Good price on entry-level speakers, and they will do fine to get the job done with some style, but you may find that "upgrade-itis" will set in fairly quickly, especially that for a little more, you can find speakers which offer sonic improvement. Check out some of the Polk Audio speaker prices on Newegg.com, and you might find yourself justifiying the spending of a little more money.

Sony doesn't make the best speakers, but the newer line is a huge improvement over previous ones. For that price you are getting a lot of speaker. I know Polk is a favorite around here, but I'd say that those are probably on par with the Polk's Monitor series speakers. I have a pair of SS-B1000 bookshelf speakers and they are much better than I ever would have expected from Sony due to my experience with past offerings. Like it was stated before, these are very solid entry level speakers.
The TSi line of Polk's is definitely an upgrade, but to be honest I don't know how much of an upgrade you'd be looking at. You may get a little more clarity out of them over the Sony's, but I think saving up for something different is probably a better way to upgrade from where you're at now. There are many options out there that will sound much better for your money. The Polk's aren't a bad speaker, but I think its a small upgrade and with a little more money you can get a much substantial upgrade. You could maybe look at some DefTechs or some Energy speakers, or even some Paradigms as I think something along those lines would be a more noticeable upgrade. |

OP,
I used to own Sony speakers, and Sony speakers tend to be boomy, and the mids are not very good when comparing them to other speaker manufactures. I know the 7000s do a better job of this then the 5000s that I owned, but I still found that the 8" woofers tended to be too boomy. Of them all the 6000s I liked the best, but even those cannot stand up to what you can get from a company like Energy with the pair of c-300s that I have. For $260/pr, you can still get some Energys C-300s from Audio Advisor and then pick up the C-C50 center channel for about $80 and would be a much better investment then you would get from the Sony's. |

You could check out the Monitor Audio BR5s $650 list and the BRCLR center, look at www.monitoraudiousa.com, you will need to negotiate down some with your local dealer, but I am sure you could come in right around the $800 mark. Or you can check out the Energy RC-30s $245/ea on www.audioadvisor.com and match that with a RC Mini center channel $199 or the RCLCR center speaker $325 @ www.vanns.com. If your willing to build slowly also look at www.6ave.com at teh Paradigm Monitor 7 v.5 that they have had on sale for about $379 ea. and then save up for the center channel. Good Luck. |

Hi!
Just register to tell you that if you still didnt buy them, you are wasting time, because this speakers do everything fine, maybe too much mids, but can be corrected with a parametric EQ.- My two cents, there are no better bang for the buck than this ![]() ![]() |

I ended up gettin BP7006's w/ a built in 300 watt sub!! LOL!!! I listen to those speakers. They sounded a little muffled.... I went to BestBuy heard of these DefTech's.. Then I researched them. They're just simply amazing. I feel the bass in the movie now. I couldnt have made a better purchase. |

I ended up getting the Monitor 70's for $179 each at newegg and a cs 20 for$199.....what a HUGE difference compared to the old Sonys. If you get the Sony 7000 you would have to go with thier only center (cn 5000?) that is avail. and it sucks. I now use my 7000's for my rears!!!

I went to Fry's again to listen to the Polk's and I really didn't hear anything that would make me want to go buy them to replace my Sony's. |

the thing is with the 7000s and the 5000s they have the 8" woofer and are so boomy that the cn5000 is drownd out. the 6.5" woofers on the 6000s make the center better, in terms of working with one another. I shopped both polks and sonys at the same time, polks had better highs, sony better lows, at the time i went with the lows, once I found Energy speakers, the sonys had to go.

Sorry I never did get a hold of this thread again. I see you went with Polk Audio Monitor 70s! A very good speaker and a clear step up from your original request! Bi-amped, too! The CS20 is an outstanding center channel speaker. That's the one I plan on upgrading to (currently have a Polk CSi25 center channel speaker originally purchased a couple years ago from The Stereo Advantage). We ARE neighbors! I have a few good friends in North Tonawanda. ![]() |

No offense taken at all. Not everyone is going to have the same taste in speakers. I am not saying that Sony speakers are the best, I just don't think that they are that much worse than some Polk speakers.

i would agree with that. i had the ss-f6000's for about a year and enjoyed them very much. i had them paired with the sscn-5000 center and the sounds was great. i now have polks, and while there is a small difference in the quality of sound, it is nothing earth shattering. Sony makes a pretty decent speaker, much better than they used to be and they are a good, cost effective way to get into building your first separates system

Hey Brett, nice to see you again. How you been buddy? Hope everything is well.
Back on topic, OP, I personally never saw a huge difference from the Sony SSF5000 to the Polk Monitor 50, but with the Energys, I noticed a difference that was amazing. I finally heard higher end speakers that weren't my dads B&W 600s. Sony makes fine entry level speakers (especially the 6000s) but I was always turning up the dB gain on the center channel or the volume to hear dialog. If anyone is getting sony speakers get the SS-F6000s, best of the 3 they have. Last edited by callas01; 06-28-2009 at 02:30 PM. |

I juat ordered the SS-F6000's. I wont be using the 5000 center though, I dont have enough height in front of my TV. I'm just gonna use the center from the Sony SS-CR3000 I already had (its a three pack that came with center and two surrounds.) I'm hoping the F6000's wont overpower it.
