20th Century Fox Missing Link (2019) [No 3D Blu-ray]

Moderator note:
Though Missing Link did play theatrically in 3D, its distributors have opted to insult 3D fans by only releasing the film for purchase in 2D formats, so please note that no 3D Blu-ray is available anywhere in the world.

Quote:
Meet Mr. Link: 8 feet tall, 630 lbs, and covered in fur, but don’t let his appearance fool you… he is funny, sweet, and adorably literal, making him the world’s most lovable legend. Tired of living a solitary life in the Pacific Northwest, Mr. Link recruits fearless explorer Sir Lionel Frost to guide him on a journey to find his long-lost relatives in the fabled valley of Shangri-La. Along with adventurer Adelina Fortnight, our fearless trio of explorers encounter more than their fair share of peril as they travel to the far reaches of the world to help their new friend.

Two "links" for this movie created at the exact same time! (7:39 am, if you're keeping score at home)

Laika films are usually very mild 3D. Boxtrolls had the best of their previous films IMO. Coroline also had some cool 3d moments but mostly mild 3D. Kubo was very mild. Paranorman was also mild 3D. I am not at all impressed with this trailer.

Distributed by Lionsgate in the UK, so no surprise there. Hopefully Universal will release the 3D disc somewhere.

This looks like will be a rare find in 3D theatrically.

Story-wise the only Laika film I like and own is Paranorman. I agree about the mild 3D but enjoyed the humor.

Very much agree that Laika studios is very talented, but recently, almost totally misses the point of what the purpose of 3D is. If it's close to 2D most of the time, then it's a waste of 3D IMO, because 3D has a ton of range and is most spectacular in the strong 3D range, and they're only using the mild end of the 3D spectrum in most of the film (haven't seen this one in 3D yet, but the 3D trailer didn't look promising), almost rarely ever having the courage or boldness to make the 3D exciting like NWave's animated films.

Whoever is deciding at Laika to keep the 3D mild most times, is not doing 3D any favors at all. New 3D moviegoers will go to see it in 3D and wonder if the 3D is working. Not good. Then they'll think twice before seeing another film in 3D.

Weak 3D films don't help the 3D industry.

That said, Missing Link looks comical and entertaining, even though it's one of four recent Bigfoot themed animated movies in the past 2 years now.

I would like to see this film in theaters, but Hellboy is in theaters Friday and I want to check that out first.

Just saw the movie in 3D and it was definitely in keeping with previous Laika films. This was one of the weakest 3D films I believe I have ever seen. It was so bad that I really thought I was watching a 2D version of the movie. I removed my glasses a few times during the movie and there was barely any 3D separation. I only went because I'm a 3D fan so it was definitely a waste of money for me.

Excellent film, 3D is mild. This is also in Dolby Cinema, so if you have to choose I would go with Dolby Cinema 2D, there’s no way it won’t be better. I’ll probably see it a second time with A-List in Dolby to confirm some time this week.

There is a point in the film where there is a gun barrel pointed straight out at the audience, and that was a missed opportunity for a great 3D scene.

With Alita, one giant Sasquatch sized step forward, with Missing Link / Shazam, two human sized steps back.

Yeah I also saw this in 3D with my AMC A-List and was disappointed. It was a charming and delightful movie, but it's not worth seeing in 3D if you have to actually pay extra for the ticket.

The 3D was extremely mild throughout, and it was extra frustrating because it was clear that the director framed shots with 3D in mind. There are plenty of objects pushed towards the camera (gun barrels especially) and a climactic scene with characters hanging from a great height where the depth is simply not pushed at all. So even though watching this in 2D would make you think "Wow, this would be awesome in 3D!" you'd be wrong. Because whoever is responsible for this 3D conversion simply didn't care enough to push things out of the frame or create any kind of impressive depth into the background.

Still a good movie, though! Even if it wasn't worth it in 3D. (Glad I didn't pay extra for it!)

I don't know if it were just me but I saw this in 3D Thursday night and the the overall 3D was solid. It wasn't strong but it wasn't weak either.

Thanks for your thoughts on the 3D. How would you say this compared to prior Laika 3D films, including Boxtrolls and ParaNorman's 3D?
When you say solid, would you say mostly medium layers of 3D?

I ask with an open mind, as I saw Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse, and saw mostly medium layers of 3D (other than some mild shots) with stronger 3D during action scenes, whereas some others saw mostly mild 3D. That said, Laika's track record for 3D above the mostly mild range is not good.

That's how I felt after seeing other Laika films in 3D. Other than a few shots on rare occasions, they currently have no ambition for exciting 3D.

The movie looks like fun, so I'll see it on video (saw Hellboy this weekend and was entertained), but sad to hear about the mild 3D Laika is notorious for.

Mild 3D through most of a film hurts the 3D industry as people are being more or less punished with wearing 3D glasses to watch a nearly 2D film. Then the ones who don't see 3D often are like, "Well what was the point of wearing 3D glasses for that?" Make the 3D exciting to watch, so it's memorable.

just an update, this does not belong to Universal as the original post indicates but to UA Releasing so it may or may not increase its chances of a 3D bluray.

I wrote emails to programmers in Switzerland today about this. There are both English and French posters here advertising that the film is 3D, and I'm pretty damn sure I saw the 3D trailer before Wonder Park two weeks ago.
The fact that even the Swiss local posters in French state "également disponible en 3D", yet not a single cinema in the entire French-speaking region (multiple cities) is showing it in 3D (not even one early afternoon slot on a weekday), amounts to false advertising.
I doubt they'll add a 3D slot for next week (although that's happened before after I emailed), but they need to be made aware of the contradictions (+ that demand for 3D exists).

thats not how it works, if the studio doesnt make you show in at least one screen its up to the theaters at that point and theaters have to see if there is anything they can cancel to fit this in without getting in trouble with other studios it is not as simple as you think.
