailed. But, the vast majority of it is fake. They used plastic and cellophane for ice for Pete’s sake! Not to mention even more gangs sporting glow-in-the-dark paint and glowsticks as weapons (in what back alley do you ever see punks like this?!), and a myriad of other absurdities (like museum turned into a ice-skating rink). WTF?!! And lastly, the music is…okay.

3/5 (entertainment: 4.5/5, story: 2.5/5, film: 1.5/5)

Recommendation: Nah.

Even if it is the worst movie ever, it is a nice Blu-Ray. It looks about as sharp, clean, and detailed as “Batman Forever,” with perhaps slightly better color and contrast. Sound quality is surprisingly top-notch; I can tell it’s much more dynamic and active than all the previous movies.

PQ: 4/5, AQ: 4.5/5

+1!

Batman Returns was always my favorite Batman movie growing up. I fully agree with your reviews. Though Batman Begins is now my favorite of the bunch considering it's in my top ten.

And I would add .5 to your Batman Forever score for Jim Carrey alone.

Nope, I haven't seen it. All I know about the original is what was in the Big Bang Theory episode that centered around it

I seem to remember being interested in this one when it first came out, but I never saw it until tonight.

Maguire plays a Marine Captain (which I just couldn't buy him as a Marine Captain. Lieutenant? Yep. But not a Captain) that goes off to Afghanistan shortly after his younger brother is released from prison. While he's there he and his men crash and are presumed dead. The family grieves and tries to move on after losing him; the only thing is....
[Show spoiler]he isn't dead
.

I also enjoyed this one more than I thought I would. It has some hilarious moments early on, some sad moments throughout, disturbing moments and some very high tension moments. A little bit of everything in a movie that isn't even two hours long. And just about all of it works very well.

My only complaints really was when
[Show spoiler]they go to meet him at the plane. It was a little anticlimactic; they hugged him and acted like he was just coming back from vacation or something. That should have been a very emotional scene, for them at least if not him.
That and I would have liked to see a little more time between Maguire
[Show spoiler]and his fellow Marine that made us feel it even more when he kills him.

Everything else though, I highly enjoyed.

The scene near the end where
[Show spoiler]Maguire loses it until when Jake G is walking down the street after was incredibly I had no idea what was going to happen. Is he going to kill Tommy? Hurt/kill Grace? Maybe even hurt one of the girls? Kill himself?! (which I didn't think of until he put the gun to his head).
That was "great" stuff.

The acting from the main three was very good.

From when Maguire
[Show spoiler]had to kill his man until the end of the movie where he goes berserk
he was great. When it first started I just couldn't shake the thought of, "Hey look, it's Spider-Man." But his
[Show spoiler]post-war stuff took care of that very quickly. He was freaking nuts

It's always nice to see Natalie Portman in a non-Star Wars movie because it reminds me that she can speak like a real person

And Jake G always seems like the cool guy to me, even when he was the lame guy in Zodiac

If you haven't seen this film, I would definitely recommend watching it. Like I said it has a moments all across the spectrum of emotion in such a short film.

I would put it at #4 on my list for 2009 behind Star Trek, Taken and The Blind Side.

Rating - 4.75/5
I liked it too. Haven't seen my blu-ray copy yet though (got it for $8). I initially thought I had the whole movie figured out from the trailer, but it offered much more than that. Great performances all around too.

These days, Disney's name without Pixar doesn't raise my expectations, but I was certainly wrong in this case.

The original ought to be a must-see. The SFX there are still smashing.

I did like the remake for one or two things (so much CGI... ), but it's nothing like the original story.

Right on! It's been the same with me; "Returns" was my fave, until "Begins" and "TDK" came along.

I think we were all wrong about Tangled. It was the damn previews fault. The dude and the horse were hilarious. I'm not sure if Squid "borrows" a niece to go to those movies or something, but i took my 7 year old daughter. It was good a good time for both of us.

Did you know that they had worked on Tangled for a couple years and Lasseter came in and told them to start over FROM SCRATCH? New everything, top to bottom. Thats why the mystery budget was so high. Now it has Pixars signature written all over it, and for the better IMO.

Yeah, shes no old school girly princess. Shes an action heroine.

How did you like the song when they go to the

That song was pretty hilarious. I kinda wished i'd been able to see it in 3-D, but at the time i thought it would be silly and unnecessary. I bet it looks lush on blizray.

Oh yes indeed.

Remember how Marley and Me was mismarketed as a comedy and people were upset at the surprise? I was unaware of this when I had this experience...

I was leaving the theater (alone) and I spotted a little boy about seven or eight years old sitting all alone on a bench in the lobby. He looked too young to be all alone and his face was wrought with despair. I was worried for him so I went over and knelt down in front of him (mindful not to sit next to him or touch him) and asked if he was OK. He said "NO!" I asked him what was wrong. He said "I just saw marley and me". I asked if he liked it. He said My Mom and Dad took me to see it (obviously not knowing the story) to make me feel better because my dog died last week!" and he began to wail with true pain and sorrow. He was just in so much grief. I wanted to scoop him up and console him and help find his parents. But, I didnt. I backed off. Everyone in the crowded lobby was looking our way. The light bulb went off in my head. Great, an old man is making that little boy cry.

Hey Mr., is that your kid?

No.... I was just...

"Hey somebody, call the cops".

It just could have gone SO wrong. Society is so quick to point a finger and condemn. I cant blame them because a kids safety is the most important thing. Its just sad that an innocent gesture of kindness could have been miscontrued as an evil deed. I chose to play it safe for selfish reasons, but it made me sad that I "had" to make that choice.

To all those in Club Loop and for those who enjoyed Triangle:

Chris Smith, the director of Triangle, has a new film coming out in March. The film is called "Black Death" and stars Sean Bean. Not surprisingly, the film is about the bubonic plague. So far, the reviews of the film have been very very good, standing at 75% on RT with 20 reviews so far. Can't wait to see this film.
