No go I'm afraid, no operating system can read the PS3's. It sucks but its part of their security.

Looking for any ideas and suggestions, My original 40 gig PS3 froze up playing COD MW2 and now won't recognize any discs ; I replaced the laser twice and it still does not fix the problem or read any discs? The PS3 works fines besides it not being able to read any discs... Any ideas guys?

Default PS3 screen flashes/glitches

I just got my PS3 back last week (2nd time YLOD, fixed) and noticed now the picture will flash on the screen. Sometimes it glitches like a bad video card. It might go an hour without doing it but after it starts, it becomes worse and worse. Ending with 3 second black screens and maybe 1 second of actually seeing the screen. Only thing I've noticed is that when playing a Disc game or blu-ray movie, it doesn't appear to happen, only when reading things from the HDD or streaming from the PC.

I already called PS and they are shipping out yet another return box. Anyone has this issue before? I currently have my component cables hooked up and they are fine, it's an issue with the HDMI port. I tested the cables on my TV with a friends 40gb PS3. So I believe it is not the cables.

Also they said something about paying $119 to exchange it for a PS3 slim... will they refund the $150 I already paid or are they expecting me to pay $119 on top of the $150. anyone ever done the exchange after paying for the out of warranty?

Wow they offered to pay back the repair cost and sell you a slim? That seems like a very good deal to me. Never had (or seen) that issue before.

I think I'd go for the slim if I were you, save $30 and get a console that "so far" is very reliable.

No, the girl on the phone sounded confused and did not know whether they would refund my 150 and then I could do the exchange. I'm wondering if sony has offered that to anyone else?

Oh I read that wrong...sounded way too good to be true!

You can call back and ask someone else, if they don't know get them to get you a supervisor to ask.

Ok, I'm scared...any help out there?

I got my PS3 1 year an 1 week ago and have never had a problem until now. I played a DVD on it last night without any issue. This morning my daughter popped in Ratchet and Clank and all that came up was this red screen with many languages that said "A serious error has occurred. Contact customer service."

I have turned it on and off and back on multiple times now, the background screen comes up for a couple seconds before the red screen comes up. Any ideas?

Wow. Never heard of that before, can you post pictures? I'd like to see this error message.

If your system is 1 week out of warranty, Sony Customer Service MIGHT fix your system under warranty anyways, it depends on who you get in the contact center. Good luck!

Not sure why its doing that but you might want to try this;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2YnG...eature=related

But be careful as some if these options will delete the contents of your hard drive (movies, music, game saves etc).

Also look on youtube and see what each of the options does and how it will affect your machine.

k, here's what I was told today. First off, the deal is only available to USA, not Canada. Second, it has to be the first option you choose. If you choose the repair option first, you have to stick with it, can't be converted to the exchange option. So I'm outta luck, cause the exchange cost is cheaper then the repair one.

So anyone have the same issue I did?

If I purchase a new PS3, can I take my old Hard Drive out and simply place it into the new PS3? I've done some searching and I am hearing this both ways, that it will work and it won't. Can anyone confirm either way.

The issue is my ps3 has the YLOD and I plan on giving the fix a try, but in the meantime I ordered a slim. Conveniently I purchased a new external hard drive for the ps3 and did not preform a backup yet. I really hate to lose all my data.

You can, but it'll be formatted once its in the new PS3.

What I recommend doing is a data transfer through Ethernet cable, its called PS3 to PS3 transfer once you receive your new PS3.

Does that still work if the old ps3/hd is suffering from a YLOD?

No.

Have you tried the steps laid out in the first post on how to fix your YLOD machine?

I need to get some paste and a heat gun before attempting the fix. I plan on giving that a shot, so if it works no issue. Otherwise I guess all is lost. Thanks for the replies.

Still haven't managed to get the data transfer to work on my PS3's, fails about 80% of the way through.

Finished repairing his PS3 for the third time with the YLOD. I've gotten down to a 45 minute process.

So after a success repair of the YLOD how long will it work until it craps out again?
