Blu-ray Samurai

Some have unfairly suggested that with GB2016 costing upwards of $170m plus, that the only reason that Reitman Jnr got to make Afterlife was because it had the modest budget of only $50m, and Sony knew the classic GB fans were there to cover it. I've re-edited my previous post.

Bingo. Reitman having his father as Producer on the film was the thing that sealed the deal. This film isn't a cheap cash in, it's a next-gen story that connects emotionally to the previous films.

No no no, that's not how it works. $30 million at that time would be the equivalent of somewhere between $75-$80 million today. You can argue all you want, that's just facts. |

I find it hard to believe this only cost $50 million. That isn't even a modest budget these days for a film like this. For a franchise film, it's practically an indie budget.
Also, man that Rise of Skywalker thread sure dried up. Our boy must be bored. |

Most of the movie seems set on a farm, in a rural town. That's an easy way to film for cheap.

Afterlife was shot in Alberta, Canada, with street scenes shot in Fort McLeod. I can imagine super-brief shots of the original cast taking place in NYC, but outside of that i'll wager there will be no major action at all set in New York. On May 17, 2019, Dan Aykroyd hinted the budget would be way under $100 million and hinted it would be between $30 and 50 million, with a lot of practical effects and limited CGI.

And my point still stands that 50 million isn't that bad IMO. You can spew facts all you want, that's just my opinion.

I'm not even sure where the 50 million number came from, since I don't think Afterlife's budget has been confirmed yet. This is all speculative in that case.

Look at the reasons for this film doesn't need a budget north of $50m:
- The action takes place in small-town America. The production chooses to shoot the action in Alberta, Canada for tax reasons. - Outside of star cameo's, the film has no major stars with Paul Rudd. - Jason Reitman is a character-based film director, visual effects driven films are outside of his experience. - Sony weren't going to make a 3rd GB film using the original cast. This film came about for a reason, a reason that meant not spending the best part of two-thirds of the budget of GB2016 on! |
