United Kingdom Shiva Baby (2020)

Shiva Baby Blu-ray

Shiva Baby Blu-ray Vinegar Syndrome Exclusive Slipcover

Mubi Snaps Up TIFF Comedy ‘Shiva Baby’ for U.K., Germany, Latin America

Arthouse streaming service Mubi has snapped up rights to Toronto International Film Festival title “Shiva Baby” for the U.K., Ireland, Germany, Austria, India, Turkey and Latin America.

Written and directed by Canadian filmmaker Emma Seligman, “Shiva Baby” follows a young bisexual Jewish woman at a shiva — a mourning tradition in the Jewish community — at which she must confront her over-achieving ex-girlfriend as well as her sugar daddy, his girlfriend and their baby.

Utopia Media boarded the film ahead of its Toronto premiere.

“Shiva Baby” — which began life as a short written and directed by Seligman while studying film at New York University — screened in the narrative feature competition at SXSW, and received its public premiere at last month’s TIFF. Variety critic Tomris Laffly said of the movie, “Think of this late-coming-of-age farce as a funny ‘Krisha’ or the indoor apocalypse that takes place in ‘Mother!’ — but with broken glass objects, a deafeningly screaming baby, a relentlessly suspicious wife and prying relatives instead of blood and guts — and you’ll get some sense of its edge-of-your-seat character.”

The film stars Rachel Sennott (“Call Your Mother”), Molly Gordon (“Booksmart”), Dianna Agron (“Glee”), Polly Draper (“Billions”), Danny Deferrari (“Pan Am”) and Fred Melamed (“The Morning Show”).

Star Sennott also executive produced alongside Rhianon Jones, Victoria Ku, Martin Altmann, Fiona Altmann and Sue Collins. Seligman, Kieran Altmann, Katie Schiller and Lizzie Shapiro produced the film.

The deal was struck between Mubi and David Betesh at Utopia.

“Shiva Baby” is the most recent festival buy for Mubi...(cont.)
Early festival reviews are saying its a riot, equal parts tense and hilarious. Would be interesting to see who decides to distribute this in North American territories and on streaming platforms in the US.

Fingers crossed NEON or A24 will obtain rights and give it some sort of theatrical release in 2021, before releasing it on VOD.

I could also see Sony Pictures Classics, Searchlight Pictures, or Focus Features picking this up instead.

Why is there a British Flag next to the title?

The listing on Amazon also isn't clear if it's the limited edition copy. It could be just the standard version.

I wish this had the 2018 short that the film was based on.

Otherwise, it wasn't bad, but ultimately shallow. Main character couldn't handle life and all the other attendees were basically Jewish tropes. Dianna Agron was great and would have made a more compelling lead.

Just watched this on cable. Absolutely loved it (and I'm not Jewish). Will be getting the VS LE in my next order from them.

Yeah I thought this was pretty good. At least captures that sense of post-adolescence anxiety and family pressures. Itís a strong debut that will hopefully segue into a more ambitious and impressive sophomore effort.

Just watched this on HBOmax. Thought it was great. So awkward and intense. Loved Molly Gordon in it. Dianna Agron was great too.

Saw this won a pretty big award at the independent Spirit awards. Just an FYI this is still available on HBOMAX.

It looks like it’s pretty good from the trailer and apparently only cost a couple hundred thousand dollars to make

Was in my Top 10 last year, and I just found out that there's a sick "limited" slipcase edition. Will be picking that up ASAP.
