I just finished reading The Crucible and it really made me think about the socio-political issues that we have. The drama, written by Arthur Miller, is a parallel to the Salem Witch Trials that occurred in Massachusetts in the late 16th century. A similar `witch hunt’ occurred during the MaCarthy era when the US Government feared the spread of communism in the country as it threatened the freedom of individuals. To gain control over the crisis, it sought out every single communist in the country and forced them to disclose the names of others involved. Shmoop’s take on this drama was very interesting. It offered various perspectives on this play that made very strong comments on how history repeats itself. A good site to go to if you want to update yours literary IQ!

My favorite book is 11 Harrowhouse. I was 13 when I read that the first time. It's so disappointing to know now that the movie adaptation was so dumbed down. The book version was far more serious and had plenty of sexual content in it (left that part out in the book report and class presentation ![]() ![]() Last edited by Hatter; 04-20-2011 at 07:25 PM. |

The Harry Potter series is overall my favorite set of books of all time. I started reading em in 6th grade (I read dozens of books a month as a kid, no exaggeration...and not Goosebumps either
![]() However, there are certainly others I'd consider my favorite. I'd say the list after HP goes like this 1) The Alchemist 2) The Great Gatsby 3) Catcher in the Rye 4) The Jungle 5) The Fountainhead 6) Fahrenheit 451 7) Moby Dick 8) 1984 9) Animal Farm 10) Angels and Demons Honorable Mentions: The Crucible, The Da Vinci Code, Huckleberry Finn, Tale of Two Cities, Siddhartha, The Three Musketeers, Slaughterhouse Five |
