**** Criterion is weak. Is that their thing now, let another label release a 4k disc then release the same movie on BD? I might put my Arrow Crash next to my Studio Canal Elephant Man.

Fingers crossed Criterion has a Big Trouble in Little China BD planned.

Great month. In for all of them especially Amores Perros. Gonna skip Crash though as I will opt for the UK 4K Arrow release instead.

Doubt it. This already has two previous BD releases, both excellent.

The movie is more than worthy of Criterion, but everyone who wants it has already bought it (sometimes twice).

LOL, I was just kidding, because a Criterion release would (theoretically) mean a different label releasing a UHD.

I'm in for the William Greaves film(s). Like but don't love the others. As tempted as I am to wait for this release of Crash (and love the cover art). I'll buy the 4K Arrow version.

A lot of Spanish labels like Resen are not legit, so this release is questionable.

Love the cover for Amores perros. I'm still processing on Crash.

Page 10,000 just 10,000 more to match the Friday the 13th Thread.

I think I'll have to go with the 4K Arrow release for Crash.

Still need to check out Bresson, he's one of those directors that has slipped past my radar. Is Mouchette a good one to start with?

Did I miss the actual announcement post? It seems everyone just suddenly started talking about Crash. (Cronenberg's version, I hope!)

Reality check: A 4K release from another region is barely going to affect Criterion's business or bottom line. 99% of potential customers will not care.

Would it be nice for Criterion to get into the 4K game? Sure. But they're going to do that at their own time and pace, and not a single second before, just like they did with Blu-ray.

There was about a 2.5 year gap between the first Blu-ray and Criterion's entry. Dec will be 4.5 years for UHD. Arrow, Shout and Kino, the other major boutique labels, have started to release on the format. There's no reason to withhold discussion of this more-and-more conspicuous situation.

Here are some other boutique labels that haven't released 4K discs yet: BFI, Eureka, and Artificial Eye. Criterion isn't exactly alone.

Who said anything about "withholding discussion"?

I can write a long post speculating why Criterion hasn't gone 4K yet, but it would be just that - speculation - so I won't bother because i don't actually know why.

Criterion is a niche label... And that niche is the die hard collector who is most likely to have 4K, it will affect their sales... But I wouldn't say 99% don't care, it's more likely 50 - 60%.

I know for me, I've skipped a lot of the recent Criterion catalog releases that were from MGM and sourced from 4K. (Princess Bride, Great Escape etc...)

Once I hear if the BD included with Arrow's 4K release of Crash is region free (obviously the 4K disc is), I'll make my purchase decision, but it's very likely I will not be buying Criterion's release... I'm not even sure if I'll buy Parasite at this point, since Universal released the 4K disc already.

I might buy The Irishman, but even on the fence about that.

Eh, I already own the UK Mouchette and Amores Perros, and I might end up buying the Arrow Crash instead. Still, I'm sure these announcements made a lot of people happy.

I thought it was unfair to Criterion to bring up imports. But yes this is worth mentioning.

I wish Criterion was doing 4K, too, as I'm sick of double-dipping. I have double dipped so many DVD titles that Criterion later upgraded to Blu, and I definitely don't want to have to do that all over again once/if Criterion starts upgrading their Blu's to 4K.

It makes me hesitant to buy a lot of Criterion Blus right now at all, because of the possibility they'll upgrade later. That's not good if I'm afraid to buy their upcoming Blu's at all. I call it the Blue Underground Syndrome.

And I don't expect Criterion or any label to release "everything" they put out in 4K, but we're getting some pretty BIG titles like "Crash" that deserve 4K and are getting it elsewhere. Makes no sense.
