I'm thrilled with the release of the Bergman Faith Trilogy too. I don't need all the films of the big box and I'm happy with my Bergman blu-rays that were previously released.

So I finally have a completely free weekend and Im going to try to tackle at least half of Berlin Alexanderplatz.

I was super excited bc I love every Fassbinder Ive seen so far including Eight Hours Dont Make A Day & World On A Wire. Then I read some reviews online and everyone says its a bore with drawn out shots and incoherent plot lines. Now Im not so excited but still interested in watching it.

What do they know. That's why I don't bother with reviews. Enjoy, but maybe slow down a bit, no need to binge (of course that's what works best for me ymmv). My next/last of those three is World On A Wire, whenever I get around to it. Kind of got the Fassbinder bug again, so time to tackle some of the too many I haven't made it to just yet.

A boxed set would be a dream, but this has to be the first of many film releases of Fred & Ginger's work together. I'll take whatever I can get.

I just sent an overjoyed Tweet to Criterion. And asked for Top Hat next. If you guys want more of their work together, make your voice heard on Twitter, in e-mails, and most importantly, with your wallet. As soon as that goes up, I'm pre-ordering it. I'll gladly pay full price for it.

Now, maybe I can start getting some of Fred & Ginger's movies off my DVR, and into my collection.

I respect that. People shouldn't be forced to plop down $80 on sale for an eight film boxed set if they want two of the eight, only. My suggestion would be to do the boxed set first, then release them individually. The super fans like me will create a bundle of immediate income for Criterion, which will help with the individual packaging costs.

Only, don't take years to do it. I bought the BBS Story set because I wanted The Last Picture Show and Easy Rider on blu, and knew that I'd enjoy enough of the other films to justify the cost. Not everybody is as crazy as I am. There are a lot of people clamoring for The Last Picture Show to get an individual release, nine years later. I, for one, want another boxed set for Peter Bogdanovich, and I'd sell a kidney to get it. It's absurd that Paper Moon has never been released on blu domestically; I had to import the Masters of Cinema release.

Hell, if Criterion issued the Fred & Ginger movies individually, then did a boxed set, I'd double dip. I have enough friends that would like to watch some of them, and I'd gladly loan out individual copies. But I'd be less inclined to give them a whole set, as they're very condition sensitive.

Apparently I'm the only one who found this synopsis kinda funny. What an unfortunate name.

Quote:
With his stunning debut feature, the risk-taking auteur Bruno Dumont immediately established his reputation as both a spiritual heir to Robert Bresson and an uncompromising iconoclast on the cutting edge of French cinema. Blending unflinching realism with moments of startling, light-filled beauty, La vie de Jésus finds unexpected philosophical richness in the quotidian, small-town existence of Freddy (nonprofessional David Douche in a revelatory, one-off performance), an aimless young man with epilepsy who, in his childlike simplicity, embodies both great tenderness and terrifying brutality. Leaving the film’s cryptic title tantalizingly open to interpretation, Dumont dares viewers to see the divine in a seemingly dead-end world.

Quick question regarding the Criterion Channel streaming platform that goes live next month. Does anyone have a good idea on if those streams will be of the restorations that Criterion provides for their discs? I'm thinking about signing up but don't want to do so if the streams aren't good quality.... Granted I know discs will always be better than streaming, but still would be nice if their streams were of the recent restorations they do.

I doubt you’d want the English dub anyway. I tried it on my old dvd, and it was pretty odd.

According to a poster on Criterionforum, went to a Q&A for Walker at The Egyptian last night with Alex Cox. He says Criterion told Cox they weren’t interested in upgrading it to Blu-Ray. So let’s start an email complaining chain! Get Walker on Blu-Ray!!!!!!

That's odd. You'd think Criterion would want to upgrade as much of their catalog as they could, especially if the director wants it to happen too.

I remember Kevin Smith was told that Chasing Amy didn't need any improvements so it stayed on DVD

Why does it seem that Criterion always puts a Bergman film out on blu! haha. Arent all of Bergman films out on criterion blu by now? Is there any director that has more of their films released on Criteriom blu than Bergman?

Criterion has the rights, and not everyone wants the complete Bergman set.

The Film Forum are having a series on trilogies from April 19 - May 16. There's so many I want to see from this list, my god.

March is shaping up to be my favorite month of adding films to my collection since I started buying blu-rays four years ago. I've probably had a month or two where I spent more, but it's about the quality of films and diversity, to me. I don't know if I'll ever top this run. In addition to my Criterion Flash sale and Hammer Horror 8-film Collection haul, I'm importing four blu-rays from Amazon UK.

Nosferatu (Eureka)
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (Eureka)
Dr. Mabuse: The Gambler (Eureka)
The Elephant Man (Studio Canal)

You're welcome, everyone. My order all but assures that David Lynch's masterpiece will be announced by Criterion a little under a month from now.

"There, there. Don't cry, John. I'm sure somebody in America will release your film on blu-ray.

If you could also buy a copy of The Trial to possibly move along that announcement!
