Thanks for your suggestions.

I already owned a few, and picked up a few more, especially since some were part of a 4x24€ offer (Secuestro, Toro, ...).

I would love to get Contratiempo, but sadly the film is (temporarily?) unavailable on Amazon.es.

Keep looking to see if it becomes available as Contratiempo is a great thriller with a nice twist ending.

I'm a fan of Salma Hayek and was searching for her drama Beatriz at Dinner. It came out without any extras and with lossy audio, but was not dropping below 24 dollars for over a year.
Then finally I could get it for slightly under 22 euros including shipping.
Once I got it, it turned out it was put on a BDR.
So it was expensive, barebones and came from an official studio/distributor from the states and yet I feel suckerpunched.

I like supporting studios, but if they want to survive they have to be there for the customer and as of lately it seems studios don't care much anymore.
Sony is the only one that does petitions on which movie should be released next, which gives a little hope for the small market physical media is becoming.

Two new ones of interest are Tales From The Crypt: Ritual and Cursed (which says it is in it's original aspect ratio).

These bootlegs are evidently done by the same company, but who are they? Why is Amazon selling bootlegs?

It's not like Amazon hasn't been told about it by customers, yet they still sell them.

These are "grey-area" releases in Spain. They are not official releases but, thanks to Spain's weird copyright laws, they are not bootlegs either. (at least, from what I've gathered)

If they were official releases, Cursed would probably be cropped to 1.78:1.

My understanding is that the copyright laws in Spain are such that this is technically legal. These companies are not hiding - some of them have social media pages and official offices and contact information. And these aren't 3rd-party sellers listing bootlegs on Amazon.es - Amazon.es is buying stock from these companies the way that Amazon.com buys stock from legit companies in the US.

It's still super shady and ethically unsound - but (again, to the best of my knowledge) the law in Spain allows this to occur.

Thanks.

I just read the thread and that was more or less the comment, too.

Buying pirated releases just doesn't feel right and I'd never buy one of them. I almost did buy The Wizard (1989) before the new HD Remaster release was published by Shout! Factory, but a user replied and said.. it was a bootleg.

Spain has bigger problems right now though this needs to be taken care of.

That's frustrating when it is one of your most sought after. Sony are usually on the money so far with their 4K releases but some recent stuff from the vault on blu ray is dire. Like Pacific Heights which is a great movie with a garbage transfer. I don't get too bothered with the legal issues around these Spanish bootlegs. If they are good quality i'm happy.

Of course, if the studios and rights-holders of these films made them available through legal channels, there wouldn't be a market for these bootlegs.

That's not really a reasonable legal standard, because there's no way to release EVERYTHING, and even releasing a large subset must be done over a considerable timeframe. If things are abandoned long enough, they enter public domain. The length of time before public domain status has been repeatedly lengthened to the point of ridiculousness now though, so I'd agree with that being shortened.

Purchased Scorsese's After Hours Blu-ray through Amazon a couple of months ago. Still waiting for that official release while settling for that bootleg. Picture quality seemed to be ok for what i sampled here and there.

Can anyone tell me if the Spanish Cursed blu-ray is a pressed disc? And if it really is 2.35:1? Any response appreciated.

Another very good question. There's a comparison here:

https://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=2253

The 97 minute running time on the back cover seems to indicate that it's the PG-13 cut but it would be great if it was the more explicit version. Any further response once again appreciated.

It’s showing up as a release on Blu-ray.com under Spain releases. It’s still bootleg right?
