yup, that is the theory and why they talk about moving away from a channel system to an object system (i.e. object X is meant to be at co-ordinates x/y/z in the room so how would you make the appearance with the persons set-up to be that it is at x/y/z.)

I havenít checked in here for awhile. In the interval, have any of the Atmos crusaders verbally committed to purchase all the equipment necessary in order to implement this new sound at home once it becomes available (without qualification) and promised to post some pics of their setup?

We need at least one common man (not some rich dude who buys a new toy every other year or so) to get the ball rolling by crossing the divide from theoretician talk to ownership talk regarding its real world benefits/disappointments.

Anyone pledged to do so?

In home we only have so many options as to where to put speakers so if we work with that and let the system do the rest we will get the best results available to a DIY set-up, without getting super extreme in calculating specific angles and deflections and so on and so on.
This feature is not yet available to most any Atmos capable processor yet (Steinway/Lyngdorf has their own proprietary "thing"), outside of a commercial setting.

Currently, you want to prescribe to the recommended home Atmos angle ranges for each speaker location. For the 9.1.x configurations follow the recommended placement angles for the front side surrounds as in the 9.1.2 layout schematic.

I'm still deciding which configuration to get next year. I'd love to have a 7.2.4, but realistically, think I will most likely get a 5.1.2, with integrated front and uprising speakers. The wires scared me.

No one is really in a position to commit to getting this format implemented in their theaters yet. If they have the money to put together a commercial format, perhaps; standards are too fluid. At this point, it's really at the level of slapping an "Atmos Ready" sticker on the front of a receiver.

With HDCP 2.2 not on these units, it doesn't make much sense to commit to getting an obsolescent receiver.

That's what I have been deciding, the thing is, the current Dolby ATMOS specification for home use is a specification created for Blu-ray's, which is fine if you have no intent to upgrade to 4K Blu-ray's, however, Dolby may create a 4K Blu-ray specification which is entirely different from the 1080p Blu-ray specification. Further to this DTS has still to announce it's DTS MDA for home use, if that was to happen it my have an entirely different layout and number of speakers, there may even be two specifications one for 1080p the other for 4K. My point here is what ever we both decide on could be useless once 4K is out. For that reason I am waiting until everything is set in stone.

Well when the devices do have HDCP 2.2, who will pledge to step up? Iím looking for only one audiophile (who isnít rich) willing to go on record and put his money where his mouth isÖ.like these celluloid, rather than sound, loving folks - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...of-analog-film

Dolby has stated that for the foreseeable future, their home Dolby Atmos format will not be changing as they are happy with the results (and it can already support 34.1 with these new and upcoming disc soundtracks). So, 4k Blu-ray will see the exact same codec on board. There is the feeling that any new 4k media will use the increase in storage space made available for the video data and not the audio.

DTS's upcoming immersive format is supposed to be layout agnostic with a re-mapping feature. Install speakers in an Auro configuration or Atmos configuration and you'll be fine.

Glad to know the layouts are agnostic, if only the audio would see a boost with the new discs. Maybe I just have a bad receiver or need an external amplifier or something, but, I can hardly tell a difference between Dolby 5.1, DTS 5.1 and Dolby TrueHD, DTS Master Audio.

Then something is wrong with your setup somewhere, or the speakers being used at home cannot resolve fine gradations in sound. I definitely can hear a difference between the lossy and lossless tracks.

Dolby Atmos is dramatically different than anything anyone has heard so far, especially with the right soundtracks.

You're comment fills me with hope. However, I must stress, I really hear no difference. I hope to have the situation solved when I upgrade to Dolby ATMOS. I think it's my speakers that are the problem.

Cheap ones Aego T. It was a 5.1 package that I bought in 2006/7 for about £500. I don't have any floor standing speakers there all bookshelves.

I would like a book that explains everything, but I can't find any. What specification is perfect?

I am upgrading my theater for ATMOS. I needed two new amps (already ordered) and two additional sets of surrounds (one purchased and still looking for the second set) and a new surround processor. I do have some retrofit work to do to the room so I am waiting for the demo/construction to be complete before I get the surround processor - that will possibly allow me to get one with DTS:X in it just so I am not painted into a corner.

I will be putting up photos of the process when I start working on it.

I don't know if I count as a common man you are asking for, given that I also have 10 D-BOX chairs in my house (8 in the theater, one in the game room and one in the living room). I don't want to sidetrack the convo back to D-BOX, but I seriously doubt it would get its own thread on this site. I do know many people who have systems and I bought my first one back in 2002 and am not tired of it. I do look forward to experiencing D-BOX with ATMOS on some movies in the future and expect them to complement each other well.

DTS: X will work with Atmos speaker locations, so you should be good to go. Auro3D will not. Expect a September/October time frame for Atmos/X capable products and a little later in the year for the more high end stuff.

You are a common man , if you are not getting a deal (perk) from one of the manufacturers in order (implied or otherwise) to promote their product on your website or blog.

What speaker layout do you plan to use? If you go with height (ceiling) speakers which speaker do you plan to use?

MY current setup is a 7.1 system and I plan to do a 7.2.4 system (TF and TR).

I picked up another pair of Genesis 6.1sr surrounds for my front wide speakers. I have not yet picked out the ceiling speakers. I am considering just taking some ceiling speakers and replacing the drivers with Genesis drivers and bypassing their crossover to use an outboard multichannel external crossover. Would be cheaper and easier than trying to get 2 more pairs of Genesis 6.1sr and figuring out how to ceiling mount them.

I do also have a Phase Technology dARTS system and I might consider just putting a second system in with an amp and 6 speakers (2 wide and 4 ceiling) and using the Phase Tech for ATMOS content. While expensive, it still might be cheaper and might sound almost as good.
