Default Broken Arrow (1950)

This has been sitting in my WiP folder for weeks. Finally figured out what I wanted to do with it. This is a U.S. style cover for the French Blu-ray release.

That first Broken Arrow cover is my favorite of the two.

Both of the 'Broken Arrow' covers look terrific, Robert. But I would have to agree with Brannigan, I personally like the first cover better.

Yeah, my wife picked that one also. That is the original poster art/DVD art on the front, with some modification to fit the BD dimensions. The second, which I prefer, is a combination of two different images, and was a helluva lot more work. Maybe that's why I like it more.

I guess I'm in the minority, I really like the second one best. It has no empty space.

Absolutely nothing wrong with having a different opinion (thank goodness because this world would get rather boring if everyone had the same opinion).

By the way, here is a cover that I did a while back for another member, and due to it recently being announced I figured now would be a great time to share it with everyone else:

If anyone would like a copy, send me a PM.

I'm looking for replacement custom covers for

Christine BD (Japan)

Haunted with Kate Beckensale (Japan)

I imported these BD's and wanted to replace the Japanese cover art with a more modern American cover.

My latest, almost finished – based on the VHS sleeve. I'm just looking for some nice images for the back. Would anyone be interested in a Blu-ray version?

Looking really good Keung! As for good pictures, the only thing I can suggest is do a search on google images and set the image size to 'large'. I have found quite a few images for my own covers that way. For some other movies, I can also suggest http://lobbycards.tumblr.com/list there are usually some very good scans of lobby cards there. Keep up the great work!

I like the first art better, not not the title placement. Too much white space on the left and top of the text, considering the rest of the cover is all image. Just looks unbalanced.

Thanks, buddy! I'm a member of moviestillsdb.com but they don't always have what I want.

Cineplex (http://www.cineplex.com) is good for rarely seen images, but they're no more than 1000px in height or width.

Default Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Granada Television Series (1984-1994)

The 12-disc U. S. release of Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Granada Television Series, remastered for Blu-ray with generally superb video and audio, is packaged in a rather dreadful digipak case. It uses 6 plastic “leaves”, each holding 2 discs in an overlapping configuration, enclosed in a flimsy cardboard slipcase. Before even watching the first episode, I started giving thought to a pair of custom covers for two 6-disc cases. Unlike the earlier Spanish Region-free release, the first 2 series (Adventures and Return) occupy 3 discs each rather than 2, so the 6-disc format in 2 volumes seemed like a natural division of the set.

Here are my covers using fonts and a color (for the wording in yellow) that very closely replicate those seen in the title cards of the opening credits of each episode (see spoiler-tagged background discussion for more on this subject). Combining these original title treatments with complete episode listings didn't leave room for much else on the backs. This gives the covers what some might call a utilitarian look; I see the look as functional and... elementary. These covers are sized for the 6-disc Vortex case with a 21.8mm spine. BTW, the digipak case has a width of 55mm, so even the 2 “fat” Vortex cases require less shelf space than the original packaging.

Available at EuphoricFX or via PM with e-mail address

BACKGROUND

[Show spoiler]In the process of trying to determine what fonts Granada used in the opening credits for this series, I stumbled across a Home Theater Forum post by William Weiss in which he discussed his efforts to do exactly what I was attempting—except that Mr. Weiss, Master Sleuth in the forensic science of font identification, had actually been successful in his efforts! The 2 fonts are Verve and Ruben, the latter used only for the words SHERLOCK HOLMES. As it turns out, though, the Ruben font is only an approximation of the customized typography used by Granada. In order to fix this discrepancy, the standard Ruben character set had to be customized by horizontally compressing the characters to make them relatively taller, and also removing a descending serif found on the letter H. I was able to independently do what Mr. Weiss had done, and we compared notes after the fact. As he and I both discovered, this was a challenging and interesting exercise in computer-age graphic arts.

The Verve font is also (mostly) used for the episode titles in the opening credits, and my covers use that font for the episode listings. Some of the episode titles near the end of the program’s run (as well as in some of the five feature-length specials) were displayed in other fonts. In the last series, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, the graphics staff at Granada inexplicably went off the rails, using a different (unidentified) font for the words “The Memoirs of”. I’ve chosen to ignore this anomaly and stick with Verve for a consistent look.

Perhaps surprisingly for a program that was broadcast over a 10-year period (1984-1994), there were only 41 episodes produced. Five of these were feature-length specials (about 105 minutes), and were interspersed during the program’s run (further details can be found on Wikipedia). Granada’s Blu-ray set presents these five films on the last two discs, labeling them as “The Feature Film Collection”, thereby at least implying that they were produced and presented after the run of the standard-length episodes (50-54 minutes). This was definitely not the case. My listing of episodes follows the broadcast order, which may be of interest to those who wish to view the series as it was originally presented.

Yeah, I typed all that out really quickly. It's since been fixed.

Working on the Blu-ray version right now.

Yeah, when I first saw it, I saw the typo, but for some reason, my brain wouldn't make it say, "hero". I kept thinking the rest of a phrase must be missing, so I found the original VHS and noticed it should be "hero". When I came back to your post to mention it, I saw it said "hero". I thought I was losing my mind!
