Default Should I get a 2DS?

Is there a list of games that can't be played properly without the 3d? I don't really do handheld gaming anymore, but I would like to play the new Pokemon game and a few others. I've read the reviews, but was hoping to get some thoughts here. Is the cheaper price worth the loss of features?

Personally, I think the 2DS doesn't seem as good even if you only plan to play in 2D. The 3DS is fully capable of playing all games in 2D. Obviously, this is the same with the 2DS, which simply removes the 3D element altogether. There's a slider on the 3DS and you can set it to 'off' if you want to play in 2D.

The 2DS is bulkier and doesn't 'close' with a cover like the 3DS.

This makes it more prone to damage and dust, etc. If you want to carry it with you places I think it seems like a less good option. If, however, you plan to only use it at home and don't mind the style of the system then it's a decent deal.

I haven't used the 2DS, myself. I can't comment on any and all games for which 3D is "required."

The only one that I know of offhand is Super Mario 3D Land. And the 3D requirement is only a few occasions here and there.

There are a few spots where you go down a pipe into a little bonus area and you see test in the corner that says "3D". In one example of this, there is what appears to be a staircase of blocks behind you to climb. There stair case is in fact that, but when you switch to 3D mode, you see that what appears to be a block on the top of the stair case is in fact floating in the foreground and you have to jump from the stair/block pile to that block.

I suppose you could probably pull it off without the 3D, but I can see where it would be hard to figure out what to do if you aren't already familiar with it.

But otherwise the game can be played in 2D, and for most other games that I've played (which I admit is only a handful), the 3D is optional.

If you just want the cheapest way possible to play these games, and you don't care that the 2DS can't fold up like the previous DS/3DS models, it's not a bad way to go.

That being said, I just recently upgraded from the regular 3DS to a 3DS XL, and I'm LOVING the bigger screens! It just makes things easier to see. For instance, I downloaded Super Mario Bros. 2 for NES a while back from Nintendo's virtual console store. I found it difficult to play on the regular 3DS screen, but on the 3DS XL, it's much better.

My much younger sister will be inheriting my regular 3DS as she's been wanting one, and is fine with the one that I already had.

So, all of that said, I personally do recommend the 3DS XL for the bigger screens. I believe there will be some black friday deals coming up where you can get it for $150. But the 2DS still isn't a bad option. I think the 2DS screens are roughly the same size as the standard 3DS.

I bought the 2DS day it came out and love it.. Fits perfect in my hands and just love the feel of it.

I have pretty much every DS every made except a 3DS and honestly this one is my favorite. I wanted a bunch of 3DS games so this was a cheaper way to do that..

I did pre-order the New 3DS XL Zelda bundle so I might change my mind after I play the 3DS XL..

But the 2DS is a nice little handheld and I enjoy it very much.

Plus there are some Black Friday deals for $99 on it.. Great price for it..

People carry 7" and 10" Tablets around without issue. So I am sure the 2DS will be fine to carry around without issue. Take mine places in the little pouch they sell and I have had no issues. Lot of people wanting to try it out which I do not allow them to touch

Thanks for the responses everyone. I don't really care about it not folding shut. My primary concern is that there will be games that can't be played without the 3d. But, if this doesn't seem to be an issue, I may go for one on Black Friday.

A 3DS is only $30 more than a 2DS on Amazon, I think that's a fair amount to get the far and away superior device. If you're spending $140 anyway, another $30 shouldn't break the bank, and this way you don't have to worry about any kind of limitations. Personally I'd get the 3DS XL

By far and away superior device lol. I have not ran into any kind of limitations on mine. I just borrowed a 3DS and honestly I don't see how its that much superior. Unless you get the XL which has the bigger screen

Plus the 2DS can be had for $99 on Black Friday. Thats tough price to pass up.

Most people are knocking it without even trying like I did until I played one.

The 2DS:

Lacks 3D support
Has no Stereo speakers, only mono (stereo through headphones only )
Can't fold, and is thus less pocket-friendly/portable than the 3DS
Has no power savings mode
Weighs more, and has a larger footprint

I think the mono sound alone is a deal killer. I would hate to have a limitation like that. As this is also a portable device, I hate that the 2DS doesn't fold up. For me, the 3DS is far and away the superior device. Cheapness is all the system really has going for it, but as I said, if you're going to invest this much anyway, you might as well spend a little bit more for the complete package. There will be deals on the 3DS on BF too I'm sure. I think the 3DS XL will be $150 at Target for instance. I haven't looked into the deals that much however.

I thought that it's supposed to have a button or slider (similar to volume) that puts it into power save/ sleep mode since it doesn't have the option to be folded up while on like the other 3DS models.

You guys are making this decision hard.

At this point, I think I'm going to try to get the 2DS for $99 on BF. It doesn't bother me that the 2DS doesn't fold (neither does Sony's handhelds,) and I usually play with headphones or the volume off anyway. My only real concern is that the lack of 3d will preclude me from fully enjoying some titles. However, I'm not sure how much I'll use it (the only titles I'm interested in at this point are Pokemon and the upcoming Smash Bros. game,) so I want to get out of it for as cheap possible (I can always trade in the 2DS and upgrade later if I find myself using it a lot.)

Thanks for the input everyone!

I agree about no power savings mode that does suck. I bet 90% of people couldn't careless about the sound because most turn the sound way down or use head phones. It not folding is not a big deal. Most kids are carrying tablets around anyway. Lol weight? These things are light.
lack of 3D is not a deal breaker. 3D I bet most do not use anyway

its actually a nice handheld.

just get both like I am :-). I get them all anyway.

Got a 2DS for my B-day. First impressions are favorable; It's smaller than I thought it would be, but the control layout seems fine. I haven't played any games with it yet, though--I won't let myself until I'm done for the semester.

bumping an old thread but I just picked up a 2DS last month and I see no drawbacks to getting one if you're a casual gamer. One of my kids has a 3DS that I've played around with but it's glued to his hands basically. For $79 if you don't care about 3D I say go for it. I bought it just to play some Professor Layton games and other slower paced stuff. It actually fits better in my hands then the clam-shell.

Loving my 2DS so far, have 14 games for it, definitely taking it with me on my trip to Napa Valley on the weekend.

The 2DS is lieterally a 3DS Without the 3D. There is also no such thing as a "2DS game". They both play the exact same games, all of which are branded as 3DS games.
