I know a lot of users here are Twilight Time fans, so I just wanted to give everyone a heads up that SAE does not appear to be customs friendly anymore . . . I've made 6 orders from them in the past, most of them quite large orders, and they've always put a much lower $ amount on the shipping label so I've never gotten hit by customs. On my order of three movies from the last 15-for-$15 sale, I noticed that the amount declared on the label was much higher than usual, but there were no customs fees so I didn't worry about it. This time, however, I ordered 9 movies--my largest SAE order yet--and I found out today it accrued a $29CAD fee I don't have it in-hand yet so I don't know the exact dollar amount they put on the label, but the order was only worth $155CAD before shipping costs so even if they did under-declare it, it must still have been pretty accurate. I'm most frustrated by this because I always send my Kino orders to a PO box to avoid customs fees, since they do declare accurately, but since SAE has always been customs friendly I just send the packages to my house. I guess those days are over

To be safe when ordering large orders I personally would split the order, I normally order 4-5 at a time. Six was the most at one time and it was Customs friendly, but I think you're pushing it when orders and Boxes are larger.

That is a fair point! With any other retailer, I always follow that policy, but it's difficult with SAE because their system, with a flat rate per order and a slight increase per item, means the average shipping cost goes down the bigger your order is. It was too tempting to just accept the discount and hope for the best, haha. I did overspend this time, I would never normally order so many at once, so from now on I'll just keep the numbers lower and hopefully this doesn't happen again.

Edit: I have the box now and the amount listed on the label is exactly what I paid for it. Maybe it does have something to do with the size of the order--the box is definitely bigger than usual--but given their history I still would have expected at least some markdown on the amount. My biggest order before this was 7 movies, and they cost only 10USD less than these, but that label was customs friendly. In any case, I'm happy to have my movies, but I'll definitely be more careful with my SAE ordering from now on--no more oversized orders

Posted this on the 3D forum, but it may be of use here as well:

So I'm happy to confirm that my Filmarena 3D copy of INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE arrived last week and confirmed last night that it has the English bubbles (as previously reported).

While the FilmArena prices are very reasonable ($37 CDN for the 3D SteelBook) shipping is almost the same price as the item.

Having said that, I wanted to re-iterate that the shipping is very fast (5 business days from Czech to Canada door-to-door) and the packaging is exceptional as evidenced from the attached photos.

I will be using FilmArena again!

I don't mind paying a bit more for shipping if I see results in what I'm paying for.

that packaging is dif from last time i ordered from them a couple years ago. back then they would wrap the steelbook in an inch or two of bubble wrap then put it a box then wrap it in another inch of bubble wrap and them put a baggy over top of that with the shipping label. could have dropped it out of a plane and it probably would still be ok.

if you buy several items from Film Arena does the shipping become more reasonable?

So I just checked my history.

Two weeks ago, I ordered one SteelBook (3D SPIDER-VERSE) and paid 815 CZK (currently $47.97 CDN) for shipping.

In October 2018, I ordered two SteelBooks (ALIENS and 3D VENOM) and paid 913 CZK ($53.75 CDN) for total shipping.

My order before that was seven years ago in 2012. I ordered two SteelBooks (APOLLO 13 and 3D HUGO) and paid 404 CZK ($23.78 CDN) total for shipping.

Yes, shipping is expensive, but the item costs were not unreasonable ($37.08 CDN for 3D SPIDER-VERSE SteelBook). Also, these were items which were not available anywhere else.

I was considering getting the 3D Amaray from JB-HiFi in Australia, but the disc was the same price as the SteelBook, and shipping was $30.00 anyway. I figured I would pay $15 more and get what I really wanted. Of course this is highly subjective.

I am still waiting for their SteelBook release of ALIEN (1979). It looks amazing. I was going to wait and tack it on with SPIDER-VERSE, but I was afraid SPIDER-VERSE would sell out before ALIEN would go live.

It feels like everything over $20 is getting dinged by customs fees in the last couple of weeks.

excluding shipments from Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble right? Because they charge "tax" or "import fees" on checkout to avoid such things...

Am expecting 2 packages in the mail from the US now...

Haven't had this issue, though my shipments have been coming from the UK, not the US. Maybe they're trying to get as much as they can before USMCA is ratified and it gets bumped to $40.

Yeah you don't have to worry about Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

But for me I had a $25 and $40 order get dinged and I just had a $60 package that was just released from customs that will get dinged. Also had a $125 Ebay order from 2 weeks ago get dinged (that one was expected though).

And my Severin order will get dinged as well (which I accounted for when ordering) but I wish customs would just release the package already.

Yeah all my stuff has been coming from the US but I do have like 14 packages coming from the UK because Zavvi insists on shipping everything separately, but that is better for customs I guess.
