a great, great film. sad, funny, charming, quirky, honest and very, very real. Jim Carrey's best performance in a landslide. Winslet is also awesome, even though she's never been a favorite of mine, she is almost always stellar in her roles, and this is no different.

sits at #2 on my favorites list (if i were to make a list, which i may not do again for quite some time simply because it feels like work) that was made weeks / months ago, but of course is still high up there. one of my absolute favorites that includes awesome cameos from Mark Ruffalo, Kirsten Dunst, Tom Wilkinson, and Elijah Wood.

soundtrack / score is also magnificent

and this blu-ray looks and sounds outstanding!

5/5
How are the roles of Ruffalo, Dunst, Wilkinson and Wood cameos?

My Dog Skip

2000 PG 95 minutes

Cast: Frankie Muniz, Diane Lane, Luke Wilson, Kevin Bacon

Director: Jay Russell

I love this movie. Its overly sentimental, manipulative, cliche filled and I dont care.

Dog lovers and people who like family stories must see this.

Film 5/5
PQ 4.5/5 Damn good

Neither. Its for the fact that it hit with a WOLLOP like it intended to.

The final 5 mins are really

It's kinda like a rise and fall movie, just without the rise (though everyone gets high in it)

Slumdog Millionaire

2008 R 120 minutes.

Cast: Dev Patel, Freida Pinto, Anil Kapoor, Irrfan Khan, Madhur Mittal, Ankur Vikal, Saurabh Shukla, Mahesh Manjrekar, Sanchita Couhdary, Himanshu Tyagi

Director: Danny Boyle

Second viewing, first time on Blu-ray.

This is a great movie, individual components, and as a whole as well.

I truly cared about the kids right from the very first moment.

The nonlinear storytelling is extremley back-n-forth, yet perfectly constructed and coherent.

The cinematography is standout excellent. The foot chases through the ghetto shot from the childs height perspective are nuts. Tons of beatifully framed big shots. Hand held guerilla stuff that wasnt shakey.

Moody and effective lighting.

The acting is just great. Some of the youngest cast members are so natural, its like they are film veterans.

The score is energetic, fitting, moody, everpresent but ever appropriate.

Its a great package that really works for me.

However, I think Raging Bull is Scorsese's best DIRECTED film and De Niro's BEST performance.
i don't know what i would call the best of the 80's... haven't seen enough of them of course to really make a list, but Raging Bull would be up there on merits of the film (acting, directing and whatnot) but not overall enjoyment or overall complete film and how it effects me.

I'll have to see Taxi Driver again to see which one i like more as far as directing and acting, but i think i'll agree with De Niro here. at times i thought "what's so special about this?" but then it got real good, real fast. i think it's a much harder role to nail down than his role in Taxi Driver as well.

even though The Empire Strikes Back is my favorite Star Wars film (in a landslide), i don't think it would even be in my top 30 for the 80's. but again, i don't have a definitive list.

...yet...

haha very true. it's like a nonstop roller coaster but without any of the twists and fun turns. just a steady, frenetic downward spiral to a dirty, awful, lonely hell

I have always liked Slumdog Millionaire too. I know it's contrived, but it makes for a good story. The mix of drama, sadness and humor is just right. I cared about the characters from the start.

People really over look this one, they feel like it going to be something spectacular because of it's awards, though it's a very simple engrossing story about a really damn lucky guy. I need to revist this some time soon, it's been ages since I watched it.

Buried

2010 R 95 minutes

Cast: Ryan Reynolds... and a bunch of voices.

Director: Rodrigo Cortés

Very well done nailbiter. Filled with moments of "I would have done that differently", but only because I am not there and its easy for me to say that. A series of emotional highs and lows punctuated with heavy doses of frustration and the overwhelming feeling of futility.

I think I would have enjoyed this more if there had been a BRIEF and really abstract/confusing visual account of the abduction in the beginning of the film. It would need to feel disjointed, incoherent and chaotic in order to maintain the feel thet the film was going for, but I think it would have worked/helped.

Creepy lighting (of course). Creepy sound effects. Straining yet creative camerawork, that worked.

Reynolds was darn good, but not awesome IMO.

The score was a bit much during "intense" moments.

Overall I enjoyed it and glad I caught it for sure.

The ending delievered.

Film 3.75/5
PQ Couldnt tell. It was too dark.
AQ 4/5 Eerie effects were very well done, but it was occasionally difficult to hear the voices on the other end of the phone calls.

Exactly. It's far fetched, but possible. And that never stopped anyone from loving Forrest Gump and the like.
