I for one have not had any issues with my BDP S-1700.
Oh, I must have been looking at the region A one then. The multi-region one is apparently three times as expensive. Screw it, I guess I'll just keep ripping the few region B Blu-rays I actually buy.

My BDP S-1700 I got on eBay direct from 220 for $99. Try eBay for some reason they sell the region free players with Region A, B, and C functionality without an extra charge.

I'm kinda on the fence should I purchase a region free player or just purchase a Region B player. Not worried about having a Region A and Region B players. Thoughts anyone?

I'm thinking the same, buy two players, one Region B and other 4K Region A player but:
  • Where get a Region B player in USA?
  • Maybe not important but what about Region C titles from ASIA, japan titles by example? I have a couple.

In some way hurts pay $99 for the BDP S-1700 knowing that you can get the X800M2 4K UHD for $199

is a shame that make a X800M2 is not easy, at least I can't find any single tutorial of do it, I think needs some real hardware installation inside.

Japan titles are Region A. If you want to play Region C: Asia (except for Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and other areas of Southeast Asia) titles then you would most likely be best off with the region free player.

Not in my case. I couldn't be happier with my BluRay player.

Same. Both of my region-free Sony players were bought from 220 Electronics via eBay. One has wireless Internet and one is wired. Great prices and no technical issues at all (have had them both for over a year).

Ended up buying the BDP S-1700 from 220 for region B discs and using my 4K player for region A and since I don't need to worry about region coding on the 4K discs.

Now I'm looking at replacing my Sony X700 to many issues with this unit. Thinking of going with either the Panasonic 820 or the Sony 800M2 region free from 220. Nervous buying another Sony 4K player.

^ Me too, but I bought mine from Amazon. It's a great player, IMO.

question, are these hardware modded to be region free OR is it just a software or one of those remote (you can do it yourself) button things they just do for you then sell it as region free ? i have the BDP-S1700 and it's not region free... apparently sony themselves don't do region free units (there was a real reason but it escapes me at the moment).

and if a person can do this by simply using their remote would they have the method ?

Virtually every US Bluray player I'm aware of and most EU players have to be hardware modified in order to make them region free for blurays. There are some that can be remote changed or software modded for DVDs. There are a few units like the discontinued Seiki SR212S & SR4KP1 units that can be easily switched in the menu out of the box.

If you are good with a soldering iron there are some units that can be done pretty easily at home, but most folks aren;t that comfortable with doing it esp on the higher dollar players.

This refurb, have best offer, maybe they accept $75 ?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/SONY-BDP-S1...torefresh=true

Anyone has buy that refurb? is risky to buy a refurb?

Why I don't want buy used on his store? they ask for $139, those players non region free are sold for $50! brand new, the difference is $89! just for the region free thing.

One more thing, I have a Sony X950G, so I don't need the 4K upscaling from the Sony BDP-S6700 player?

I mean the TV himself can make the 4K upscaling with the SONY-BDP-S1700?
