Star Trek: Original Movies Individual Releases 4K Only (Sep 14)

JB Hi-Fi are listing the individual releases of the first six Star Trek movies, including the new "TMP: Director's Edition", for release on September 14, but they're 4K only.

Not surprising. Considering the previous release of the first four films was 4k only, I didn't really expect anything different. Hence, if you want all the supplements, import the U.S. editions with both the 4k and Blu-ray edition in one.

There will be a lot of Star Trek fans who already have the supplements on their existing Blu-ray releases

The 4K market is seeking those that will accept high prices for lessor products as compared to overseas versions,

Can’t see much of a rush for these….I won’t be wasting $ on this.

JB will have these in the 2for$40 4K which will stack with their 20/30% discount within a month so there’s no reason you’ll have to pay more than $15 each for these. That’s $90 for all six when currently the full movie set is $200 from the UK. The most I ever see UK 4Ks discounted is when Zaavi does 2for$50AUD.

Where are you ordering from that’s so damned cheap??

I have already pre-ordered the US version which comes with both 4K and standard Blu-ray.

I remember when Universal Sony released the 4K/Blu-ray combo release of "Star Trek Into Darkness" I was excited to get it because the US version included that second disc full of extras (featurettes, deleted scenes, gag reel, trailers) only to find out it wasn't included here.

When I enquired as to why, USHE said "We made a business decision not to include something that had been previously released."

Don't know how many times I tried to tell them that Australia never got that bonus disc; it was first included on the US "Star Trek: The Continuum" release which he never got, but they weren't listening.

Today i got an email from USHE and they told me they have no plans on releasing Blu-rays of these new "remastered in 4K" editions.

They stated while USA and the UK are releasing Blu-ray copies, they decided on a different strategy.

No real surprise, our market is so small that it's not worth the ROI. I just imported the individual 4K/BD releases and the box set of the first film. All of this was obvious when all the local listings went up with 4k-only discs.

Yeah, I was just thinking what "strategy" they're talking about; to encourage people to buy the overseas release.

1. Only releasing Lower Decks on DVD here.
2. Not including the bonus disc of extras for Into Darkness as "we made a business decision not to release something that had already previously been released." Even though you try to tell them that disc was included originally on a box set that was not released here.
3. Choosing to only release the original movies, including the new TMP: Director's Edition, on 4K.

While I was in my local JB store today, I had a look at the cover of TMP: Director's Edition 4K and it only features the ONE 4K disc. The bonus Blu-ray disc full of extras isn't included.

Yep, I'm pretty disappointed that the new bonus features are not included in this release.

It's very clear what "strategy" USHE were going with. Wonder if they knew by cutting out the Blu-rays, they were cutting out all those new and archival extras.

That's nice for them. I used to work in the industry and I certainly understand the reasons for these decisions. But that'll be a few lost sales from the many diehard Trek fans out there who'll import the overseas counterparts... At least half to three quarters of my regular movies purchases are overseas releases anyway and so that will again be the case here.

Took one look at the Australia versions of these and decided to get the imports. Other than having fancy slipcases and a blu-ray disc (with features) included, the Motion Picture has an all new 48 min documentary that is unmissable! Also never before seen costume tests, vfx tests and a handful of newly unearthed deleted scenes.

So disappointed that as usual, Australia is left with cheap crap.

I think it's because whereas overseas, distributors care about what they put out on the market, here the people involved couldn't care less.

Beyond Home Entertainment once told me "The quality of our work is dependent on the popularity of the title."

Via Vision's DVD releases of The Bill are just Shock's cheap ass work with new artwork, even though the declaration on the box says "Whilst every care has been taken to produce the highest quality DVD release..."

If all they've done is provide new artwork and that's it...

...also, as per the details on the box, its unclear whether the Directors Edition of Star Trek VI is included in the Australian release. If its not, thats such a shame.

Someone confirmed in another thread that the director's cut is included. Bizarre that it isn't on the packaging, though.

On the back of the international 6-Movie box set, it states "Packed with hours of special features, it is an essential STAR TREK collection for fans and beyond!"

Clearly USHE didn't think so.
