Sounds like everybody is in agreement then that a 7.1 setup consisting of 7 RC-10's would be fantastic for movie viewing? I'm really leaning towards this because I'd like to have the exact same speaker all the way around as I think this is the best sound you can get and the most seamless, especially for pans.
These RC-10's would be better than just getting the Onkyo ht-s9100thx HTIB wouldn't they? I thought of doing that since they would be matching speakers all around and since I already have a receiver I'd sell the receiver that came with it and keep the sub to have 2 subs. I would expect the RC-10's would blow away the Onkyo HTIB speakers? Last edited by STARSCREAM; 05-19-2010 at 03:42 AM. |

Given the C-series came out in 06 and replaced in 09 and the RCs came out in 07, so to see them update in 2011 (or sooner) would make total sense. |

I would be a bit hesitant matching them up as the sound characteristics might be a bit different (the XL C is from 2002). Typically people want the front sound state (if not all) to be timber matched or having the same sound all around. Of course some people don't mind different sound characteristics from the center versus the mains. Best solution would be to try it out if possible (bring your speakers over or ask for a trial day) try listening in phantom mode (no center) then switching to just the mains. I did this a lot back in the day and ended up just going without a center (The center for the RC series was too expensive ($600 and no deals versus the others where I found great deals) back when I was looking.). So for me, tryin another line in the Energy offerings just made it sound a little muddy when mix matching the center with the mains. Last edited by Monkey; 05-19-2010 at 04:15 PM. |

Vann's is trying to tell me NOT to use an RC-10 as a center but to get a real center channel like the RC-LCR. This doesn't sound right to me? Wouldn't it be better to have all 7 speakers match? Plus I have the room to have the center RC-10 upright.
EDIT: this is what they just told me: "Centers are uniquely designed to project an even sound from the middle, the only way it would be superior is if you ran the center channel signal to an amp and then ran 2 centers". "a single driver will not have enough range to fulfill the requirements of the center channel signal." EDIT: Posted this in the audio theory and discussion thread and had it answered. I will try to acquire 7 RC-10's. Looks like I'll have to buy 4 pairs though and just store or sell the extra one. Last edited by STARSCREAM; 05-19-2010 at 07:15 PM. |

*EDIT* Never mind, I just read it. ![]() I would have thought that a timbre-matched center channel speaker would be the way to go but the logic makes sense. At $350 a pair, that's a pretty good deal too! Let us know how it sounds. Last edited by Bluray_ne1; 05-19-2010 at 07:46 PM. |

And running 2 centers is a dumb idea for various reasons. |

No matter how well speakers in a series are timbre matched, they will never be a perfect match. The RC-10 and RC-LCR have slightly different sonic signatures. Center channels are a design compromise to allow horizontal placement above/below the tv/screen. But there are some advantages as well... The horizontal array allows for more drivers, usually providing increased sensitivity and better power handling. The biggest drawbacks to the horizontal array include the issues of off-axis lobing (the severity depending on the design), and it not being a perfect match to the L/R mains. |
