Hope you people are coping well with the Coronavirus crisis. Myself unfortunately am not allowed a "work from home" situation. At least I won't be stuck for entertainment options while "social distancing" in the weekend.
Anyhoo, couple nights ago I watched Häxan (pronounced as Hexen), the visually arresting 1922 movie on Witches and Witch-hunts from Danish director Benjamin Christensen. Häxan's themes and visual design have had a profound influence on fantasy / horror movies through the ages. It was probably one of the earliest films to tackle the history of witch-hunts, how in a climate of superstition and suspicion, millions (yes!) of women accused of witchcraft were subjected by church authorities to torture, to force confession of their misdeeds and then burnt at the stake. Of course, Christensen's film tries to both have its cake and eat it too. So while the film-maker directly addresses the audience about the cruelty innocent women had to endure purely because a) they were old / deformed in some way b) dealt with herbal remedies c) had enemies among their neighbors, he also provides extravagant fantasy images of witches cavorting with demons, and taking part in such charming rituals as kissing the devil's butt and giving birth to cats. He references the Loudun possessions, which were also the theme of later films like Mother Joan of the Angels and the more notorious Ken Russell's The Devils. In the last part of Häxan, Christensen comes to the contemporary age, and discusses how what is diagnosed as hysteria now would have been classified as witchcraft or demonic possession in the dark ages. The social commentary is slightly clunky but there's no denying Häxan's immense visual power. The design and look of the witches and the demonic creatures, inspired from folklore and ancient illustrations have in themselves served as reference for a host of films that came afterwards. Of course, Häxan was banned in several countries due to its sensational content. In the US, a significantly truncated version called Witchcraft Through the Ages was released in 1968 with a narration by William (Naked Lunch) Burroughs. It was more recently that a restoration of Christensen's original version gained traction, released on DVD by Criterion in 2001, and a more recent 2K restoration put out on blu-ray by the label. Of course, the new transfer represents a major upgrade over the DVD, with stunning detail in close-ups. The score, based on cues printed in the original theatrical release notes is presented as DTS-HDMA 5.0 and comes across strongly. I have yet to finish going through the extras, which include the alternate US cut, critic's commentary, image gallery describing the sources of some of the film's visuals, and even a director's introduction that originally accompanied the 1941 re-release of the film. ![]() |

Yes, my e-mail said the same as the one Sifox211 got (posted above). I also bought from the last 2 flash sales, but am not a Channel subscriber. With no expiration date on it I'll save it for next flash sale. It was a nice surprise bonus.

Watched Jeanne Dielman for the first time and loved it. It was an oddly perfect film to watch being stuck at home. I’ve seen a few other Ackerman films, but are there other films besides hers that have a minimalist/hypnotic spectator quality like this that you can recommend?
