I have a lot of movies that I have purchased through VUDU, iTunes and DMA. Yes the convenience is great, but the quality is not the same as the equivalent disc. I think it is risky to stake your collection on the availability of these services. What happens should the day come that these services close down? Are you going to get your money back for what you paid for now that you can no longer access it? However unlikely it is that these services will end, I would be very angry if suddenly all my purchases were gone.

1080P is just a video format, one can easily transfer a really bad VHS tape to 1080P with the right hardware and software. Being in 1080P or 2160P in and of itself guarantees nothing.

Dolby Digital 5.1 is just a audio format, one can easily transfer a really bad mono track to DD with the right hardware and software. Being in Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital + in and of itself guarantees nothing.

This is simply a case were the original Dolby Stereo tracks were paned to almost mono and released on BD and digital. The same happened with the Emerald Forest.

All speculation on my part. I would say the Mediumrare (UK) version came from the same Apple ProRes (or whatever distribution format Universal Pictures used) as the Shout Factory (US) version. Same for the digital version as far as the source is concerned.

That's fair enough Wendell. I don't have this particular Blu-ray so I couldn't tell you anything about it I'm afraid.

I seem to have, sort of, woke up that dormant Emerald Forest thread. I blame you, Wendell!

In the US we get quite a bit of UK programming via WGBH/PBS. Right now I am enjoying Endeavour V, some of my past favorites were Are you Being Served, Faulty Towers, Inspector Morse, Downton Abbey, Mr. Selfridge, Victoria, etc. Do you all in the UK have access to these and if so, how?

In the US, PBS distributes programming to affiliates via satellite. I have a 1M dish with three satellite STB’s and a pro tuner card in a PC. I do this because here the affiliates run several sub programs along with their main program and at 9 to 10 Mbps MPEG-2 looks pretty bad plus I hate their big, ugly bugs. The HD feeds from PBS are MPEG-4 at 13 Mbps and look pretty good for most content.

Well what are we going to do when physical media is dead? Won't be a need for sites like this so where will all the streamers post then ? Gone too will be all dem cheap UV/MA codes so all dem streamers will have to pay big bucks for dem movies .

BBC, ITV, and Channel 4 are three of the main broadcasters in the UK which will have shown the programmes you mention, but generally speaking, re-runs are shown on alternate channels. For example, Are You Being Served and Fawlty Towers were BBC programmes, so even though they will occasionally show up on one of the BBC channels, they are normally re-run on a channel called 'Gold' (originally 'UK Gold'), which handles all the old BBC stuff.

Other programmes such as Downton Abbey and Inspector Morse were broadcast on ITV, and they are re-run on their own set of channels (ITV 2, 3, 4). ITV-4 in particular repeats programming from the 1970's and 80's and a great channel for a bit of nostalgia.

I have a satellite set up for picking up all the above channels, plus channels which I pay a subscription for, such as the sports package.

If these dire and perennial predictions were to come true now, I estimate I would save about $500 per month on average. The question for me is what would I do with that money?

I sure won't be buying digital copies. If I have to use the internet to access movies, I will, , but I won't be paying for anything more than the internet service itself.

I suspeck many of dem bargun luving code junkies will seddle for subparscription streaming as cheapness followed by convenience are their top two priorities.

Subparscription streaming! I made up a new wurd!

You are all welcome to use my humble contribution to our shared lexicon.

I’m hoping disc dies with me, reaching its last breath as I do in perfect sync. It’s the only way.

Well thankfully Steedeel is a few years younger than me. So in theory, if all goes well with my life, I should have plenty more years in which to enjoy my disc collection.....and continue to add to it.

Sometime in the near future I am going to look into adding Britbox to my Amazon Prime. If they offer things like Keeping Up Appearances, Benny Hill, etc. it would be worth it.

I'd love to see Benny Hill getting repeated, but it appears he has fallen victim to the politically correct brigade. During the 70's and 80's his shows were very popular here in the UK, and thankfully many of them are available on DVD.

I've never really looked into Amazon Prime (UK) to be honest, but I know it does contain lots of recent television programmes for streaming - maybe not so much of the older shows. Britbox sounds ideal if you enjoy British TV.

All you guys are Drama Queens, nobody knows exactly when things die. Do you want to know when you die, I don't. One day you're there, the next day you are gone. It just happens fast, especially with Technology, but like I said it's all Digital now. Movies have been available Digital since DVD, the only thing is the Access. Disc is just a Storage Device, put it on a Server and you have the same thing. How about, Discs will Phase Out!

Yeah thanks Alchav. I didn’t know life is fragile and any one of us could be dead at any time. Thanks for that, it’s come as s massive shock but I feel it is something that you had to do. I feel truly enlightened.
