Does anyone here subscribe to LOA? I have bought books from them before, really nice presentation but ended up sending them back due to damage. I am thinking of ordering from them again, any thoughts on them?

I have looked into them but I find them a tad on the expensive side. You can get the same editions much cheaper in other formats.

I just pre-ordered my first Library of America title: The Western: Four Classic Novels of the 1940s & 50s, edited by Ron Hansen. This is Volume #331 of the main series of Library of America books, and was detailed here. Copies can be pre-ordered direct from the Library of America here.

I'm not a big reader, but what attracts me here is the fact that all four novels are classic films:

so I'm hoping that this can get me to read them. I have of course heard of the Library of America before, but the fact that this particular volume was available to pre-order seemed serendipitous.

I was able to get 10% off for my first order, and UPS shipping is apparently free, so I paid $28.80 total, which is not bad for a dust jacket hardcover with four reprinted novels and a scholarly introduction. Apparently, copies will be available direct later this month, though that might change.

The book will be also be available later in the year (some sites say May 26th, 2020, but others now say September 1st, 2020) at retail stores and Amazon.com. Because of the date change, however, I suppose stock may be delayed in general.

The Library of America listing for The Western has now been updated to say the following:

Quote:
Advance copies will arrive soon from the printer and will begin shipping exclusively to LOA Web Store customers the first week of May. Order your copy today and it will be shipped to you as soon as they arrive—months ahead of the publication date.
Available in bookstores September 1, 2020.
