no it does not make sense from a financial standpoint at all...yes I do see a lot of people buying the trilogy set instead of the standalone because of the small difference in price but it doesn't mean that what they are doing makes economic sense...lets say you already own both Batman Begins and Dark Knight Blu-ray's...now if you choose the Trilogy box set of DKR at $30 you are technically paying $30 for the 1 movie you do not currently own

the trilogy is a great deal only for those that do not currently own either of the first 2 movies
No, you're just wrong. You get all the movies and all the extra discs in one box + you get the book. For anyone who doesn't have both earlier movies, that's a steal. For anyone who has suffered any kind of disc damage (or wear) to the first two, it's a great deal. Besides, even if one doesn't want to sell the old ones on eBay, and doesn't care about collecting every version but just wants the movies, the first two flicks can be traded in at BB for an extra $10 discount - which means you pay $10 or $15 for the entire trilogy - a GREAT deal!

I said that it was a great deal for anyone that doesn't own either of the first 2 movies...definitely a steal...but for anyone who does it's not a steal or a deal...unless you consider the book some sort of amazing addition

selling previous versions on Ebay definitely makes it better but it's still a hassle...but the main point is that WB has already announced a super deluxe Collector's Edition coming in 2013...that's what makes the 1st box set pretty much worthless...it's a double dip expresso...unless you're one of the few who consider all the previous versions of LOTR, Avatar, Harry Potter etc totally not a cash grab and a worthwhile edition

WB is telling us (warning us) that a better version is coming in 2013...unless you're extremely impatient it makes sense to wait...why do you think the box set is so cheap for?

Suppose the '13 boxed set is $100, $200...makes this set look a lot more appealing. A very good deal for those that already own the first 2 movies, and a fantastic deal for those that don't.

Waiting for some "maybe better/maybe way more expensive" set is unappealing - and remember, a bird in the hand ... I don't care about some wacko figurine or whatever, and the odds against them including additional worthwhile Blu-ray content are slim. I would agree with you totally if this set was only three discs - but it includes ALL the bonus content (5 discs), and the booklet is nice 'cause I'm never gonna buy the full 304 page version.
Also, perhaps you overlooked my Best Buy trade-in comment (I agree, selling the Batman's on eBay would be a hassle and used prices are way down because the market is flooded) - that's a guaranteed $10 "credit", meaning a final value price of $10-$15 for the new movie the day it comes out. For collectors who only want the ultimate version, perhaps waiting is worth the gamble (although, at this price ...). But, for collectors who want sealed versions of everything, and for folks who just want the discs, I just can't see how that's not a great deal for anyone who doesn't plan on keeping the first two versions for the artwork alone (which I mentioned earlier). In fact, since it got lost in the flood, I'm going to repost my earlier linked post for anyone following this conversation and looking for more info:

DC Entertainment just posted a look at the new The Dark Knight Trilogy Limited-Edition Gift Set. They want $36, but it appears to be the same edition as is listed on Amazon for $30 with free shipping. You get all the discs and features that came with the original releases [1 disc for Batman Begins and 2 each for The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises (each as they were originally released)]. A comprehensive list of all the special features is available in a review posted by M. Pereira on Amazon. The set also includes a 64 page preview booklet of the 304 page hardcover book ($22), The Art and Making of The Dark Knight Trilogy.
It appears to be a great deal in that The Dark Knight Rises alone is currently priced at $25 - although, I'm sure that the stripped down artwork is designed to get folks to keep their original copies rather than sell them. Other than that, I see nothing missing. Let me know if you do.

I'm just getting the steelbook version and that is all. The limited edition is bulky for my taste and I already have the individual releases of the first two.

I'm not so sure about that...Nolan definitely filmed Bane's origin but then cut it from the final version...I think one of the early trailers even showed a quick snippet...so maybe it will be released as part of the 2013 set...I doubt the 2013 set will be a simple rehash of things already released...there has to be new content to make people want to purchase it

it will most likely be more expensive but I don't see it going past $75-$85...plus a lot of people who end up purchasing the trilogy box set in December will most likely end up purchasing the 2013 set...so in the end it's all about being willing to wait...having 3 copies of the same movie seems silly...even with the Best Buy trade in you're still going to end up spending more in total

Well held out buying any of the films on BD because I knew a trilogy set would be coming. When I saw the price, it was a no-brainer. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

The ultimate collector's edition will probably only be purchased by the hardcore (crazy) fans who buy every copy anyway. It's not for the general public. Look at the Harry Potter UE that Warner put out. It was 350 bucks (!) for the exact same discs that they had already released numerous times plus a few trinkets and 1 sad hour of new bonus features (for 8 movies!) in a neat but inconvenient package. If the Batman set is anything like that, I want nothing to do with it.

Most film collectors, fans, families, etc. would simply pick up the regular set or the individual titles (I got all 8 HP films for a total of $40). The trilogy set comes packed with features and includes nice packaging anyway, so nobody's missing out.

And for the record, LOTR gets cited a lot for multiple releases, but they only had two: Theatrical and Extended cuts. I imagine that most people only bought the latter.

What are the chances that the 2013 set is just the same BB, TDK and TDKR discs put in a box set with the Burton and whatshisname's films? This is Warner Bros we are talking about.

They won't include the old movies, but more than likely they will be the exact same transfers for BB, TDK, and Rises. We'll probably see about 2-3 hours of new content at most (I'm guessing the BB exclusive Reborn doc will be among that), and some physical items and it'll probably retail for around $70-90

Hmm...I would think that's unlikely, but I believe the Burton/Schumacher films are OOP, so who knows.

Steelbook for me too. I have the First 2 BB Steelbooks so this will complete my set.

that's my point...for anyone who owns Batman Begins and/or Dark Knight why not just purchase a standalone of DKR...wait to see what the 2013 set brings to the table...if it ends up being too hardcore like the Harry Potter $350 set then either keep your standalone copies or get the normal trilogy version at that time...it's not like you're going to be without any of the movies until then as you'll have the standalone Blu-ray's

plus the normal trilogy will probably be cheaper by that time...if WB had not announced a new set coming in 2013 then I could understand rushing to buy the 1st trilogy box set but just like like James Cameron did with Avatar when it first came out on Blu-ray (bare bones) or Michael Bay did with the first version of Dark of the Moon (bare bones) it is probably best to wait (although in Avatar and Dark of the Moon the cases are different because those were the only copies released at the time so people did not have another copy to fall back on until the re-release)

D'oh! I don't often channel Homer Simpson, but ... While I was out riding yesterday it occurred to me that Best Buy's trade-in program is for DVD's ONLY. Sure enough, the local store confirmed this when I called them. I also checked with Warner Brothers own DVD2Blu program, and they do accept Blu-ray discs as well as DVDs - so you could get $15 in trade-ins for the three discs in the first two Batmans ($5 per disc, you keep the cases/art/etc). However, they haven't upgraded their offerings in quite a while so you should check to see if they have anything you want.
Otherwise, eBay (or other such sites) is the way to go and it's not a pretty picture. Currently, a Like New Batman Begins is selling for $6.61 - meaning you'd net about $3-$3.50 after fees and postage (perhaps $8-10 for the steelbook-demand has dwindled). A Like New Dark Knight might get you $4 - and that's only if you already have packing supplies and a PayPal account (perhaps $8-10 for the steelbook-again, demand has dwindled).

I was in FYE today picking up Titanic, and I noticed a poster of future releases that had TDKR as, "Available on DVD and Blu-ray December 7."

Are we all missing something here, or did FYE just misprint their own poster?

This is most likely since the trailer and press release state that it's coming out December 4th.

Went ahead and pre-ordered the Cowl limited edition from amazon.com. I also found the Batpod edition of The Dark Knight on walmart.com so I ordered one.

Do anyone know if the best buy release with the documentary "Dark Knight Reborn" is on a bluray or DVD or god forbid download ?
