If anything, I'd blame FIREFLY for its infection into the sci-fi genre.

I mean, it's a conscious choice that they commit to 100%. You either like it or you don't. You don't, and that's fine. I don't think it hurts the show, but I can see how someone would be like "Um, what?"

And yeah, nobody wants to watch ATTACK OF THE CLONES. That was mean of me.

Another thought on CAPRICA: I can see why a lot of people didn't like it if they were expecting BSG. It's almost antagonistically different in almost every way. I also think it has legitimate failings if you can get over the whole "it's a family drama instead of an action show" bit, so it's a mixed bag overall.

I don't really distinguish filmmaking styles as associated with any particular genre. So yeah, Firefly could be partly to blame as well. But it goes back further than that. I think the blame (or praise, depending on your point of view) could go all the way back to Woody Allen's Husbands and Wives, which is the first film I can remember seeing that intentially used this pseudo-verite technique in such an obvious manner.

I hate it. It's one thing if you are shooting on a quick schedule with a small crew and low budget and have to steal shots...which is how "verite" was born. Quite another when you are trying to look like crap on purpose.

And before anyone jumps in a says, "but but look at The French Connection!" I'd say that even though Freidkin was conciously trying to channel a new wave sensibility, he was still dealing with having to shoot quickly on a modest budget, and lots of shots in that film are actually stolen. And even then, that film isn't a tenth of the mess that we are seeing nowadays.

I am quite aware of cinema verite. This is not it. This is someone consciously waving the camera around like an epileptic when they don't have to. It's a camera crew who is 1) jumping on a fad that was well played out years before this series even aired on shows like NYPD Blue and Homicide: Life On The Street (which both are mostly to blame for the whole fake-verite movement), and 2) not having to do the work of competent craftsmen with actual camera setups and tracking shots.

IMO
Roger Moore has explained the camera work. They wanted it to feel like the camera's were attached to ships in battle or being held by someone. They didnt want it to feel like the camera was set on a stand or staged. They wanted a documentary approach. I think its great and works for the series. To each their own.

Yep! Just goes to show:

You can please all of the people, some of the time OR
You can please some of the people, all of the time

Never both!

I ordered the UK set, and it is being shipped by Deutsche Post DHL. It has my delivery estimate as February 5th. Has anyone had experience with this particular carrier and how long it actually took to get your package? Just trying to get an accurate idea of expectations.

Thanks!

I have the complete series on Blu-ray, including The Plan & Razor. I also have Caprica digitally.

I just picked BSG:B&C today.

I haven't seen any of it, except for the BSG pilot, which I loved, except the shakycam.

Suggestions on the best order to watch? Simply in order of production?

Miniseries, season one, season two, season three, Razor, season four, The Plan, and Blood and Chrome.

You're going to have to get used to the shaky cam. It's intentionally cinéma vérité, afterall.

Right right. Will the miniseries be obvious to be played first or do I have to poke around to find it in the Season 1 set?

I'm just oozing with excitement that I haven't seen this awesome series yet...

Ok great. I think that's the one that starts with the meeting between humans and Cylons, with the introduction of that female character. Right.

Can't wait.

Yes. That's the beginning of the miniseries.

"Radiological alert!"
"Galactica, I got one, but the other is inbound to you."
"Brace for impact!"

"We need some bullets so we can get into this shooting war."

Good to hear. Just got my UK set in today and have only watched half of season one previously. Your comments just make me more motivated to watch this.

Nice price! Always put my entry into owning the whole series (given my love-hate relationship with it), at $50.

That seals it for me. I will be waiting for The Walking Dead to finish and drop super-low before I buy it. I paid like $135 for BSG complete (no regrets), but I've seen way too many awesome grabs on it in the past few months.

I'm going to be much more patient on TV series in the future for the very few I am interested in owning.
