I like both too! I would like to rewatch Army of Shadows (1969) soon.

So I watched 1941 last night. Overall it's a solid movie. I enjoyed it! It's difficult to explain it but aside from the comedic elements it kinda feels like an aborted Indiana Jones adventure. It gave me strong Temple of Doom Club Obi Wan vibes in places and Raiders/Last Crusade vibes in other parts.

It's nowhere near a bad movie IMO.

I've never heard of this before. I'm going to have to add that to my movie playlist.

Also, veering off from that, I'll provide an unpopular opinion (maybe it's popular, I don't know) :

There is no such thing as a bad Elvis movie. I've watched every movie he ever starred in when he was alive and I've enjoyed them all each to a different degree.

Glad you enjoyed 1941!

ELVIS is excellent. It was the first time Carpenter and Kurt Russell worked together, and Russell remains my favorite Elvis impersonator. Great movie.

It disappoints me to never see anyone mention this one on their Top 10 list on Criterion. Such an underrated film.

It fits in more snugly with Zemeckis' filmography than Spielberg's. It's more like I Wanna Hold Your Hand or Used Cars than Raiders or Close Encounters.

I don't know if I would have it on a top 10 of Criterion films, but probably a top 50 or top 100. It's a very good film nonetheless.

And it's not really underrated at all, it is rather quite acclaimed by both critics and the rest of the public that have seen it.

The characters I feel were definitely handled in a way similar to characters in other Zemeckis movies, so based on characters alone, I'd agree with that. However the world and the atmosphere/cinematography fits right in among Spielgberg's work body. It's quite the hybrid, and I don't hate it.

I think it was a good excuse for Steven to be wacky. His summer hit followed by a more whimsical and family friendly affair alien film, I think this allowed him to have more fun with camera techniques and tone.
It's also interesting to look at his contemporaries and see what they were doing around then. Lucas had his hands tied with Star Wars, you mentioned Zemeckis' I Wanna Hold Your Hand which was the year earlier, De Palma had The Fury in 1978, Scorsese's output was New York, New York in '77 and his The Band documentary in 1979 The Last Waltz, and Coppola was able to breath a sigh of release with Apocalypse Now finally coming out in '79 as well.
Three's just something cool to see the difference in films from each one around then, as I'm sure they talked to each other and ribbed each other for the faults/bombs but praised each other too, especially for the triumphs.

Your first point fits in that it's underrated when talking about Criterion releases.
Not as many people will name drop it as much as they will a Tarkovsky film or something from Bergman.

There does seem to be a difference between underrated and underseen.

I've never seen Investigation of a Citizen Under Suspicion (it's in my Netflix DVD queue at spot #251 at the moment), personally.

I commend FFC for all that he went through on that film. Really glad he did it the best he could and I love all t he cuts that are out there.
Unpop opinion: the French plantation scene is my fave scene out of all of Apocalypse Now.

Honestly, this upcoming show about the making of the Godfather should be about Apocalypse Now.

No, it doesn't.

When something is underrated, it can't really have a great reception, because then it is generally liked and rated quite well from the beginning.

You seem to mean that it isn't mentioned as much as other films, which is different. The majority that have seen it have rated it quite high in general, just look at the IMDb score, critical reception etc.

I still haven't seen any other cut of Apocalypse Now other than the theatrical cut, and I've owned the Redux cut in different formats for about 15 years.

But yeah, the making of Apocalypse Now feels like it would be the right kind of overly dramatic real life story that modern Hollywood would want to make. But still, it's not like Hearts of Darkness is going anywhere.

Why should that one be displaced?! Just because it's gonna be terrible? What if I have the unpopular opinion that it's great?
