Ya, there are plenty of crap calls for Best Picture. I still cannot believe The Hurt Locker won Best Picture this year. It was a decent movie but nowhere remotely close to the best film of the year. Not in my top 20.

Picked up For All Mankind, M, Paths of Glory and Seven Samurai for $60.46 OTD at the Brandon's B&N!

The manager was super cool with the $5 coupon(s) (Also, able to get 10%, too for being a member) and tried to help me find Thin Red Line at other B&N stores around Tampa, but no luck! Already have TRL ordered online, though!

I'd agree but that's just picking one badly overrated film over another. It really shouldn't have been either but I think the Academy went with The Hurt Locker by default to deny Avatar.

So, I'm not sure if anyone has checked with the ebay seller 91pilot recently, who is notorious for having cheap Criterion movies, but seems like his resources aren't as good as they once were.

http://shop.ebay.com/91pilot/m.html?...&_trksid=p3686

He's selling discs only now. Just found that interesting.

I'm not sure based on the nominees which one I would have said was best, based on which I loved most I probably would have said Up

The Hurt Locker
Avatar
The Blind Side
District 9
An Education
Inglourious Basterds
Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire
A Serious Man
Up
Up in the Air

Saying something is "quality" is completely subjective. For the record, I think Paris, Texas is great. lDlisturb3d thinks it is mostly trash. Listing the amount of awards its won or citing an "expert" is going to do nothing to change his opinion. It is not a "quality" film for him, and the fact that it won a Palm D'Or won't change that, sorry. Listening to "experts" and taking their word for what is good and what isn't with something as subjective as film is flat out stupid and lazy.
I thought Paris,Texas was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. I thought the acting was great, and the pace of the story was excellent.
Certainly, lDlisturb3d is entitled to his opinion, but why say most of the movie was "trash"? Did he not know how to explain his point of view without being so vague?

Sorry I'm so late, finally saw the newsletter hint today. If this is, in fact, Blow Out...I'm gonna go nuts. I'm a huge De Palma fan, and this film (along with Body Double) is one of my favorites. Great stuff.

Yeah, I would have voted for Inglourious Basterds myself... but I really enjoyed The Hurt Locker so didn't mind it winning. Keeping in mind I haven't seen all of those (though A Serious Man and Up in the Air are high on my to-see list), I'd rank them (of the nominations) something like: Inglourious, District 9, and The Hurt Locker as 1-2-3 of my picks. Though the gap between District and Hurt Locker is slim. Up was good, but didn't really have the re-play value I was expecting.

I highly doubt Disney would ever go for it, besides Disney does pretty well with their releases

Just watched Paths of Glory for the first time, and really enjoyed it.
Just going into it knowing it was a war film, it was quite different from what I expected, in a good way.

This is probably the best image from the movie, and should have won that facebook screen grab contest. (I wish I had a blu ray drive on my computer, instead I had to try and figure out my exposure settings to snap a picture of my television).

I must have wanted the ONLY criterion that is not available during the B&N sale (excluding OOP titles of course) Story of a Prostitute is not available from the B&N website and it is not available in any stores near me.....seriously....weak

What is your take: will Polanski's "Knife in the Water" be released on Blu-ray anytime soon?

Thanks in advance.

I most certainly agree with you...and BTW...you did a GREAT job on getting that shot. If you'd said nothing, most of us would have thought that this was a screen capture!

From criterionforum.org...

Over on Deluxe Digital London's 'Grading & Restoration' page there is a small box on the right-hand side labeled Recent Credits. Using your mouse to scroll over the images in the box, you'll see some recent restorations for Criterion.

A few notables...

- The Canterbury Tales
- The Scarlet Pimpernel
- Jungle Book
