Default Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - A Few Questions

1. Chamber of Secrets implies Dumbledore is quite intuitive. He was able to suspect Riddle, even though nothing indicated him in the Chamber of Secrets incidents. And apparently he was worried someone was giving secrets to Voldemort. But everyone it seems jumped on Black just because, I'm assuming, he was simply seen at the aftermath of the big event that got him locked up in Azkaban? Everyone just assumed he was the secret keeper, even though Sirius would have been able to tell them the truth?

2. Speaking of Pettigrew, did nobody ever wonder how he, as a rat, got to be in the Weasley's possession? We only knew he was Percy's Rat before being taken by Ron for his own.

Just some questions I have, cause I'm right now in the middle of reading it.

1. Everyone thought that Sirius would be the Potter's secret keeper. That was the plan from the get go and is who James and Lily picked for the job. However, at the last second, Sirius convinced them to use Peter instead.
Quote:
“Lily and James only made you Secret-Keeper because I suggested it,” Black hissed, so venomously that Pettigrew took a step backward. “I thought it was the perfect plan... a bluff... Voldemort would be sure to come after me, would never dream they’d use a weak, talentless thing like you... It must have been the finest moment of your miserable life, telling Voldemort you could hand him the Potters.”
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
2. Peter specifically targeted a wizard family to stay in the loop about the goings on in the Wizarding World. This way he could keep tabs on everyone and scurry back to his master should You Know Who ever return to full strength. It just so happens that family was the Weasleys. It was by pure coincidence that the Weasleys would end up becoming great friends with The Boy Who Lived.
Quote:
"Why else did you find a wizard family to take you in? Keeping an ear out for news, weren't YOU, Peter? Just in case your old protector regained strength, and it was safe to rejoin him...."

—Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
