Why are studios releasing some titles on BD outside the U.S.? - Blu-ray Forum

Can someone explain the logic to me of titles getting released and announced overseas for a title that has not here in the US? Is it marketing strategy or just good foreign policy?

I think it is based on distribution rights of the company.

The production and distribution companies are not always the same. For example:

Erin Brockovich

Production Company: Jersey Films
Distributor: Universal (U.S.A.), Columbia-TriStar/Sony (Other Countries)

Trainspotting was released by several companies in different countries.

Production Companies: Channel Four Films, Figment Films, Polygram Filmed Entertainment, The Noel Gay Motion Picture Company
Distributor: Miramax (U.S.A., Theaters)
Video/DVD: Buena Vista Home Video/Disney (DVD/VHS, U.S.A.), Columbia-TriStar Home Video/Sony: (Some Countries outside U.S.)

Because there is a great big world out there and the world does not revolve around the united states?
Also there are different licensing concerns in different areas.

Even us Brits want a US version, so we can pay less than half the price for it.

My USA catalog of movies is fast catching up with the UK versions.

Now don't flame the guy because he asks a very good question! We non-US people have to realize that we are used buying our movies from the US (LaserDiscs, DVDs...etc.) but up until now there wasn't a single reason for any US film fan to Import anything from another Country.

Things have changed and for some this is new territory.... we can try and help our fellow Film-lovers the best we can.

Maybe the same way as blade runner 5 disc ultimate ed is not released in europe or elsewhere but U.S ONLY!. So we who want this have to import this.

My thinking has always been, release the movie on home video in the country it originally came out in first, you feel jipped when it doesn't. That has happened all the time, especially with tv shows due to syndication deals and movies cause of pay-per-view deals, etc. Also I hate how others in the U.S. are prudes so movies with nudity are trimmed up and on boards you hear about those shots being left in on the UK edition. I want my movies quick and uncensored!

Japan is about 90% blu and about 10% HD DVD does there market not count. I hope not, we could use that 90% blu don't you think.
