This might be an opening for Amazon Canada to take up some of the slack (like they did with the Batman vs. Robin Steelbook when Target Canada closed).

Such a sad day. It is always sad when another great Canadian iconic brand gets swallowed up by a US company. However, such a prominent Canadian iconic brand now being eliminated under the umbrella of a US company? It sickens me.

There's going to be a little bit of a traffic jam in the coming months.

Some Future Shop Canada exclusives will prolly end up at Best Buy Canada stores. However, Best Buy Canada has already announced its own exclusives for some movies, such as Fifty Shades of Grey and SpongeBob Out of Water. Will Best Buy Canada really carry multiple exclusives for certain movies? Time will tell.

What I heard is Future Shop is closing with just some stores expected to become Best Buy's. 1,500 people are expected to lose their jobs.

But...but...Mondo is based in the US, and they take their business to Canada.

Apparently on Mondo's twitter feed they mentioned they were opening up to an American retailer on their next Steelbook. So I guess its mostly likely BB will be that company.

I was talking about FutureShop. It was an iconic Canadian brand now being eliminated because a U.S. company decided to get rid of it. I'm curious how long it will take for Burger King to eliminate Tim Hortons... the quintessential Canadian brand! I guess that it will come down to how long it will take before Burger King fails in their plans to make it an 'iconic global brand' instead of just a Canadian brand.

I'm all for Mondo distributing across the entire globe. However, they need to take it upon themselves to find outlets through which to offer their products. FutureShop was purchased by a U.S. company and then wiped out of existence completely. Mondo still has a chance to thrive in various other economies. It's not exactly the same thing.

Well, you do realize that Future Shop's management sold the company willingly to Best Buy, right? The takeover wasn't done at gunpoint.

Indeed. I know how a business transaction works. I am always disgusted at the seller when a U.S. company buys a Canadian company. But, when that U.S. company then eradicates the Canadian brand, it's utterly revolting. FutureShop had a proud Canadian heritage behind it and a U.S. company just up and decided to excise it from our national cultural landscape. Why couldn't they have gone the other way? Why not turn all Best Buys into FutureShops across Canada? They could have had some semblance of respect for the cultural significance of the brand.

You're really overhyping the whole cultural significance thing. It's a ****ing electronic retailer shop, not some historical institution. Canada didn't make a heritage stamp of it did they? Also you said you understand how a business transaction works, but do you understand how a business works? Because it makes way more business sense to have all your stores under one name across the company when those stores are essentially redundant of one another. That strengthens the brand, and allows for more shared resources, marketing, etc..

I understand Petra's frustration, but as has been pointed out several times, many places had Best Buy and Future Shop stores within the same shopping mall. Furthermore, it's rare that a subsidiary has a brand that's worth more than the parent company's brand. Imagine the flip scenario, Best Buy rebranding everything as "Future Shop". It'd go out of business in America almost overnight.

But, they didn't need to rebrand anything in the U.S. I was specifically referring to rebranding the Best Buys IN CANADA to FutureShop. The U.S. Best Buys could stay the same. And, even with this approach, each would still have their separate home offices in each country and each would still collaborate in the same fashion. So, nothing would be different in that regards. However, they would have kept the cultural icon in tact.
