But a flat release? Completely worthless.
I agree the13thman, a 2D only home video version is completely worthless and i would still buy this film on blu ray 3D as well, i would rather watch it in 3D over 2D.

Interestingly, the only country that still hasn't gotten this film theatrically yet is Japan, yes they might get the film late, but i would be interested to see if the film gets a blu ray 3D release over there.

For me, Boxtrolls has the worst and Coraline has the best.
As far as 3D presentation goes it's
1. Coraline
2. ParaNorman
3. Kubo and the Two Strings
4. Boxtrolls

Boxtrolls felt like a 2D most the time.

Coraline wasn’t mostly mild 3D IMO. Mostly medium to strong, I’d say. Agreed on ParaNorman, very mild. And, it sucks that they stiffed us by not releasing a 3D Blu of Missing Link.

It's been a while since I watched Coraline, but I remember finding all the circus scenes very pronounced stereoscopically, and another memorable moment is of course the needle coming through the screen in the opening titles.

The thing to remember about Coraline, is that they deliberately ramped up the 3D to make the 'other' world seem more exciting, so to contrast this, I would expect the everyday world scenes to be shallower than some might have been liked.

I haven't made a direct comparison, but none of the other Laika titles impressed me quite the way Coraline did. Sounds like they may have taken the narrower inter-ocular setting on Coraline and just used it as default. I saw them all theatrically and bought the 3D-Blurays.

Up until Missing Link. I have no idea about that film or its 3D, and unfortunately it looks like I never will.

Yes, I didn't bother watching it in 2D and am not likely to. If the 3D version never sees the light of day again then I will never watch this film.

It’s very disappointing that Fox did not release a 3D disc of this when they released Alita: Battle Angel with a 3D disc just a few weeks prior.
I was thinking LAIKA had a massive control over their home media disc releases similar to James Cameron. And LAIKA supported 3D as hard as James Cameron did.

Laika's use of 3D after Coraline was as unadventurous as Pixar's, each title just as disappointing as the last.

I did eventually pick this up used for a pound but haven't watched it yet, I can't stand watching 3D movies in 2D.

Studio Laika probably lost most of their influence since their movies aren't profitable.

Yes, sadly their use of 3D is to make the 3D as mild as they can in most of their films. For as amazing as their animation skills are, they really could take their 3D strength up to the same level for more impact and less like nearly 2D.

Surprisingly, they are working on a new animated film, The Night Gardener.

Quote:

“The Night Gardener is a beautiful and timeless story that quickens the pulse as often as it breaks the heart. Bill is a masterful storyteller. He’s crafted a lyrical world layered with complex characters, provocative ideas, and keenly felt emotion. It’s gonna be one helluva movie.”

Dubuque also added:

“I’m delighted that Travis Knight saw in The Night Gardener a story worthy of the time-intensive process and collective talent of Laika’s in-house artisans. Laika ’s creativity and dedication to detail is, in my opinion, as close as one can come to conjuring storytelling magic.”
No word on a 3D version yet for the upcoming stop-motion animated film from Laika Studios.

IIRC the only reason they exist is basically because someone that worked there is the son of a Nike billionaire and got his dad to buy the company. Sadly we live in a society where great art often relies on the patronage of absurdly rich people. I wonder how many Coralines never got made because there wasn’t a billionaire parent around
