It took me until last night to finally watch Prey. No real reason I hadn’t…it just kept slipping through the cracks I guess.

Man…I LOVED this movie. 4.5/5 for me. If anyone, for some reason, just forgot to watch this for half a year like I did…it’s a treat.

Out of curiosity, how long has it been since you've seen Predator '87?

I’m still holding out for a ever fading chance of a disc release. Resisting the urge to watch for now.

Prey is a movie I would've have went to see in theaters. It looks interesting. But here's my rant; Prey is exclusive to hulu, which I have no interest in subscribing to. If they don't bring this out on Disc in the future, I'll probably never see it. Same with a lot of these streaming only movies stuck on a pay subscription channel that never see the light of a disc or theater. No way I'm subscribing to all these different channels if I don't see a lot more worth subscribing to.

D-, subscribed for 1 month and then dropped it after watching the shows I wanted to see, probably to never see them on disc. That was under $10 without commercials. Now I bet D- has forced commercials for that "lower tier". Nice... Like they weren't making enough money, and now want to break up the flow of a movie with advertisements to make more money with, while refusing to put these shows on blu ray UHD, DVD.

Maybe there is some kind of poll to let these pay services to not forget the fanbase of physical disc media still going. The thing is, these corporations are sadly thrilled to lock everything in digitally versus having to worry about manufacturing discs, distribute them, and deal with the costs involved.

On topic, I heard Prey was generally a good movie. I'm a fan of the Predator concept, but if hulu doesn't offer a lot more worth checking out, I won't subscribe temporarily or ever.

Exactly, I have it via Disney+ here, but still not watching as long as there is hope for a disc.

Take it with a grain of salt but 72% of people gave the film a 4 rating or higher. Personally I enjoyed it and would buy a physical copy if it became available.

Once Disney amasses enough content for you to buy another month, Just use a VPN to get an IP address in the UK and Star will appear in the filters. Then you can watch Prey there.

I gave it two stars

That’s all well and good, but at some point aren’t you just hurting yourself? It’s not like streaming is some trend or fad.

I mean, it’d be like NOT listening to a CD of (insert indie band here) in 1995 because you’re desperately and spitefully holding out for it to come out on cassette, the previous format.

It isn’t going anywhere, I can wait until it’s all but certain to not get a disc. I want my first experience to be the best A/V quality. Would rather buy it blind.
I don’t know why so many film fans/ members struggle to grasp this notion. Ownership is different entirely to a viewing on a streaming service.

If a film is 100% exclusive to a streaming service, I hate it but I will watch it and except it. However, if there is a chance of a disc, I will hang on.
It’s a bit jarring having Predator and Predator 2 in my collection but not this, especially as it’s supposed to be the best one since the original.

Disney's recent offerings are hit or (mostly) miss when it comes to audio, do their films released under the Fox label not have this problem?

It's a shame, really, their earlier stuff is so good. Reign of Fire is still one of my favorite discs to use if I need to do any tweaking or recalibration. It also helps that's a great movie.

By the way, not trying to start any Disney bashing. Plenty of threads for that already.

I very much doubt it was the best since the original. I could see people considering it one of the best movies of the year.

To me, a film that is streaming-exclusive is the same thing as a "direct to home video" release was back in the good ole days. Except worse, as Comcast can and often does drop streaming quality on me. At least a DVD would guarantee a smooth 480p, streaming can't.

I don’t know what to tell you. This isn’t a cheap movie with a tv star smiling on the cover. It’s a 65 million dollar budget movie that is gorgeous and great.

When Scorsese puts a 200 million dollar film on Netflix does it somehow strip him of his filmmaking and budget and he is making something akin to an Olsen Twins video?

Things have changed. I’m not telling you to like it. I’m not even telling you to accept it.

I’m telling you your analogy is no longer apt.

I didn't know Comcast still offered dial-up.

Budget doesn't matter, every Netflix/Hulu/whathaveyou movie has hit me like a Direct to Video flick. It's not so much about the quality of these films, but how they're treated like content, content that is nowadays lucky to get a 2 week hype cycle before being lost in the churn.

Of course, The Irishman would likely have come on 2 discs/VHS

Any and all Comcast service can become dial-up at any time, all y'all meme fans can picture the scene where the woman in the dress morphs into Agent Smith to sum this up

I have a dream that one day film will be judged not by the medium it is played on, but by the content of the movie.
