Default James Bond Collections & Releases

I don't know about y'all, but I'm fairly particular about the Blu-rays that I purchase. I'm weird about sequels, if I have a bunch of movies from a series, it bothers me if all the cases are styled completely different from one another. I also don't like to skip sequels, even if they're terrible (i.e. I want to own The Exorcist II just because I own the first and third, but I really hate that movie). This brings me to the topic of this thread.

I don't own any James Bond movie, and I'm pretty sure I'm not a giant fan of most of them. That being said, I can't just buy one of them; if I buy one, I need all of them. I've been trying to figure out if I wanted to get a collection or if I should just purchase each individual movie. What do you guys think? Will I get better extras if I buy the movies individually, or will I get the same extras with the collections? Are there any releases that I should particularly avoid?

The Collections

Individual Releases

Non-Canonical Releases

(Let me know if I missed any, excluding duplicates)

Every disc release of each Bond film is the exact same regardless of it being individual or in bundles; the only difference will most likely be audio or subtitle options depending on where you get individual titles or bundles from. The decision is up to you. If you want all of them; The James Bond Collection has all of 'em thus far. If you want to go slowly through I'd recommend the actor collections. If you're one of those that want to have them individually shown then get the individual collections. Bare in mind that only the '15 releases (the ones with the white border) is the only set with a consistent spine if that matters to you for displaying.

As the discs are pretty much all the same I would suggest getting the box set in the white box, it has them all, it can be found cheap and takes up very little shelf space. The only drawback of course is that when Bond 25 eventually comes out you’ll have to buy that and it might violate your rule about packaging being stylized differently, plus it doesn’t include the two “unofficial” films.

Yeah, I was figuring I'd hold off on the Daniel Craig collection until he was done making the movies, but then again, that's in hopes that they make an updated collection that looks like the previous ones.

They’ll probably discontinue all these and re-release them when the new one comes out, and maybe even have UHD releases too.

I got the Bond 50 set, the individual release of Spectre, and the UV code for the full set online. That’ll work for me for now.

That doesn't drive you nuts have the one single release with the rest in the pack?

It does, but not enough to spends all that money, not to mention the fact that there’ll be another new Bond film on disc within the next year or so.

Bond 50 has been replaced by this

The one with the black slipbox has the extra bonus disc with the exclusive documentary.

Just get one or the other depending on whether or not you want the documentary.

Oh and here's a post I did a couple years ago talking about the various sets because of James Bond is one of the most guilty of re-re-re-releasing the exact same set over and over.

I think the one exception to that is CASINO ROYALE (Craig version). The Sony "Collector's Edition" has a few exclusive extras that aren't on the MGM releases. Also, the 2012 UK BD has the full uncut version of the film (US releases are still the theatrical PG-13 version).

I guess there's no collection that only has the pre-Craig movies? I still have the four "Ultimate Edition" DVD box sets of the first 20 films and would like to get them on Blu-ray eventually but my brother already has the Craig movies on Blu-ray. So I guess the only way to get the original films on their own would be to either buy them individually or go for the "007" actor collections?

Not as far as I can find. I was thinking I'd pick up all the actor-specific collections except for the Craig one since he's confirmed that he's doing one more. From what everyone is saying, it seems like that's the best way to go anyway.

What are the two unofficial films?

Never Say Never Again is a remake of Thunderball from an entirely different film company. It has never been included in James Bond collections or canon. Somehow they gor Sean Connery to came back for it after being out of the role for about 20 years. Casino Royale was more of a spoof than an actual Bond film.

Bond 50 is the best for me. It also beats the OCD "how can it be complete when they're making more?" problem by being a celebration of just the first 50 years. So it's complete for that era wheras the other collections would be obsolete sooner or later.

All except for these:

The thing I noticed with all the Bond blu-ray releases is the lack of originality in the cover artwork - basically just a still-shot from the movie or simply the Bond actor posing with his gun. I still remember the original VHS releases back in the 1980's where most, if not all, had the original cinema poster on the cover.

Gorgeous steelbooks were released of 9 random titles when Spectre came out:

I got the OHMSS steelbook.

I never understood why they did those 9 and no others.
