The YLOD fix is a temporary fix. It could go broke anytime but it's better than having the YLOD. I've heard they will last up to a year after the fix. I recently fixed my 60 gig 3 year old unit. So far so good. Much thanks to DJwhetzel video on YLOD.

I lasted right about month. About to give it the second go. At the very least, I'm going to deactivate this time and stick to Home and online stuff. Maybe some Blu-ray movies.

Pardon me if this has already been addressed (I did look); but is the YLOD problem affecting certain generations of the PS3 or is it hitting everybody?

At first it was affecting the launch day PS3's but there are now reports of the dreaded YLOD affecting a small percentage of the new slim models too.

Depends on how you want your PS3 fixed.

-If you send it into Sony, they mail you the disc back.
-If you fix it yourself, well, no need.
-If you don't want to fix it, but just take out the disc, then follow my guide to how to replace the laser.

Hey thanks Mike. I would be correct to assume, then, that once you pop open the BD drive, you can lift the disc right out?

I'm kinda thinking that I will just pick up a new slim model, and then see if I can't repair my 60GB SKU on my own, just for fun. Either way, I wanted to make sure there was a reliable way to extract the disc that is already trapped in there.

Thanks again.

If you do the repair with heat gun, you can eject the disc once it powers up. If you own (or can borrow a heat gun) the only cost is thermal paste (arctic silver-look on ebay) for $5 to $7.
I've done the repair twice and am using a supplemental fan to see if I can stretch out the life span of the last repair.
Give it a try and see what happens. It's a lot of fun to pull the thing apart, fix it, and watch it rise from the dead.
Good luck.

Yup, it'll pop out or you can do what Clark suggested, its pretty cool fixing it on your own (eventhough it may not be permanent)

Default My PS3 Stopped Playing Blu-Rays Need Help!!!!

I was watching Terminator Salvation tonight, and the movie froze just when john conner was looking for kyle reese at skynet. I tried playing it agian and it would not play. It gave me error messages, and the blue light was blinking. I tried other blu-ray's and a ps3 game all with the same results. I tried a dvd and it played just fine. I am assuming the Blu-Ray Diode has died. I got the PS3 AUG 8th 2008 never had an issue untill tonight. Does anyone know if this is fixable? How much it would it cost? CND for course. & is it worth fixing, or is it cheaper to get a new PS3 I have the 40GB Spiderman 3 Bundle.

Please give some advice.

Hey blurayjunkie, I had the exact same problem happen to me. It was about 2 weeks ago and I have a 60GB from June 2007. What I've concluded so far is that we probably need a new blu-ray lens, or at least open it up to clean the lens.

If not, prepare to be without a player for a while...

Sounds like a new BD drive laser is required.

Look on the internet and you can find "Do It Yourself" instructions on how to replace it yourself. Otherwise, send it to Sony and have them do it for $150.

There is "How To Replace your Blu-Ray laser" information on the 1st post of this thread explaining exactly what you need and how much it costs. Then you can decide whether or not the fix is worth the cost or if you'd rather spend $300 on a new one.

I attempted my YLOD fix over the weekend. I was truely amazed when I started the newly repaired PS3 up to find it was working. I was getting ready to do the CAT5 transfer of files when the YLOD came right back.

My assumption is I either put too much thermal compound or not enough. Don't really know.

You may not have "reflowed" enough, too and the amount of paste could be good.

Called Sony, they said it woul cost $190 to fix including tax and shipping. I think i am going to look around locally to see it I can get it repaired for cheaper.

I didn't see this issue mentioned on the front page and i looked through the thread a little and didn't see anything so I hope this hasn't been asked before.

My ps3 turns on just fine. it plays music, games, and videos on the hard drive, and loads ps3 games on the hard drive.

The problem is it won't load blu ray movies or dvd's. It shows up on the xmb but when I select it, it goes to a black screen and freezes.

Also, on games on the hard drive, it went to a black screen and froze when I tried quitting, and the disc game I put in froze when I tried to go to the XMB to exit out. (not black screen though, just froze on the xmb)

On the games, the front button still works to turn it off, but when it freezes on movies, only the back switch works. When it turns back on, (with either method) it has a screen that says the system didn't turn off correctly and asks if I want to send a message to Sony about it.

I have a launch 60 gig ps3, hooked up straight to my tv through HDMI

Thanks for the help,

The latest fix didn't even last me 2 whole weeks.

Looks like I can either pay $150 to get it repaired or go out and buy a Slim.

Or you can exchange your PS3 into Sony for a Slim.
