[Show spoiler] 10/28/18: Dropping the Hammer… -Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (1969): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() -Dracula Has Risen From The Grave (1968): ![]() ![]() ![]() -Taste The Blood Of Dracula (1970): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Plenty of cleavage, ketchupy blood and stiff-upper-lip British melodrama in today’s trio of terror from the biggest name in British horror, Hammer. Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed is one of the later and better entries in the Hammer series, with the obligatory appearance by Peter Cushing as Victor Frankenstein, working, as ever, to unravel the mysteries of the mind and body, this time looking to place the brain of a former scientist compatriot (George Pravda) now imprisoned in a madhouse into the body of the Asylum’s head doctor (Freddie Jones) in order to cure his insanity. It’s a bracingly bloody affair, with a notably memorable opening (Frankenstein lopping off heads with a scythe!) and a firey conflagration of a climax. Dracula Has Risen From The Grave features Christopher Lee (in his third turn as the Count), resurrected when blood from a priest’s head wound drips into his mouth in a (successful) attempt to drive evil from his moldering castle by placing a giant crucifix on the doorway and reciting an incantation. Incensed, Drac swears vengeance upon the Monsignor (Rupert Davies) who performed the ceremony, eliciting the help of the cowed priest (Ewan Hooper) as his familiar to worm his way into the orbit of the Monsignor’s sister-in-law (Veronica Carlson) and make her into one of his vampiric brides. It’s a resolutely…okay entry in the series, not as atmospheric as the earlier films, not as memorably insane as the later installments from the 1970s. Taste The Blood Of Dracula picks up right where the previous entry ended, with a wandering businessman (Rory Kinnear) chancing upon Drac’s gruesome impalement upon a crucifix and his dissolving into a puddle of blood the businessman collects and socks away for a rainy day. He finds a group interested in purchasing it soon after, a young Lord (Ralph Bates) who has a keen interest in the dark arts, and a trio of well-to-do but bored sophisticates (Geoffrey Keen, John Carson and Peter Sallis...the voice of Wallace in the Wallace & Gromit shorts!) who are intrigued enough to mix the powered remains of Drac with drops of the young Lord’s blood, resulting in a frothy red milkshake that only the Lord has the courage to quaff. He falls down, gagging, begging for assistance, only to have the terrified sophisticate trio beat him to death with their canes and fists and feet. They leave his body in a panic, only to have the now-empty vessel crack open to reveal Drac himself (Lee, as always), who swears to kill the three men by turning their most trusted loved ones against them. This is a superior piece of schlock compared to Grave, with more colorful photography, better death scenes and even flashes of nudity that prove the then-nascent MPAA was becoming more lenient in what Hammer was allowed to show as opposed to tell. |

House (1977) - I blind purchased this a few months back primarily based on watching an old Cinemassacre Monster Madness review. I was not disappointed! First time seeing it, instantly was mesmerized. So much fun, so interesting to watch. Incredible camera work. Pretty sure this is the first time I've ever seen a kill scene where the instrument of death was a number of futons! Prince of Darkness - Another blind buy from the recent Scream Factory sale, another I enjoyed greatly on first watch! Really interesting and unique plot, great looking transfer, cool movie. Really glad I bought it. The Fog (1980) - Followed up two first time watches with one of my favorites. Bought the Scream Factory steel 2 or 3 months back, been waiting until it was close to Halloween to throw it in. Really happy with it, great picture and sound. Enjoyed the few special features I checked out as well, hope to watch the rest in the future. Fun day of movie watching! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

the rage - carrie 2 - 0/5
ooooh boy. this got a theatrical release? this cost five million more than scream to produce? how? it looks like it was made for lifetime. but this was a studio release. with advertising behind it. but why did they expect it to be successful? it's just so bland and generic. the worst part? everything. (not an exaggeration) not to be hyperbolic, but when you consider how much they spent making this, is this the worst sequel that has ever come out in the horror genre? I mean... all the terrible sequels we saw in the late 80s and early 90s... they didn't cost twenty one million bucks. |

![]() ![]() 37. UPGRADE ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks to everyone who watched and recommended this. I checked this out for the first time and liked it quite a bit. It's a very original mix of sci-fi, horror, mystery, action and even martial arts. Very good performances by all, especially Logan Marshall Green as the lead. I liked this enough that I will probably add it to my collection. [Show spoiler]

DEEP RED
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This was my first viewing of Argento's Giallo classic and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I continue to marvel at how thin plotting, some howler dialogue and let's just say variable performances (not helped by frequently atrocious dubbing) don't hinder his films in the slightest. The garish visual and aural intensity is hypnotic and the whole film is suffused with an eerie effectiveness. The disturbing imagery in some of those horror set-pieces is brilliant. There are those who balk at the violent deaths predominate in Argento's films, but they're as intense and over the top stylized as they should be in a film of this type. No matter the structural flaws in his films, Argento's artistry shines through. Bravo! VAMPIRE CIRCUS ![]() ![]() ![]() I hadn't seen this Hammer curio in ages and it was great fun to revisit it. A truly novel premise is served up with the traditional sex and violence and delivered with the flair and stylishness that gave Hammer its reputation. On a side note: With some jarring gore and frequent baring of breasts, I did find it hard to believe this carried a PG rating... ![]() Last edited by MJD64; 10-29-2018 at 09:45 AM. |

Over the past few days, I had an 80s slasher movie marathon. I tried to pick one film from each year and watch them in release order. These are the films I watched:
35. Friday the 13th ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 36. The Burning ![]() ![]() ![]() 37. Madman ![]() ![]() ![]() 38. Sleepaway Camp ![]() ![]() ![]() 39. A Nightmare on Elm Street ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 40. Slaughter High ![]() ![]() ![]() 41. Stagefright ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 42. Child's Play ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 43. I, Madman ![]() ![]() ![]() Friday the 13th is a classic and the 80s would have been a very different decade without it. I followed up Friday the 13th with The Burning, which is about a killer named Cropsy who targets kids at a nearby camp. It was inspired by Friday the 13th, but it was very effective, and it has some great death scenes. Madman was my 1982 pick, and it features Madman Marz, a deranged killer that goes after camp counselors after they call his name. It appears to have a lower budget than Friday the 13th or The Burning, but it does star Gaylen Ross from Dawn of the Dead. Had they made sequels, Madman Marz could have been an 80s horror icon. It has some very catchy music. Sleepaway Camp is low budget, but it is effective and possibly the most disturbing of the summer camp slashers. It is about Angela and Ricky, two cousins that go to a summer camp where a serial killer starts killing off the counselors and campers. If you haven't seen this one, or don't know how it plays out, I won't say more. I think Sleepaway Camp 2 is more fun to watch, though. A Nightmare on Elm Street is a classic and one of my favorite horror films. I never get tired of seeing this one. Slaughter High was one I had never seen before. I bought it on Blu-ray last October, but this was the first time I got around to seeing it, and it was a pleasant surprise. I know that we weren't supposed to like any of the characters, mainly because they don't seem to care about what they've done to Marty, but I found myself engrossed in what would happen to them. The location was creepy, too. Stagefright is an Italian slasher film from Michele Soavi, and it is great. It's about a serial killer that escapes from a hospital, follows an actress to her play rehearsal, and locks everyone inside as he kills them off one by one. Child's Play is a classic I think most of us have seen. Chucky is probably the most recognizable killer doll, and the original film is great. I, Madman was another one I hadn't seen before. It had been sitting on my shelf for a long time -- probably since the Blu-ray came out -- but it was unique and had great atmosphere. The killer, which comes to life when the main character, Virginia, reads his book, and he begins killing people close to her while. At first, I wasn't sure if this was really a slasher, but by the second half, it does fit in. There are plenty of slashers to choose from, and if I were to follow this up again, I probably would have cut down on the summer camp slashers and picked one of the dorm slashers like House on Sorority Row or Final Exam. The early 80s has a lot to choose from, and it's interesting to see how the slasher film evolved throughout the decade. I found it more difficult to find movies in the latter half than I did in the first half unless I chose to pick another film from a franchise. I skipped 1985 because my choices, based on what I had in my collection, were another Jason or Freddy sequel or The Mutilator, and I'm not a big fan of The Mutilator. 1.
