So luckily for me I can for the most part afford and will probably buy the LE's of titles that fit those criterias, but I still struggle to justify doubledipping same titles from different companies.

F.ex with the Righting Wrongs release. I could buy both if I wanted to, but the 88Films is my preferred option and the VS release is going to cost me an additional $50-80 depending on the mood of the norwegian customs that day. Thats a lot to pay for some different artwork, another commentary (when I already have 3 of them WITH 1 being from that very person I would miss out on), different booklet and a few more interviews from the same persons (probably very similar also) that have interviews on the 88Films release (for the most part). In the end I figured I would be happier and more satisfied with the 88Films release if I only own that one alone. Listening to Man V Film's Collecting 2.0 have really helped me save a lot of money, and the best of all, feeling good about not having EVERYTHING. Cant give this guy enough credit for discussing topics that arent really talked enough about, but are probably in every movie collector's mind - in various degrees.

Thank you for recommending man v film. Great watch. One thing that I am consciously doing is replacing my favorite DVDs with blurays. These are films I love and know I will watch again, and definitely do not want these to go OOP. I don't really view these as adding to my collection because I get rid of the DVD. So net add is zero, though these may sit on the shelf for a while. However, I do like the concept of only buying movies that I plan to watch soon. Thanks again.

I am just always amazed, especially in these economic times, that the price of these releases almost never come into play in these forums. So many people (not just in this thread) say 'day 1 purchase!' and "double dip for sure".

Maybe it is also because my tastes are so wide - everything from 1900-2022 (though I definitely lean toward pre-1960), practically every genre, director, country - I really enjoy them all. My want list is insane -over 1,000 movies and growing every month as companies announce some of my favorite films/genres/directors... Plus, there is also the practical side. Even buying my movies on sale at the lowest price, my unwatched pile is also insane. Would take me years to go through them all (especially since I tend to watch all the supplements). Yet more LEs are released and if I don't get these now, I may never get the chance to watch them in the future (quite a lot of my recent purchases have already gone OOP quickly).

On one hand, this is an incredible time for physical media - that is supposed to be dead - just not sure how much I can keep up with everything..

Cheers.

Beside the obvious answer, that people very likely are in different financial situations in here, a couple of other points may also come into play.

You mention how many people will say "day 1 purchase!" etc. But it is one thing to post this in a moment of joy when you see something you like finally being announced, but it is a completely other thing to actually commit to it.

I can't remember who said it, but some industry insider once commented here how they couldn't really use people's promises to buy "day 1" to anything, because experience had shown them that while a lot of people might have that intention, only few would actually follow up.

I know I myself have been guilty of this many times. And while I have actually started pre-ordering more this year, after missing out on several releases I really wanted last year (only for me to have to pay more for them on eBay), my finances just don't allow me to pick up everything. Something will have to wait for sales or an eventual standard release.

Which brings me to my second point: I find that most people have a much more narrow tastes than me. I am in a similar situation like you - I like most genres and am interested in everything from the earliest of the early silent films to what was released in the theatres last week. That makes it much harder to collect than someone who focuses on maybe one or two genres in a narrow time period or maybe on the releases of a particular label. I mean, I don't understand people who can limit themselves to focus solely on 1980s horror, but sometimes I do envy them. It would make my life MUCH more easy.

My main focus is horror/ exploitation, which of course helps a bit, but not so much when you are interested in the whole sprawling history of it. On top of that, there is, of course, all the non-horror I am interested in, too - the classics, the art-house pictures, the silent films, the science fiction, even the odd mainstream fare ...

Personally, the last couple of years, I have felt that I am running behind, hopelessly trying to catch up. For financial reasons I have chosen to focus mostly on horror and on getting the limited edition releases I really want, but that means that I am neglecting so many other things I would love to get. I could easily find hundreds of releases from each of, say, Kino Lorber, Criterion or Warner Archive, which I would buy in a heartbeat, but which I have to push to some other day or at least to a sale.

Between the boutique label limited editions and the constant sales, there isn't really room to get anything else. I can't even remember when I last bought something from Criterion because I know that they are not limited and will most likely stick around for years to come. Every month becomes a game of pick and choose - which limited editions to get now, and which I can perhaps take a chance on, hoping they will still be available later or maybe even in a sale.

My film collection has always been very carefully curated to my own tastes, pretty much since the days of Betamax. There was a time towards the end of VHS when I was regularly attending a couple of large car boot sales local to me and picking up anything that caught my eye for one reason or another (I'd often buy up to 20 videos at a time) sometimes even just going by the cover, but only because they were typically being sold for peanuts (average 50p per vid, as cheap as 10p, never more than £3). Everything else I've only bought because I want to see it and/or own a decent/the best available physical copy of a film I know I like. I don't have that many blind buys (and all of the ones I ended up not liking, or where the extras weren't worth the price of admission either, I sold), and I'm not one of those collectors that buys everything a particular label puts out just so they have a complete set (I love 88 and all, but there's no way in a million years I'm going to be buying Robotrix or Darkroom [among many others]).

The only time I'll pick up two releases of the same film is if it's one of my favourites and there are markedly different extras that make the double-dip worth it (as I am quite a fan of extras and do occasionally buy films I'm not that keen on purely for the extras alone - appreciate many don't care about extras at all, and that's absolutely fine).

But, being a collector since the late 80s, I know all-too well that, for as long as physical media still exists at least, or where it gets to the point where there are only one or two studios still offering physical licensing deals, you will never stay on top of it, you'll always be playing catch-up, and there will always be at least one release you'll miss and never get hold of. Nature of the game unfortunately.

Quote:
A follow up of sorts to his earlier film, the seminal Caliber 9 (1972), Blood and Diamonds (1977) blasts its way into familiar poliziotteschi territory, leaving scars, bullets and tire tracks in its bloody wake. After being set up by the Mafia gang he is part of, Guido (Claudio Cassinelli) is sent to prison but upon he vows to take revenge on those who betrayed him. Another must for all collectors of high octane Italian crime thrillers from the 1970s.

Kung Fu Bob hint below. It looks like one of the teased re-releases might be Snake and Crane Arts of Shaolin?

Here's a WIP photo teaser (though it's been finished at this point) for an upcoming 88 Films release.
It's a kung fu "McGuffin", and a lot of dangerous people (some also disarmingly beautiful) are after it at any cost. Stay tuned for details... #secretkungfumanual #88films #yourstylecanneverbeatmine #whatcoulditbe?

Fantastic news that there’s more poliziotteschi on the way. Keep them coming. Have a bootleg of Blood and Diamonds so the blu ray is going to look fantastic. We need more Barbara Bouchet on blu ray!

88 Films and Eureka have basically now got my wallet by the balls. Shedloads of HK goodness and the occasional poliziotteschi thrown in for good measure.

I absolutely love Gorgeous!

Really happy if this one gets a UK release too, I imported the (bloody hard to find) Australian blu as I prefer the shorter international cut so fingers crossed this version includes both cuts.

Hopefully there is a tribute to Brad Allen (even something simple like what 88 films did with Jimmy Wang Yu on The Killer Meteors) who sadly passed last year.
