Crumb was haunting. Of all the Criterions I have ever seen, this might be the least rewatchable because it's real, and frightening at that.

#1: Seven Samurai
#2: Yojimbo/ Sanjuro set
#3: Seventh Seal
#4: M
#5: Modern Times

I'm ashamed to say that I only have #2 out of all of those. I really hope to get the others very shortly though. Absolutely essential.

More like the sinful nature of WOMAN. Excellent film. Can't wait to check out the LVT commentary. I'm going to Barnes and Noble now to pick up. they have it on hold for me. Sweet.
Thats exactly what the picture is showing. More on the woman but i think its both of us. The picture does focus way more on the woman though.

Here's what you should do:

Get two from Godard: Breathless and Vivre sa vie (or Pierrot le fou)

Two from Malick: The Thin Red Line and Days of Heaven

Two from Wenders: Wings of Desire and Paris, Texas

And two from Bergman: The Seventh Seal and The Magician

I know that's eight, but hey, they're 50% off.

I appreciated the way this movie was delivered but because of my own ability to comprehend the movie its hard for me to give it a fair shot of a rating. This film is extremely complex and require knowledge of the bible and GOD and satan. Also the history of Christians. I'm a Baptist and i believe in GOD. This movie has nothing negative about GOD himself but more of the sinful nature of man.
May I leave a few comments?

1. Explicit sex does not equate porn.

2. The film challenges just about all conventional cliches about evil (Satan) and repentance Christianity has promoted for centuries. Whether it does so successfully is an entirely different matter. With other words, you are absolutely correct, it is a very complex film and knowledge of the Bible is indeed required to deconstruct it properly.

3. The film has plenty to say about God. He created men, thus everything you see in the film - the suffering, the pain, the evil - can be traced back to Him. I am not entirely sure I agree with the director's radical views, but the idea behind the film is this: If God defeated Satan (evil), why did God let evil flourish in the souls of the men he created? The director argues that He punished men before they had sinned.

That's a really good list! However, I would sacrifice the Godard for some Kurosawa:

Seven Samurai
Youjimbo/Sanjuro

My personal picks among Blu-Rays:

"The Seven Samurai"
"M"
"The Wages of Fear"
"The Seventh Seal"

The fifth one would be a toss-up between "Playtime," "Hunger," "Antichrist," "Yojimbo," "Charade," or "Paths of Glory" depending on what type of movie you'd prefer. I find them all equally worthwhile.

Would reccomend "The Third Man" too, if it wasn't OOP.

If you're shooting for DVDs (yeah, I know ), then I'd also reccomend:

"Brazil"
"The Battle for Algiers"
"The Bicycle Thieves"
"Ace in the Hole"
"Ivan the Terrible"

Was that really necessary? I'm certain such a comment would not be tolerated on the forum. I don't see why it would be necessary to include the comment in your review. And just in case you were wondering, I strongly disagree. I know plenty of people who found peace in religion.
Thank you for your note.

What you quoted is not a generic observation. It actually points out to the fact that after the tragedy He and She use sex as a form of therapy to find peace - unlike religion, which is completely omitted in the film for a specific reason (which the final act makes clear). So, as I mentioned in the previous post, there are some quite radical statements this film produces, and I am not entirely sure I agree with all of them, but I've considered them and decided to point out a few in the review.

You see, this is a Von Trier film after all.

First off my comment clearly says that there is nothing negative about GOD.
To fully understand this movie you need to have a great deal of knowledge about Christan.
1. God created man in his image
2. God never "defeated" satan he kicked him out of heaven with all of his followers.
3. God gave Satan the power on earth to trick men into sin. We need to chose what good or bad. Thus making it rewarding to see his father if you live by his law.

4. MOST OF ALL YOU NEED TO BE A CHRISTIAN AND OR KNOW THE BIBLE. NOT RUMORS BUT ACTUALLY READ IT.

Men believe woman are the gateway to satan. That why there were feared so much during the old days. Since the beginning women have had to power to sway a mans mind. ADAM in EVE, Samson and Delilah, etc. It still happens today.

There isnt one BAD thing about GOD in this film.

Very well. If this is how you interpreted the message of the film, I certainly understand. Now, please, let's not turn this thread into a thread that deals with religion instead of films (and Criterion's output in particular).

Thank you as always for reading our reviews and commenting on them
