I've heard about that before. Is that how it actually happened or just a rumor?

Ironic since I wanted to see you give a film a 1/5, and then you give it to Fight Club?! oh well
Don't you just LOVE irony?

I thought you would enjoy it more (obviously) and really enjoy the story and some of the themes, but I definitely missed the mark on this one! although I find it puzzling how you were uninterested here, but entertained by... Boring Buttons... ?
I expected at least a 3/5 for it (of course I didn't know much beyond who was in it and the famous line before seeing it); I was pretty far off as well

I was surprised at how much I liked Button (I think I mentioned that in my review of it). I didn't expect it to work nearly as well for me as it did

The Shop Around the Corner

1940 directed by Ernst Lubitsch with James Stewart, Margaret Sullavan & Frank Morgan

Wait, What? A 1940 something movie with James Stewart not done by Frank Capra? What in the world made me go back to this old one? It had been a while since I last seen it and I decided to pull it out off the shelve and see it. For I have to say I truly enjoy these old 1940's movies of Stewart. Sure a lot of them all seem to be very similar and he is not always the first one that come to mind when you ask the question "who was a great actor" but for me he was. The story is rather simple. If you are familiar with You've Got Mail, well you know all about The Shop Around The Corner, it was the first movie made with this story. It's base on a play by Miklós László. A boy in a girl work together and don't like each other but there is a twist, they are exchanging letters not knowing it and they are falling in love with each other. There is a few details that are different but the basic idea is there.

This one is only available on DVD for now, if you are curious to see it. I hope for a Blu-ray release but the chances are rather slim. I can tell you however that the picture quality is very nice playing in my Sony 350, upscaling is very good. Also a word of caution. This movie is from 1940 and look and feel a lot like a theater play. There is no music during the entire time except for the opening credit and the closing. That can sometime be a bit strange for those not use in seeing older movies.

Do I recommend it? Oh yes I do. Stewart & Sullavan did four movies together between 1936-40 (think of it like Tom Hanks & Meg Ryan) and each one was very good. This was number 3 and it's in my book their best one. If you only seen You've Got Mail, I say give this one a chance, you won't regret it.

Paul

I wasn't sure what to think of this, films with Simon Pegg can be hit or miss without Edgar Wright, and Nick Frost isn't in anything without Simon Pegg. But I like Greg Mottola's films, so I was mixed on it.

For a comedy, it's pretty good. Sure it's cliched (typical road movie stuff like pissing off rednecks and gay jokes for example) but when Paul actually comes in, it's pretty great. With some daft quirks like crazy Christians and Bill Hader and that other dude who is usually quite creepy who was in Superbad (Dude who got kicked in the balls)

And an awesome cameo so awesome that it has to be brought up, but be a sin to spoil. It's truly a fist bump moment when
[Show spoiler]Diana Keeton
drops the line to the cameo

It's basically a bunch of nerd reference, sex jokes, crazy quotations and a few explosions, it's nothing special but well worth a watch

8/10

Also, for an R-Rated comedy, CGI looks quite amazing

I agree that Button is better, but 1/5 for Fight Club? That rating should be reserved for amateur, piss-poor films.

Rodrigo Cortes' USD 3 million budgeted thriller deals with everybody's greatest fear; being buried alive in an enclosed coffin, presumably six feet under the ground with limited supply of air. The film borrows many aspects from Alfred Hitchcock's films and in many ways, Buried seems like a film that Alfred Hitchcock would make if he were still alive today.

Ryan Reynolds plays Paul Conroy, a truck driver in Iraq who is kidnapped and buried alive in an enclosed coffin. A Zippo lighter, a Blackberry, a pen, a blade and a light tube are some of the items provided to him - all of it he must use to get himself out of the coffin. Early in the movie we see and hear Paul call various law enforcement departments and is put on hold. Having a call put on hold in everyday life is frustrating. Being put on hold while in a coffin is possibly a thousand times more frustrating. Imagine being asked to calm down while being buried in a coffin!

Buried (2010) bears many resemblances to 127 Hours in that both lead characters are trapped in an enclosed space with limited mobility. However, unlike 127 Hours, Buried does not take any shortcuts by showing flashbacks, hallucinations or shots outside of the coffin. What we see and learn about Paul Conroy is through the telephone conversations he has throughout the film and we are expected to care about Paul enough to want him to stay alive at the end of the film. In my estimations, this makes Buried a much harder film to accomplish. I have yet to see 127 Hours so I cannot make any comparisons but on its own, Buried is a thoroughly entrancing film to watch.

Buried is a film that lives and dies by Ryan Reynolds' performance and it is no exaggeration to say that Reynold delivers the finest performance of his career so far in Buried. Much of the acting required of Ryan Reynolds' is through his facial expressions and voice-work and while Reynolds does a brilliant job of conveying the right emotions at the right time, his performance is complimented by the excellent direction of Cortes with some highly innovative and varied shots.

I remember reading Roger Ebert's review for Unstoppable where he praised the film's screenplay for coming up with exciting situations for trains being stuck on tracks but nothing in Unstoppable compares to what Chris Sparling has done with Buried in creating a variety of situations within the confinements of a coffin, each more exhilarating than the last.

There is one particular sequence in the middle of the film when Paul Conroy has a telephone conversation with his employers' lawyers. It is a moment that stirs every emotions within me and it is a very heart-felt moment if only because we have seen real-life situations such as the one portrayed in Buried. While Buried is an incredibly exciting film to watch, it has many intelligent things to say as well. How far would you go to to get a paycheck? How much is one life worth? How incompetent and silly are our law enforcement officers' telephone operators and the procedures they follow?

Rodrigo Cortes toyed with my emotions like it was an organ. The ending in Buried reminds me of Hitchcock and what he said about the "bomb under the table" theory in that when a bomb explodes, it's surprise but not knowing when the bomb explodes, that is suspense. The film is as brilliant as it is satisfying. You will get what I mean when you watch the film. Saying more about the film will spoil it for the audience but I can wholeheartedly say Buried is one of the best thrillers I have seen since the turn of the millennium.

Buried fared well considering the film's budget but it is a shame that it is not seen by a wider audience. I worry about Hollywood executives and the level of respect the global audience is given if they think we are not 'smart' enough to appreciate films such as these but then I worry just as much about the audience at the American box-office when I see some of the films topping the box-office.

4.5/5
Ya I wanted to see this...it was in the theatres for what? a day?

One and Done without a doubt.

Rating - 1/5

I did a search of the thread for this movie for other reviews and discussion and while doing so I see Bearcat gave Benjamin Button a 2/5 and he gives this a 5/5....well I guess we are opposites because I give this a 1/5 and Button a 4.75/5.
I support this review.

Here's what my ratings mean:
https://forum.blu-ray.com/movies/127...ml#post4136600

I've made exceptions to those descriptions where a movie really isn't a bad movie, but I just don't get into it (Psycho); Fight Club leans towards that.

One of my favorite movies of all time. This was actually an extra on You've Got Mail but it was on a Region 1 DVD. I flipped when I found out.

Actually I am not surprised.
I gave it 2/5 on my first viewing.
I gave it 3/5 on my second.
I gave it 4.75/5 on my third.
I gave it 5/5 on my fourth.

I gurantee that it will happen to you to if you give it more chances. You just have to be in the right mood.

Fight Club is a weird movie for me. I don't really like it a whole lot. But I own it. And that's because, for some reason unbeknownst to me, whenever the movie is on, I sit and watch it. I can't explain it, and I finally stopped fighting against it and bought it.

And now I never watch it.
