If you're referring to the Best Buy steel coming at that time, it's most likely just a repack of the Disney discs in a new steelbook, probably to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the film. I'd be surprised if they even muster up an extra bonus disc/feature for this release (which would probably be a rehash of the Kevin Feige/Jon Favereau sit down that was posted a few days ago).

I'd love to be proven wrong, I've always advocated for the disc release of the IMAX versions but, thinking realistically, it'll be a cold night in hell when the boogeyman sleeps and Disney actually creates new discs for these films.

The “IMAX” version is not an original release format. It’s just open matte in some moments and cropped in others. It was not shot or designed for imax and merely retrofitted to seem like a switching aspect imax release later. If you’re into it cool. For me I just see that as a retrofitted version and prefer the original scope version.

I would say the sound engineers these days are being held back by power hungry filmmakers and bosses.

I believe you have more in-depth access than me but it would be foolish of me to compare the sound experience in Dolby Cinema Vs. my teeny time home. Of course, I can gauge certain aspects of the sound mix at the Cinema and find out if it sounds similar at home. For instance, Avatar Way of the Water sounded great in Dolby (minus the sparse use of heights) but the DD+ Atmos stream sounds just about ok possibly because the Cinema seats have butt-kickers.

Iron Man 1 Atmos is far from being called Atmoused. It has loads of movements and activity in the both front and rear height channels with ample mid bass.

I would certainly agree that Thor Ragnarok and Black Panther are Atmoused but someone here mentioned that is how the filmmaker's wanted which is weird.
I have the DTS mix at home also

Why is this sold out in 4K? I didn't see it mentioned that it's OOP or anything.

This and Iron Man 2 are two of the worst 4K upgrades in my view, yet they never get mentioned in the same breath as some of the other (fortunately rare) inferior 4K upgrades. It's like these get a free pass.

To be fair, did anyone expect any more out of Disney? The HDR grades (judging by seeing these on D+) are great and the Atmos tracks are good (maybe lacking a little power that the original DTS tracks had, as some have reported). I'm just thankful we didn't get PQ as bad as Curse of the Black Pearl and/or Atmouse mixes as bad as Thor Ragnarok and Black Panther.

Free pass? No, more like people are resigned to the fact that Disnee DNR’ed the shit out of most of these earlier MCU flicks on 4K so they have to make do, and the HDR on most of them is really rather nice and can be lauded as such whilst acknowledging the other shenanigans. I don’t do surround sound so Atmoused audio is neither here nor there for me, it doesn’t factor into it.

But hey, while people are b!tching about amzinging double standards we could just stick an IMAX label on Iron Man 1 and suddenly some folks would drool over it

Could you please elaborate on your DTS mix? Are you referring to the standard Blu-ray Iron Man or the 4K German Iron Man?

It's not cropped. IM was shot Super 35 so they've opened up the mattes at various points. It's all completely arbitrary of coursh, done years later, but hey: that's pretty much what any "IMAX" movie is these days, a marketing ploy tacked on after the fact that has zero artistic merit or value. The rare few that are genuinely shot on IMAX film and/or composed for 1.43 just serve to highlight how much of a sham the rest of them are. Even then, Nolan always frames his IMAX footage with a centre crop in mind so he can extract a useable 'scope or 2.20 frame from it, and in some cases you can end up with superior (IMO) shot composition on those cropped versions because the 1.43 is just too loose.

It's all a load of bollocks.

Seems like a lot of work to make an old film to be fake IMAX.
They framed the FX for open matte TV showings, and all directors worth their salt frame for both, at least McQ does and whilst Favs isn't on his level he shot safe.

As Mike said, the VFX on movies shot 2.35 flat/open matte is usually finished out to 1.78 or 2:1 just so’s they have room to reframe in post if necessary, and that work is then used to create a 16:9 friendly TV version. It’s not unusual. An open matte version was floating around on the interwebs for a few years before it got IMAXed.

Eh, it’s pretty much all fake as I said.

The expanded AR here does look gimmicky of the entire MCU. However few scenes do look good and impactful especially on my larger 77 OLED.

Entire? Some directors are better than others, and a lot know how to frame and use the format

When did I say Entire?

One scene that looks cool on expanded AR is Iron Man emerging out of the cave followed by the fight until he jets out. I would take a gimmicky expanded AR over DNR in the name of consistent digital look.

I always wonder how cool it would look on screen sizes larger than 77.
