That's an awkward translation fo the Criterion edition. I wonder how many other ones stand-out. I don't understand why they had to have a new translation for a brand new film anyway. Unless they couldn't obtain the rights to it, they should have just kept the theatrical one, which was excellent.

There's a possibility that the translation was corrected and made more accurate. I've seen a difference in subtitles for the same movie. One that comes to mind is Rambo First Blood. The HD DVD has English subtitles, but the subtitles were updated and made better for the Blu-Ray release.

According to someone in the film thread, the original is the literal translation. Even just going assuming there was no perfect translation, the original is so much more elegant and fitting, compared to the Criterion translation, which sounds like it was translated by a robot.

I don't know anything about Portrait of a Lady on Fire. I've never seen the movie. I was simply providing some information in relation to subtitles that I have personal knowledge of. I am hearing impaired, so I use the English subtitles for everything I watch. And I know that subtitles are not identical for every release of the film.

There was talk well before the Criterion release that the translation of the film were awkward and sometimes off. (A friend of mine, who speaks French, made this remark at the premiere I attended.) So the new translation makes sense, at least from the murmurings I've gathered. Whether they're accurate in this translation, I have no idea.

There's no way "But I also felt I missed you" is more fitting/accurate than "But I also felt your absence". I also felt I missed you?? No one phrases things like that, sorry. Do you believe in this instance that Criterion's translation is actually less awkward?

That doesn't really invalidate what I said. (Frankly, both lines settle in the same manner for me.) I get the logic for why they did it, whatever warts that may have come about in this transition.

I mean, we're basing this on one example, and in that one example, the Criterion translation is both awkward, and ill-fitting, It's obviously impossible to make any generalizations of the entire translation based on that, but at least in this instance, I'd take the theatrical translation any day over this new Criterion one. You also can't say that your friend wouldn't find just as many issues with this new translation as he/she apparently did with the theatrical one.

That line just doesn't work in English... hopefully it's just one line.

(As someone who has professionally corrected subtitle translations for Blu-ray, that's the thing you want to avoid. You want to strike a balance between a literal translation, as well as something that someone would say in the language it is being translated into. I've seen both extremes, and boy can they be awful...)

Sciamma could have asked for it to be changed for all we know. Hopefully we’ll get clarification about it from someone involved

Off-topic, but I remember one time that I tried watching an anime with the dubbed English soundtrack AND the English subtitles, and the two translations were wildly different, not even close, really.

[Show spoiler]Blu-ray Debut: June 2006
HD DVD vs Blu-ray Ended: February 2008
First Criterion Blu-ray: December 2008

Criterion released their first Blu-ray 2.5 years after the introduction of Blu-ray and 10 months after the end of the format war.

UHD Blu-ray Debut: February 2016

It has been over 4 years and we still haven't seen UHD Blu-rays from Criterion.

More facts:

DVD Debut: 1997
DVD Peak: 2005 @ $16.3B
DVD 2018: $2.2B

BD Debut: 2006
BD Peak: 2013 @ $2.37B
BD 2018: $1.8B

UHD BD Debut: 2016
UHD 2017 Growth: 187%
UHD 2018 Growth: 70%
UHD 2019 Growth: 15%
UHD 2019: $300M
UHD Peak: ~2022

Notice the trend here. UHD BD will peak far below a billion dollars, it won't come close to even the heights of regular Blu-ray. UHD BD will be the last physical format. Any future improvement to video standards will be restricted to digital streaming.

Now, of course, it's entirely possible that Criterion will release occasional one-off UHDs here and there but it will never be a normal release for them and, IMO, it's totally understandable. The boutique labels that have released UHD BDs must be selling a very small amount of them that, even if profitable, might not be worth the effort for everyone

I got mine from zoom over here in the uk. It is diabolical. The thing was crushed upon arrival. I contacted them & they sent me a replacement that I will never open. Just use the one I have open

Good idea in theory, but hopeless in reality

You'd have to have incredible Internet. The infrastructure just isn't there yet.

When that day strikes (And the day when Blu-rays and 4K UHD discs stop selling), it will be a sad day for Blu-ray.com people (Maybe most. Some don't mind digital).
