We're talking about the TV series here, not the Rebuild films.

On which, my point was that the licensor in Japan may not accept a low offer on Eva TV for international rights, thus why Netflix got it for worldwide streaming- they have the money to pay for it. Perhaps the price in Germany would be lower than, say, North America, due to the smaller market, but I don't think the difference would be as big as you're thinking considering the value of the IP in Japan, thus making its price, even in a smaller market, most likely higher than the average series.

Again, if you or anyone who has factual evidence can prove me or Dandy incorrect, I'd love to hear it. I'm not trying to destroy you or your opinion, I'm stating my viewpoint in how I interpret the situation (with less frustration today than last night, for which I do apologize for such damning diction).

That just makes you look like an a$$ by saying that. Where did you hear such statistics on how much was paid, with Wolf Children from Kazé as an example? I'm not sure if it works the same way in Europe, but in most cases here, I can't get an answer if I ask an anime distributor how much they paid for something, as the numbers usually don't want to be thrown around, and are confidential in many cases.

If we've got people paying $200 dollars for a 15 year old DVD set on eBay, what makes someone think that the number of buyers wouldn't double if the series were on Blu-ray at an affordable price?

Maybe I should do too.
But the point is again, there's no justification to an artificial price increase, whatever the price of the license is. Unless you guys ask for it, your local favorite distributor will do it for you.
It can be sold at whatever price the owner of it wants to sell it for and if no one wants to buy it then no one will buy it. The justification is they feel it's worth that much because things sell at that price and they have and will. There's your answer, thanks for playing!

Yup, at the end of the day these "artificially high" prices exist because Anime fans are barmy enough to pay it, and when a few of these Ultra Editions bomb we'll probably see a change in their release policy, but given the prevalance of them already I don't think they are bombing, so why shouldn't Anime Ltd. and the likes go for it? They're running a business at the end of the day.

Yup. Anime fans consistently overestimate their own niches. There are tons of NA casual Anime fans that don't even care about NGE; they watch their few mainstream shows and that's about it. A lot of the recent thirst can be attributed to people simply not having access to the show for so long. But people have seen it now and gotten it out of their systems.

It's still a huge property. But that's brand name recognition more than anything.

One thing I have kept an eye on is merchandise sales. Hot Topic has been selling t-shirts, sweaters and various other (pins/figs) Evangelion items like crazy. The t-shirts don't stick around for long. The Hot Topic exclusive Asuka t-shirt design has received 3 different runs, the most recent being a winter hoodie. I've got the original black t-shirt and that sold out within about 2-3 days once the series hit Netflix, as did the Rei design. During the fall they reprinted the same Asuka design on a red-ish background and that sold out a few weeks ago. The hoodie I mentioned went up last week. I frequently check Hot Topic site listings for anime merch, just more of my useless knowledge lol.

I was recently speaking with one of the workers at my local Hot Topic and he said they can't keep the Eva shirts in stock at that location. So, Eva merch definitely sells well and there is demand for the series. I can't see a DVD/Blu-ray release not selling very well over here.

That's cool. I'm glad to hear that Hot Topic is doing well. I'm sad because they closed their store at my closest mall, Ridgedale.

No doubt the Blu-rays would sell like hotcakes. The show is in extreme fad mode right now and discs haven't been available for years.

I think that My Hero Academia is a show that is analogous to NGE from a merchandising perspective. It's kind of bigger than it is. All sorts of gear from t-shirts, to keychains, to high-end figures are available for it everywhere. I like MHA quite a bit. The show is very good. But I don't think that it's of inherently higher quality than several other similarly branded shows or properties. It just happens to be one of those name brands (that made it bigtime).

It has been pretty much since 1995.

No way it will live up to the expectations fans have built up for it. Unless we get an uncensored 3 way with Misato, Rei and Asuka with Shinji blowing Kaworu for those fans, I can't imagine it being anything but a disappointment.

I mean, I don't think the fallout will be near as bad as it was back in 96 when disgruntled fans defaced and vandalized the studio walls on their building if indeed this new one does underwhelm, but we'll see.

Look on the "bright" side: last time that happened we got End of Evangelion out of it, and people seem to really like that one.

I mainly don't like how they swapped Toji's big moment with Asuka. I think I like the first one so much because it follows the original anime so closely. When things start to get changed around is what I'm not a fan of, but I guess that would be the entire point of these films.

I'm not a big Eva fan, but I am more-so fascinated by the complexity of it... but that fascination isn't necessarily "all positive" if that makes sense. I think Anno is in fact a bit pretentious at times with whatever he is trying to sell to the audience with this series.

But with that said, 1.0 was extremely excellent. To be honest, I always enjoyed the episodes in the original before Asuka joined, so the first movie was absolutely on-point when condensed as it was. The action, drama, animation, and soundtrack were all on-point.

With fans of the original series, I couldn't see any reason why they would dislike 1.0. It is pretty true to the source without much deviation and actually is coherent. 2.0 was meh for me at best while 3.0 would probably be the same gripes most fans have.

I doubt 4.0 can turn it around. I think we would be awfully naïve at this point to think Anno is going to give fans what they want (or even a fifth of what they expect).

When I first watched the series on Netflix it wasn't until Asuka arrived that my interest in the series grew. She turned the series on its head in a good way. The first six episodes were okay but they weren't very interesting for my first viewing. On rewatches I like the beginning of Eva a lot more, same can be said for the series as a whole.

One of my problems with the Rebuild films is how they changed Asuka's character and because of that I don't think I'll ever be fully on board with them. I'd much rather have gotten sequel movies, rather than these retold versions with tons of alterations. The updated animation is incredible but everything else is meh, especially Mari.
