It would be then ninth version of that update's incarnation, in this case 1131. It's quite possible that the other eight weren't even released on-line. It just depends on how Samsung label things.

So then it's possible I am NOT running the most up-to-date version -- if I'm not seeing the ".9."

Chip:

Can you explain why the Samsung "splash screen" -- which indicates "HDMI 2: BLU-RAY PLAYER...Check Device to Power On" when the Blu-ray player isn't on -- is ONLY appearing on the HDMI 2 input? My cable box, which is in HDMI 1, DOESN'T trip this screen to come on when the box is off -- in fact, NOTHING happens when the cable box is off for that input, save for when I first turn the TV on (when I turn the display on, I get the white box up top that says "HDMI 1: CABLE BOX" and the incoming resolution info ("1080i/60" even when the box is off) prior to me turning the power on to the box...

Why do I only get that "splash screen" on the HDMI 2 input?

It would be most unlikely. If you try to run the update again, it will say you're up-to-date.

Have you tried disconnecting the devices and trying the different sources without them plugged in as well as trying them in different inputs? As we said if all your inputs aren't behaving the same, I'd suggest there's a fault with the HDMI board.

Indeed; they confirmed that the decimal point wouldn't show up on the TV screen when checking the latest version.

*Sigh* I haven't, Chip...I was attempting to try everything before I have to go to the back of the damn entertainment center and begin yanking cables out...I didn't think I'd need to go through this purchasing a brand new display.

So far, HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 are behaving very differently -- the HDMI 1 port, where the cable box is plugged into, DOESN'T display the "splash screen" (with the moving "objects" on the blue screen that displays the input source; I can't even FIND a Google image to show you...it's like this only applies to my TV) -- only the BD PLAYER input (HDMI 2) does when I shut the player off. This whole thing is driving me nuts, as I even tried what Samsung chat suggested yesterday -- unplug the TV and wait 30 seconds before plugging it back in, which was supposed to "erase the TV's quirks and bugs."

It didn't.

It's possible your cable box continuously sends out a signal to your television even when the cable box is turned off.

I have a Verizon FIOS cable box hooked up to my receiver. When I turn off the cable box while leaving my receiver and television on, my television shows a screensaver type thing with the name Verizon floating around and there is text which says something like "Press Menu to watch television".

This might be the reason your cable box is making your HDMI Input on your television act funny.

Although, I believe you said this did not happen with your old television.

Hopefully it's something simple like what I said about my own cable box.

I know you don't want to but it looks like you're going to have to pull your TV out of the entertainment center. Doing so should give you the answers you need. Not discrediting chip75 with that last sentence, of course. He really knows his stuff.

I think we've speculated that IntelliVolume's cable box might be similar, that it's always sending something to the TV. So unplugging the HDMI leads and/or trying them in different inputs will confirm those suspicions.

Disconnecting the cable box's power cord might offer some insight too, unplug it and try the HDMI input to see if it's still giving out information.

Did you check to see if the cable box has a quick start function?

This is what Chip and I had been discussing some posts up; it's the only thing I can think of that makes the input resolution stay always on "1080i/60" on the television -- and the same thing happened with my previous Sony.

It could very well be -- but beyond the resolution remaining on the screen when my box is off, I also have the problem of the two HDMI ports I'm using -- HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 -- behaving differently, and apparently for no reason...

Here's the situation (and this continues to occur even after loading the latest firmware and doing a hard reset of the TV by unplugging it, which was suggested to me by a Samsung chat rep last night):

My cable box is plugged into HDMI 1, and my Blu-ray player (running through an Onkyo receiver) into HDMI 2. That's it for connections to the Samsung. Now, when I first turn the TV on, and it's set to the Cable Box input, I get the white bar that pops up on the top of the screen that indicates "HDMI 1: CABLE BOX - 1080/60i" and this disappears after a few seconds before I even turn the box on. When I turn it on, I can use the box normally. When powering OFF the box, I get NO other kind of screen saver from the TV or any kind of messaging about resolution or input....BUT....

When I use HDMI 2, which is the Blu-ray player port, things behave differently -- as soon as I switch to that input (with the BD player and receiver turned OFF) through the Samsung, the screen turns blue with that "moving splash graphic" on it (as I said to Chip, I can't even FIND a Google image of this to show you guys what this looks like) and it says "Blu-ray Player" in the center. After a couple of seconds, the screen becomes dimmer, as if its adjusting for the Movie mode settings I have the Blu-ray player adjusted to, and then I get a whole message saying "Check Device Power" and an option to turn the home theater devices on by clicking on the "Power On" button on the screen (even though I don't have any HDMI-CEC settings set on anywhere).

I override this by turning on my receiver and then Blu-ray player separately, which eventually gets me to the player's startup screen (the Oppo/BD logos) and then I can watch discs. However, when a disc is finished and I'm ready to power down, after I shut off my receiver and player the TV displays this "spinning circle" in the middle of the blue splash screen (which DIDN'T happen prior to me installing the new firmware) and then, again, I get the "Check Device Power" message...

Here's what's even weirder: The cable box (HDMI 1) DOES NOT do this -- I don't get the splash screen with this "Check Device Power" message or any of that...but I DO get the white bar on top that displays resolution information and input name (which DOESN'T happen on the HDMI 2 BD player input)...

Quote:

No, I believe it DID happen with my old television...which is what's leading me to believe it's something funky going on with my somewhat outdated HD cable box...

Quote:

As I had said, Chip had suggested to me that it may be the box staying in some kind of "quick startup mode" -- but I looked everywhere in the box's menus and can't find anything that controls this.

What do you mean I'm going to have to pull it out of the wall unit...to check for what?

Appreciate your assistance along with Chip's!

I will try disconnecting the cable box's power cord and checking the resolution information on the TV -- though none of this explains the behavior of HDMI 2, which gives that "splash screen" when a device isn't turned on (this DOESN'T happen with HDMI 1).

I looked to see if the box had a quick start function, yes, and couldn't find anything.

I read back a bit more and saw you guys have been talking about it. My bad.

I meant you could pull the TV out and swap around the HDMI cable inputs to see if the same bahaviour happens. That may tell you whether your HDMI board has issues. If you have access to the back of the TV without having to pull it out of the entertainment center, that works, too.

Is there anything else you can shed light on with regard to the symptoms I described with the way the HDMI ports are behaving?

Specifically:

My cable box is plugged into HDMI 1, and my Blu-ray player (running through an Onkyo receiver) into HDMI 2. That's it for connections to the Samsung. Now, when I first turn the TV on, and it's set to the Cable Box input, I get the white bar that pops up on the top of the screen that indicates "HDMI 1: CABLE BOX - 1080/60i" and this disappears after a few seconds before I even turn the box on. Is the "HDMI 1: CABLE BOX - 1080/60i" the SOURCE name (if you change the resolution to 720p would it go to HDMI 1: CABLE BOX - 720/60p?

I have no idea what is causing that behaviour. The only thing I can suggest is to remove all your components from your TV. Test each component one at a time in each input and note down everything you see. Do not connect both components when doing this. Just do them one at a time.

It will probably save you a lot of stress if you can do this.

I never checked with lower resolution cable box settings -- I can do that, if that's what you're suggesting Chip...

You never saw that blue "splash screen" on any of your Samsung displays when connected components aren't powered on?

Of course; I will try that and report back...

But, still, that doesn't explain why I'm not getting that weird "blue splash screen" on HDMI 1, but I am on HDMI 2 when I turn my BD player off...
