Woohoo! Picked up a second HD-SUB10 in maple for $82 off eBay! That puts me at a total of $159 for a pair of HD-SUB10s.

(childish voice on) I was never asked to post pics of my setup. (childish voice off)

I'll post mine up when I get the wire management and HTPC done.

I have it ~2 feet off of the ground on a box full of China. Just don't tell that's what I'm using it for or I might get into trouble.
the sub also has very little movement from it too when I crack up the volume. The crossover is set to 120hz on my 606, 120hz on the sub with half gain and DBass turned off. I haven't found a way to turn off the sub crossover yet.

I don't know for sure what type of affect the box would have compared to A riser , I am sure it is different though ! Try putting you're x-over at 80hz & see what that does !!

I placed the receiver xover at 80hz and the fronts (Polk M50) at 80hz and it sounds better. I can hear the voice coil bottoming out when it plays through the fort battle scene in Last of the Mohicans. (My test DVD)

  1. Connect a sub cable to the receiver's LFE out (sub pre-out) on the back of the receiver.
  2. Buy a Y adapter (2 male, 1 female).
  3. Connect the female side of the Y adapter to the other end of the sub cable and insert the male sides of the Y adapter to the right and left inputs on the back of the subwoofer.
  4. Take the subwoofer away from the top of the cabinet and put it in the front corner about a foot away from the walls so that the rear port has some breathing room.
  5. Adjust the level on its back of the sub to around 60%-65%, no higher than 75%.
  6. Turn the crossover on the back of the sub all the way up to its maximum point. That will take it out of the equation. The crossovers must be set in the receiver.
  7. Inside the receiver's menu, set all your speakers to SMALL by adjusting their crossovers. Do not set them to full band.
  8. In the receiver's menu, set the subwoofer to YES.
  9. In the receiver's menu, adjust the gain levels for all the speakers and subwoofer to their default values.
  10. If the receiver offers the option of setting the high pass filters (crossovers) of the individual speakers, set them to about 10Hz to 20Hz higher than the minimum low frequency extension of your speakers. Check the manual of your speakers or check the manufacturer's website.
  11. If your receiver offers only one crossover setting for all the speakers, set it to 80Hz to 100Hz. Experiment with both and see which one is better.
  12. If the receiver offers an option for setting the low pass filter (LPF) of LFE separately, set it to 120Hz.
  13. Run the calibration program inside the receiver and make sure that all the speakers and subwoofer have the same level.
If your subwoofer is not defective, it should sound fine for all your HT applications. We have many people on this forum who are extremely satisfied with the performance of their subwoofers.

If the subwoofer is defective, no adjustments in the receiver will fix the problem. Contact the company and have them repair or replace your subwoofer.

What is the crossover for your fronts? My 606 had set my fronts to "Full", and I changed it to 80hz. I increased the LFE in the receiver's menu from 100hz to 120hz, and have the gain in the sub at 65% with the crossover knob to its max. (EDIT) BD took care of it^^^.

Big Daddy I noticed that in the receiver's menu (Onkyo 606) the gain for the speakers are set to a negative number. Can you please explain the benefits of setting them to zero? What does a (-) setting for the gain level mean? Thanks a lot!

[*]Connect a sub cable to the receiver's LFE out (sub pre-out) on the back of the receiver.
-Done

[*]Buy a Y adapter (2 male, 1 female).
-Done. I'm using the adapter and cable they sent.

[*]Connect the female side of the Y adapter to the other end of the sub cable and insert the male sides of the Y adapter to the right and left inputs on the back of the subwoofer.
-Done.

[*]Take the subwoofer away from the top of the cabinet and put it in the front corner about a foot away from the walls so that the rear port has some breathing room.
-About 18-24" from the wall directly behind it and 12" fromthe left side of the sub is the other wall.

[*]Adjust the level on its back of the sub to around 60%-65%, no higher than 75%.
-Currently set at 50%

[*]Turn the crossover on the back of the sub all the way up to its maximum point. That will take it out of the equation. The crossovers must be set in the receiver.
-Set to 130hz (max)

[*]Inside the receiver's menu, set all your speakers to SMALL by adjusting their crossovers. Do not set them to full band.
-I only have crossover points. Currently set to 80hz

[*]In the receiver's menu, set the subwoofer to YES.
-Done. The sub would not work otherwise

[*]In the receiver's menu, adjust the gain levels for all the speakers and subwoofer to zero.
-All flat lined for all speakers

[*]If the receiver offers the option of setting the high pass filters (crossovers) of the individual speakers, set them to about 10Hz to 20Hz higher than the minimum low frequency extension of your speakers. Check the manual of your speakers or check the manufacturer's website.
-Currently set to 80hz. Will change to 60hz to follow what the article says

[*]If your receiver offers only one crossover setting for all the speakers, set it to 80Hz to 100Hz. Experiment with both and see which one is better.
-N/A

[*]If the receiver offers an option for setting the low pass filter (LPF) of LFE separately, set it to
120Hz.
-Sounds like crap but I will try it.

[*]Run the calibration program inside the receiver and make sure that all the speakers and subwoofer have the same level.
-Have no idea on how to do that. I'll read the manual again.

I meant to set them to default values and let the calibration program take care of the gains later. On many receiver's, zero is the default. If the 606 has a different default, set it to that.

Different speakers interact with the room boundaries differently. Even identical speakers may have different levels depending on their location in the room. The gain levels are there to adjust the level of all the speakers so that they all have the same level at the main listening area.
