Default Sony X700M won't play Region B

I recently purchased a refurbished Sony X700M disc player. This morning I popped in a Region B disc and it didn't play. I was under the impression that this was a region-free player (I live in Region A). It's really hard to find info about which regions a player accepts (or maybe it's just me?) but from what I gathered, the X700 is region-free so I assumed the x700M would be no different. What am I doing wrong?

Where did you buy it from? Manufacturer? Normally a Blu ray player has to have a part modded that enables it to become region free. They are not region free out of the box unless you have specifically brought a region free model.

In addition, if your player is modified to be region free, you have to manually switch the region on your player before playing a disc locked to a different region than what the player is currently set to. Region free players usually come with a note on how to do so.

In addition, my X700 couldn't play anything reliably

I exchanged it and the second one was better and the FW update indeed helped.

But, eventually I threw it out to make sure no one else got disappointed by it.

There was a time with Sony Blu Ray players were the kind of reliability but with UHD BD Panasonic seems to be the way to go.

Oh, I thought it was an across-the-board type of thing, didn't know it depended on the seller. Thank you.

Edit: Meant to quote TheAshCohen09. First time using the forums here lol.

That's too bad. I'm gonna return my player but I just ordered a region-free X700 last night. Hopefully it works well.

Unless it's physically modified none of the players will be region free for Blu-rays or DVDs. Ultra HD Blu-rays are region-less.

With the SONY players that are modified, you press the color buttons when a disc isn't playing to change regions.
