I am amazed at the people that go cheap when it comes to speakers. That is one of the most important parts of the system. And I also would not recommend Sony receivers you can do much better, like for example Denon or Onkyo.

Well they will be better then Bose, but for $300 don't expect too much. There going to be a on the flat side, with no real lows & no real hights. You will need a sub.

My speakers are not bad... but I do like the RF-83 Klipsch's. They sound bright and crisp.

Are you only referring to speakers like the Martin Logan Statement E2's?



Or the Infinity Series V Reference Series?



Or the Sonus Faber Stradivarius, German Physik, etc.?

If so then yes, Onkyo is not high end. But in my opinion for the average person the TX-NR905 receiver, at $1999, is a high end receiver before venturing into the seperate components arena, like Anthem, or Rotel, etc.

For speakers I would seriously stay clear of Fluance unless you do not care about fidelity at all, which if you're looking to hook up to an HDMI receiver and watch Blu-ray movies and PlayStation 3 games on is probably not the case. Any internet order company should give you 30 days in home to try out your speakers, Fluance only give you 7 days - that should trigger HUGE warning bells right away!

I am not anyway associated with or have anything to do with Fluance and I have been dealing with Hi-End audio for quite some time so I am giving my own unbiased opinion and hopefully keep others from buying this &*@#! My previous equipment consists of a completely restored Dyna St-70,(SDS labs goodies) A set of Heathkit W5-M's completely restored, NHT 3.3's and VT-2's, Rotel CD player, amp, pre-amp, audioquest midnight wire, and many more but these are my latest so I pretty much know audio.
I just recently purchased a set of SV-10's and I must say, either all of the previous reviews that I have seen where done by FLUANCE themselves or there are a lot of people who don't know what REAL speakers are supposed to sound like! First off I did what everyone claims to do such as give them time to break in, Bi-wire, bla, bla ,bla and still all they could muster was just plain ole' sound! Sort of like they way basic car speakers sound, flat muddy with the detail hidden below the mud! So i figured i would crack these mudd ducks open and see what was inside! Boy did I get hosed! Of course I knew that was probably gonna happen, but now we know. First off, the wood is of the pressed fiber type and measures 11mm thick, not even 1/2"! Then I pulled the sub out, if you could call it that, and just as I figured, Junk!I have seen better stock CAR speakers then these! Then there's the cross-over, Now I am thinking maybe the crossover is the real thing, but nope, once again junk! Hell, my kid could have done a better job in electronics class! maybe thats why when I put my ear up to the sub you can hear just about everything. So much for "Low Pass" filtering! I think it was more like "All pass filtering" And never mind the dampening foam....OK maybe the small little piece they threw in is good enough! Anyway you getthe picture! Not even anywhere near worth $299.00! I could run out to my car, pull out my Pioneers, slap them in a wooden box and even they would sound better! There is one thing good that I can say and that is the build quality is not too bad. All in all these are just another scam speaker but with a better quality build to make you think you are getting something worthwhile but in reality just another "White Van" speaker. I hope this sheds some light these speakers.

If your budget for speakers can increase by $70 I would seriously consider the JBL SCS500.5 5.1 speaker set. You get speakers that actually have technology in them, have a good sound for a 5.1 speaker set and for that sort of price are hard to beat. Add in that the Subwoofer is actually rated in RMS and not "peak" Watts, does hit down to 30Hz as advertised and you've got an excellent sounding system at the $400 or less price point.

Then you have a set-up that you can slowly upgrade piece by piece over the next few years. Replace the fronts with some bookshelves in a year or so, then the centre, then get some more bookshelves in another year, or some floorstanding towers and move the bookshelves to the rear, then then a nice new sub, etc., etc.

It includes a pair of gorgeous towers, a full-size matching center speaker, and two nifty little surround speakers--all for $260. That's not a misprint, Fluance sells the whole enchilada direct for two hundred and sixty dollars, plus shipping. No, the system doesn't offer the sort of cleaner, more refined sound you'll find on rivals in the $800 and above range. But if you're on a limited budget and have the room for a full-size speaker set, the Fluance SX-HTB's combination of credible sound quality and solid construction is an amazing value.

Design of Fluance SX-HTB
The SX-HTB system is shipped double boxed, and we must say, Fluance's exceptional packing exceeds that of far more expensive speakers. Clearly, Fluance wants to make sure your speakers arrive safe and sound.

The entire ensemble is finished in a durable Natural Beech vinyl wrap (the only finish option). The speakers' robust MDF wood construction cabinets are built to a high standard. Rather than rely on flimsy plastic pins to attach the grilles to the speakers, brass pins are on the speakers and fit into the grilles. We'd love to see other manufacturers adapt this ingenious idea.

Standing 38.8 inches tall, the towers definitely qualify as full-size speakers, and each one weighs a hefty 33.4 pounds. Each tower's elegantly proportioned cabinet rests on an integral base, which in turn features adjustable brass feet. The 15.8-wide center speaker is no less impressive, and the surround speakers, which also include bases, are wall mountable. They're the babies of the package--just 8.8 inches high.

The five-piece system doesn't include a subwoofer, but the tower speakers' deep bass capabilities may satisfy in small home theaters. Then again, if your room is larger, you may want to add a matching sub, such as Fluance's DB-150 or DB-200 powered models. We used the DB-150 for our evaluations.

Features of Fluance SX-HTB
The towers feature dual 6.5-inch poly-coated woofers and a 1-inch silk-dome tweeter. The center channel speaker sports a pair of 4-inch poly-coated woofers, and a 1-inch plastic tweeter, while the surround speakers include the same type of woofer and tweeter. All of the speakers are ported designs.

The center and surround speakers use gold-plated, five-way binding posts, and the towers' connectivity incorporates double sets of posts to enhance performance with bi-amp/bi-wire capability.

Fluance recently upped its parts-and-labor warranty coverage from three to five years.

Performance of Fluance SX-HTB
Before we get into the particulars, we'd just like to say that the speakers' gutsy sound rocked our world and listening was lots of fun.

Audiophiles that we are, we felt our acoustic jazz CDs' treble sounded a little too bright, but depending on your taste, that may be a good thing. Bass was also a bit too "creamy rich" for us, and unless you're a total bass glutton, you'll want to move the towers way out into the room, two or more feet from the rear wall. Bass definition picked up after we did that and spread them further apart from each other. We wouldn't recommend cramming these speakers in small room, less than 200 square feet.

The towers really came into their own when we played Led Zeppelin's concert CD set, How the West Was Won. The band's righteous electric mayhem was a total blast. Jimmy Page's guitars and Robert Plant's vocals popped out of the speakers with a vengeance.

Moving on to DVDs, we added the DB-150 subwoofer, and our favorite war movies, such as The Thin Red Line and U-571, had plenty of impact, but the SX-HTB's center speaker's faults were more obvious. Dialogue was undernourished to the point of being thin. (The DB-150, meanwhile, won't win any awards for low-down finesse or detail, but it adds muscle to the system's deep bass capabilities and matches the speakers well.) The Lion King DVD sounded so magnificent and lush we forgot to take notes during the movie.

To reiterate: The SX-HTB offers a lot for the money, but don't kid yourself into believing the system competes with speaker packages that cost upward of a grand--it doesn't. If you can afford the higher-end alternatives, pony up the loot. But if you can't, the SX-HTB offers one of the best surround-sound bangs for your buck that we've heard in a long time.

In fact I wouldn't be surprised if Nuance renamed themselves Fluance. They sound like the same shitty company.

Cheap components, thin cheap wood resulting in awful resonance, crossovers that don't work, paper cones.

Nuance used to offer a similar warranty, in fact the sales pitch was "even if you took a pencil and stabbed the woofer, we'll replace it for you"

Why? Because even at $300 they've barely spent $100 making the damn things.

Stay clear.

It's someone who doesn't know what they're talking about.

Budget shopper level is a 5.1 system from Klipsch or JBL for around $400.

Fluance is shite. It does not come close to $350 5.1 satellite systems from the brands I've just mentioned and of course it doesn't compare to $1,000 systems.
