Wow, I have watched some great films in the last few weeks. I'm going to be ready to measure facets soon.

Thanks again for all the great recommendations, everyone.

My wife’s unpopular movie opinion:

X-Men Origins: Wolverine is the best solo Wolverine film

Now you need to watch Inception 14 and 1/3 more times before you can be validated to provide professional objectivity.

I don’t care for Chris Nolan films outside of TDK trilogy and The Prestige. Don’t think he’s THAT great of a director lol

I fully expected to greatly enjoy Inception and have tried to watch it on two attempts. Sadly, I just couldn't get get into it. I remember feeling like there was something rather trite about the plot but I can't recall exactly what it was. Oh, well

There's so many movies that bombed at the box office or were critically panned that later gained acclaim or a cult following. I wonder what movies from the last few years that have gone underappreciated will eventually find their way onto lists of bests and favorites?

Should this question not be in the Popular thread?

A lot of recent low budget horror films didn't do well at the box office, but very quickly found an audience/critical acclaim or gained cult status.

Suspiria (2018), Hereditary, Annihilation, Under The Skin and others.

Hereditary would be considered a hit. It made $44 million domestically and $80 million worldwide. It didn’t make crazy numbers but enough to be a hit.

You're right about the financial side, but I recall quite a lot of casual US moviegoers venting how bad or boring they found the film to be. It's RT audience score is in the 60s.

Perhaps people thought they were going in for a 'traditional' US horror film with jump scares every five minutes and what have you. Instead they got a slow paced, dark family drama that relied on foreboding atmosphere and building tension.

I don't mind either. It's no sillier than using frogs to breed mutant dinosaurs in the late 80s lol.

Super 8 is a really under appreciated movie IMO. I saw it, loved it and then went online to see everyone moaning about it lol.

HOWEVER, better than E.T.? Noooo way!

I just watched that with my kids, that film really holds up well. The creature design, the fantastic score, the comedy, the actors working off one another as a believable family. You just don't get movies like that anymore.

As much as I like Super 8, it does not have the charm, the range of emotion and range that E.T. has.
